Item duping/hacking

Hello DayZ brothers.

I have a question regarding Item Duping and/or Hacking.

I'm what is considered a noob to ARMA2 and DayZ as I purchased the game simply to play the mod a few weeks ago now.

I like to think I familiarized myself with the game fairly well to the point where I can easily answer newcomers' questions by memory; However, I have no idea what should be or not be in the game regarding items or vehicles....

I have read in various places as well as have been told via chat and by other DayZ players that if you pick up a duped or hacked item/vehicle that should not be in the game you will be banned without question.

My question is... how am I supposed to know what is supposed and not supposed to be in the game? Even if I had a huge list of items that are "acceptable", it would be impossible to remember them all by heart and I cannot be alt+tabbing to check the list for confirmation every time I run across loot or a dead body.

This frightens me because I don't want to come across a dead player body or kill a player myself only to think I hit the jackpot after finding some awesome sniper rifle or equipment tool of some kind only to find it was hacked into the game somehow and I was banned without even knowing what I was doing.

If this is the way situations like these are handled, by just banning without question then I would say this is a serious problem to new players who have no idea such as myself.

Can anyone please touch on this subject?

As far as items go, you should go check out the wiki and take a brief look at what weapons are on there. The main ones you need to be careful around are stuff like M4's, and different models of AK47, though you should be fine. I've heard that hacked items won't have a picture.

Well... thanks for the information and all but this is the exact thing I mentioned would be a pain in the ass lol.

You can't expect a player to be in say, a very risky position standing over a dead body checking the loot and alt+tabbing to cross check the list of approved items to make sure everything is okay before you take it. Nobody does this, nobody will do this.

I guess I could print it out, but there has to be a better way....

As for what QbertTK said, if it's true that a hacked/duped item will not have a picture then that would solve it but can anyone actually confirm that?

Well I've heard some player saying that hacked items are missing icons, so if you see an item with a missing icon that way you can be sure its been hacked atleast.

It's not that I don't want to make the effort but thank you for your snide remark.

If I weren't trying to make an effort I would have saved my time and not created this thread.

You can't expect me to memorize all of these items....

My thread was fueled by a post in reddit that included an this image and a player asking if this was legit or not:

Many responses claimed that the weapon was hacked into the game thus he could and likely will be banned if he is using it.

If this weapon is hacked into the game then it appears it does have an icon and a display image even if they don't match it still has an image. This is very worrisome.

As you can see many players are disputing amongst themselves while others are offering to purchase and trade for the weapon itself.

It seems that nobody really knows or has a valid answer.

I can't seem to get a clear answer on this both on reddit and on the DayZ forums.

I sure wish someone with authority would chime in.

If you are afraid of possessing a weapon that's not legit, I (again) recommend checking the site I've given you.

If it's not legit, don't pick it up.

If it's legit pick it up if it's better than the one you have.

I seem redundant, ain't I? You're pretty fucking redundant too.

I don't know every weapon that's on this game but reading the list makes me know if there's something suspicious or not. You have to believe in yourself! You can make it! Read the list and try to remember it.

And btw, how is that Sticky worthy?

It's sticky worthy because nobody has a definitive answer and the consequences are extreme.

Also, the website you linked me is claimed to be official yet it cleared says UNOFFICIAL. I'd also like to mention that wiki pages can be edited by any user that wishes to do so. So adding in a weapon wouldn't be difficult for anyone to do.

I ask this question not for players that already have knowledge of this game but for those that do not.

It should be very clear by now that many players have recently purchased this game solely to play this mod with no prior knowledge of the game at all.

Furthermore, I would bet my life that a majority of the players that have purchased the game to play this mod do not read up on the game or do any prior research they just want to purchase, install, and get into the game to have fun. (I was one of these before I started doing a ton of research)

This can be confirmed by the thousands upon thousands of posts regarding the same topics of "Needing help with installation" when there are already detailed threads and videos on this. Also can be confirmed why global chat is constantly spammed with new players asking the most basic questions for fundamentals on the game.

My point is, having said all of that. I doubt that any new beginner with no gear other than what they started with and no knowledge of the game is going to pass-up the opportunity that you just did (Lopz).

Then with no knowledge of their own that they did anything wrong is automatically banned thus feeling completely confused and robbed of their experience for what they paid for...

Why would you think it weird for someone to have 10 magazines?

I have 8 magazines right now of my AKM and could easily bump that to 10 within the hour if I wanted to? That really doesn't make any sense.

This issue also goes across items and vehicles as well not just weapons. So a player should have what, cross reference multiple lists while they sit there like a sitting duck?

I would also like to add that after looking at the said official yet unofficial weapons list link posted, if you read the actual discussion part on that page you can find this:

I've been killed in similar situations with high tech gear including a DMR, tent, 8 magz, M9SD with 6 magz, gsp, map, watch, compass, ghillie suite, 5 pieces of cooked meat, blood bags etc..

Went afk to alt+tab and check the online map with loot spawn locations while prone in the middle of the woods nearby a tree and under a bush.

I thought I was safe and I was proven to be wrong, you're never safe in this game especially while alt+tabbed so your point doesn't really mean much other than he went afk or alt+tabbed in the wrong place or he could have even been lagging out....

Alright folks I'm a little freaked out right now because I killed a player in the NE Airfield this morning and I happened to come across an M16A2 M203. I cross referenced the list of weapons off the wiki and it showed the weapon listed so I took it thinking it should be fine.

I then decided I would go into the Single Player editor to get some practice with using and firing the weapon so I'm not a totally noob with it. Well unless I made a mistake the weapon I picked up is labeled as M16A2GL for the command I insert into the editor to spawn with it. I could be wrong, this is my first time ever using the editor and I have a total of maybe 5min experience with using it.

Anyway, I typed in to spawn with the M16A2GL into the SPeditor and the weapon does not look the same at all. It's tan/brown in color for one and it had a scope. The one I found in game and have in the game is black and has no scope as seen in the wiki. I could have picked the wrong item to enter in the SPeditor but that's beyond the point....

I'm just really confused. Can anyone tell me if I have picked up a legitimate weapon or not? I don't want to get in trouble and if I need to drop it, then I will do so immediately.

I've had every tent that I set up spawn more tents in my inventory. Nothing game breaking but I'll set up a tent, place the duped tent inside the set up tent and come back to 20-25 tents inside the tent.

It doesn't seem to happen with any other items.

So not true... I found a thermal scoped AS50 on a dead body. It had a picture and everything. Found out it was hacked and dropped the gun at the bottom of a lake to avoid catching a ban.

First of all, M16A2 M203 is a legit weapon. The M16A2GL has a different underslung grenade launcher attachment and is completely different from the M203.

Second, they don't autoban you on public servers for picking up a hacked weapon anymore. On most private servers, they can outright prevent hacked guns completely (on good private servers anyway), or auto delete them as soon as they are picked up, so there is no danger there.

Third, the weapon list on DayZWiki is 100% accurate, so compare the name of the gun to the guns on that list.

Fourth, and this is important... There is NO WAY to tell outright if a weapon is legit unless you memorize the list of the legit weapons (unless the weapon actually does have a missing or wrong icon). Unless you alt-tab to check the list, you can't tell just from the gun's description.

So in summary, if you see something questionable, you can pick it up and then check it later at your leisure.
