Dogs should return home.

Recommended Posts

I would like to be able to set a HOME for the dog that I spend time training up, I would like to be able to tell my dog to piss of home and protect my tent/base at which point it would run the map get home and then sit on guard or I might want to tell it to go home and hide at which point it would go home and then hide in some tree or bush.

I would also like that if my current player dies, that my dog should automatically go home and hide, I should then be able to return to my base and retrieve my dog.

Just in the same way I can get my body back when I die, I want to salvage my dog if I die rather than having to go out and train a whole new dog all over again, people will get attached to their dogs and the dog itself will become something to protect I suspect.

only Dog Death should remove a dog from a player.

OR.. what about telling your dog to guard you, and if you die the dog would then protect your body, would hide in a bush and as soon as some one goes to loot and opens your corpse it would attack the player..

which is something a real dog would probably do their so loyal.

have you ever actually tried to salvage a dog? it's messy, difficult work. you're going to need a fairly well-equipped evil laboratory as well as a lot of time.

interesting idea, but highly impractical.

Noticed you have been posting often about your ideas. I like this one though, the ability to have your dog guard your body. Or you can set a tent as the dogs home for him to go to. Interesting idea though.

Interesting idea. Would love to roam around with a dog. However the animal AI would need to be improved to avoid players trailing the dog to the camp.

Not necessarily ..... you could make the dogs run a lot faster than humans, and give it a random path back to the tent, but following a lone dog succsesfully would be a good reward for another survivor...

I think these dogs will cause more problems than they are usefull anyway... I can just imagine when you are trying to sneak a town etc and the dog cant wait and agroes all zerds, and its AI sucks so it will block and hastle around and pfff

But when they will add those bastards I think it would be nice to tell them go camp or set location.. Well I wont be having one anyway.

Nice idea. Dogs seem pretty useless as they have been described so far - find a zombie, find a player, find a goat or whatever they do.

The problem with guard dogs, well with all dogs, is that they are just going to be butchered for the LOLZ. No dog is a match for a bullet or an axe.

You are going to return to your tent and find your dog gutted for his meat and your tent ravaged like a drunken nightclub slut.

Actually, train a dog well enough, and you'll have your throat ripped out before you can even say "hatchet". Dogs have been bred and used in wars, since the earliest days of man. Having a dog could benefit you in a lot of ways, especially if it's at peak performance. I honestly think a dog would be harder to kill then an enemy player, as it's faster, and more lethal. But we'll just see how and what ways it's going to be used in DayZ.

Would the dog log in/out with the character (not death) or always be on that one server/map?

In real life if a dog attacks, it runs in a straight line at you, it's not going to zig-zag - Dog vs Enfield, Dog vs Shotgun - I can't see Fido winning a dog vs weapon competition. And God knows what a Dean "Rocket" Hall dog will be like, it will probably run backwards and say 'miaow'.

Maybe the dog moments from STALKER SoC + Super mod pack/OL2.2 could be used as inspiration. I know this isn't Stalker and comparisons are taboo.

Police dogs run right at a perp but you could easily train a real dog to zig zag so thats not an issue, however if you have seen the video of them using the dogs you will or should remember most of the time the guy could not see the damn thing the grass was taller than the dog and it was only visible right at the last second.

So dog vs gun might not be as straight forward as you think, depending on where you are, if your in the middle of an air field, or road you have a shot at stopping it, but if your in a bush in the middle of a forest or grassy field I think the dogs ona rip your face off.

As for the dogs power, Police dogs in the US have been trained to take down armed men, and thats in real life so their clearly equipped for the job or the police force would not use them, saw an episode of cops once where a dog unit took a guy with a shotgun out the shotgun guy had no chance as the dog got hold of his arm and nearly tore it off.

Dog's in real life are leathal, so much so that the law states a dog trained to attack a human is considered a leathal weapon. so if he puts them in and their not leathal killing machines then I will be rather unhappy.

Just to clarify you on this, When you die that character dies, when you respawn you are a completely new character, so in this case you would not be the same person thus your dog would not remember you.

Yeh, this is what I was thinking...

To add to this though, is that like the OP said, the dog sits and guards your body, and to be friends with it again, you go back to it and feed it before you go to the body. Would also be nice if the dog kept it's level of intelligence. Like if a new player finds a dog thats already been trained, the dog would act and behave how players want without the training.

Oh the realism argument, so being able to put two or three car engines wheels and a helicopter main rottor assembly in your bag and pockets does not bother you at all ? or the fact that morphene fixes broken bones ? or how about the fact that there are zombies, or the fact that you can hit some one with an axe ten times before they fall over if you dont hit them in the head, OH I know how about the fact that in real life you can last weeks without food but in this its hours.

Your Realism Argument is shot out of the water simply looking at the rest of the game, ITS A GAME!, that being said and if you really want something to role play with, you could be the dead guys brother from a really large family of infinate brothers, and the dog detects the family smell so does not rip off your face.

GOD why do some people have to be so anal.

Your dog is gonna be meat before it's even close enough to be a threat. Everything reset when you die so technically you will be dog less. Death in this game is the ultimate failure where you get kicked back to the beach like a day one newbie.

you have a point there: some stuff in DayZ is not realistic at all. but there is no possible way (for a pc game) to achieve playability AND total realism both. when you make items spawn only once, there is nothing left for all the players. if you make ammo scarce the players have nothing to shoot with. and so on and so on. you have to keep your customer happy to a point where you have fun playing while keeping the realism as high as possible.

as for the post you responded to: he has a point aswell. your sessions in DayZ represent your characters story of survival. when you die, you are dead. you can create a new character which looks the same but which isn't the same. therefore - in my opinion - you should'nt be able to get you body, get your tents and get your dog as well. that takes all the fun from building a new character from scratch as hard as it is loosing all that good stuff (happened to me as well).

personally, I would like to see disappearing bodys after a set of time. and dogs who attack their "previous" but totally new owner if they want to get to their old camp. you still would have the advantage of knowing that there is a killer dog hiding in the bushes which other players would have not.

Exactly this. I can't wait to eat me someones dog. I'll leave a fireplace and it's butchered body there for good measure. I've actually killed and eaten a dog in DayZ already. It was a Golden Retriever type (presumably hacked in). Think it only had one steak on it.
