So I know hand to hand combat and melee type weapons have been mentioned about a million times but...

So like many fresh spawns the first thing I try to do in DayZ is get myself a hatchet. Then I feel very slightly bosslike. If you could punch, kick and maybe headbutt(ok yes I'm Scottish..so what?) then that would straight away give you a slight advantage over zeds and could make for some hilarious PvP battles. To borrow a few ideas from that Zombie game where you build the crazy weapons (Dead Rising?) you should be able to use many things as weapons (either swung or thrown) such as sticks, bricks, metal bars etc. Also the jumping kick is quite effective and would be perfect for dealing with a zed that has basically trapped you in a small building by standing in the door while you are unarmed. Another idea that could be borrowed from this game or similar games is some basic climbing/jumping/vaulting which is pretty much missing from the current Arma 2 engine. don't get me wrong I don't want DayZ to end up a bastardised console game but feel it needs a little more fluidity to movement.

A few comments...

Ability to punch - I don't like the inclusion of it. Going into unarmed combat against a zed never ends well for humans (Source: every zombie movie ever) and using it against other players... They would have to be unarmed too and this would serve no purpose... They obviously are new spawns with nothing of value and would just encourage, in your words, sillyness in an otherwise grim game.

MAYBE a shove option (I think L4D has this) where it deals no damage but zeds can be shoved away, allowing the player an opportunity to escape.

More improvised weapons - Agreed, things like knives, baseball bats, golf clubs, etc should all be available to use as melee weapons. I also think this is an obvious flaw with the current game that the Devs are well aware of and intend to fix. In the mean time, in case you were unaware, all those tin cans that you pass up... they CAN BE USED TO KILL ZEDS. That's right. They are damage dealing projectile weapons.

Jumping - If jumping is included, it will have to be a VERY LIMITED use. No bunny hopping, no jumping and shooting, none of it. It should have a very limited use. The only thing I can think of that isn't currently covered by vaulting is rooftop to rooftop...

That said, vaulting should be expanded to move up onto low ledges and things like that, versus the one manuever that exists currently.

Punching wouldn't be bad, as long as it does the same damage zombie punches do (which is not really all that much).

Someone mentioned the obvious but no one else has since then. Buttstroking/pistol-whipping. You can kill someone with a well-aimed pistol-whip and butt-stroking was, at least at one point, taught in the Army combat manual. If I'm carrying a gun, I should be able to crack a skull with it.

Considering he's probably dripping with infection I'd rather smack him round the head with a cosh than touch him at all.

If it were easy to do, there would certainly be no reason to fear the zeds at all. It's bad enough that they pose almost no threat once weapons are aquired, if I could give them

Adding a melee option to all weapons (riflebutt, pistol whip, etc) would be a great idea. It would allow you to not carry a formal melee weapon, or at least have to switch to it, when you need to take down a zed quietly... or without using ammo... or when you feel like giving it a personal touch...

Do you know how easily you break/fracture your hand IRL? Punching could be a good idea, but i think it could have some consequences, like broken and fractured hands/knuckles/wrists.

I think that'd be the most beneficial to be honest, if they haven't already thought about including it, i'd love this.
