Remove more UI icons

Recommended Posts

Since the latest patch I have enjoyed playing without the debug monitor. But I would really like it if the eye/ear icons were removed. I dont really think these icons are needed as I know if I am stand up running I am creating noise/easy to spot and if I am prone moving slowly I am quiet/hard to spot. The hunger icon could be replaced with a stomach rumbling noise instead of icon and temperature replaced with shaking from the cold and the already implemented cough sound. Can't think of a good one for thirst yet maybe someone else has a better idea than mine.

Are these icons really necessary with rockets idea of minimal UI. Just a thought, sorry if I am repeating a post but I could not find one in my search.

You can remove the ear and eye icons and the sacrifice of also losing blood, temp, food and water.

^^If you change the UI to debug monitor, your needs icons stay green, so you can't tell when you get hungry/thirsty and risk losing blood. Don't know what happens if you select the remove all UI icons option.

I think it's difficult to determine whether removing all the UI autocmatically makes the game more believable and authentic. If you have to rely on stomach growling/shaking hands, the needs system becomes binary instead of gradually. I wouldn't mind seeing ammo counters removed, when the ammunition system is reworked, but cutting eys/ears/needs icons just for the sake of cutting them seems like a bad idea.

But I'm afraid all these different needs sounds will become really repeatative and annoying.

What do you mean?

You can turn off everything by hitting esc-game options-DayZ UI-None. This will get rid of all the icons but you won't know when you're hungry, cold or thirsty.

I think the hunger, temperature, and thirst icons at least need to stay in. Sight and sound you don't really need, but it helps for the newer player. Blood, I'm not sure about..

The reason for this is that the game can only simulate real life so much. In real life, you know when you are cold and hungry, because you can feel it. In game, you can't and you have to rely on UI icons for it. I might not notice the sound of my stomach growling. Sometimes I have to play on a lower volume and I might not hear it. And if I'm sneaking around, I don't think it would be hard to mistake the sound for a zombie.

For blood, I think there is an effective measure of how much blood you have just by the screen color, so I don't think it's necessary to have the icon, although it is helpful when I'm bleeding because for some reason I often don't see blood spurting out of me when the icon says I'm bleeding. I'm not sure why, probably a glitch but it is annoying.

However, in removing these icons you are also upping the learning curve of the game, which is already insanely high to begin with. Removing these icons will give the player very little information and when a new player starts dying of hunger or has a cold, they likely won't know what's happening.
