What is it about DayZ

The constant and dynamic prisoner dilema of PvP encounters. Then its antithesis, dynamic social contracts made with other survivors. Then everything else. The only game to simulate real map/contour/compass navigation (that i know of), the isolation, exploration, elements of hunting animals, scaveging, zombies? DayZ is three sub games. PvP, survival/rpg elements and NPC encounters. You can choose which interaction you want but the dyamic nature of the game often throws any of these elments right at your face, testing your improvisation and the depth and breadth of you skills (navigation, stealth, sniping, etc).

The game is what you want it to be. Game? Wait a second. This is broken sketchy mod. Most of what i mentioned is barely functional or outright laughable in it's implementation. Yet that barely registers in my mind. It sucks you right into it's world. This mod that has produced the most intense firefights and PvP encounters out of any FPS I know of, having played FPS since Quake, DN3D, System Shock, CS1.0 through to CoDs/Stalker. I hope standalone crushes the experience i've had so far.

Zombies were never intended to be the main enemy, players on the other was. Sure zombies are very annoying mostly because of their pathing. But you are supposed to feel nervous all the time, because of the fact that you might as well get shot by a sniper hiding anywhere on the map waiting for you. For me that's enough to keep playing, not only as the guy getting shot but also as the guy shooting. I would personally hope that rocket and his team doesn't change the zombies to become to powerful, fix the pathing and make them run inside again and they would be more than fine.
