Google Earth maps?

Recommended Posts

I'd love to see the standalone start players off in their actual RL location, and I thought maybe google earth sort of thing could implement it. The experience of having to travel to meet up with friends and other survivors, and the advantages beginning in somewhat familiar territory would make everything seem that much more realistic. I imagine myself trekking down Hwy 400 into Toronto to search for loot and survivors, maybe making my way from there across the border into America, trying to head for warmer climes.

You obviously have no idea how long it takes to map. It would be amazingly cool, yes, but it would probably take literally a century to do. Not to mention mapping CONSTANT daily changes to the world...

This ^ It would be the coolest thing ever done in a video game but with the technology we have today, it's just not possible.

I realize it's not possible to have that kind of detail, and while no, I have no knowledge of mapping, I didn't expect it was easy.

I just thought it would be cool.

Suddenly I'd be guaranteed a long walk to meet up with friends (who live in Europe) every single time either of us died... the line for realism has to be drawn someplace.

I've brought this up to people before, but not here.

Many years from now, Google Earth will likely allow people to render their home towns.

I think they should get the ball rolling now. And inspire people everywhere to render our planet.

One way to inspire it would be to actually announce a AAA free-roam game that would use A future version of google earth, and the announcement could encourage people to render their towns and surrounding areas.

Even if technology got to that level, and eventually, it will, how would you handle the insides of buildings? I just don't see it happening in the near future. Maybe when I'm an old man or something, but not anytime soon. Too much hand work would have to be done.

P.S. OP I just realized your name goes with your home town. That's clever, I like that.

Actually Virtual Battlespace (The military sim arma is based on) has a lot of real world maps with it, in fact it takes about several DVD's for the whole set. Well I can't find them now, but there used to be some DVD's on their site with a load of maps in.

Right, so people who want to rob me don't need to stake out my place in real life, they just have to go onto google earth? Great idea.

I can see you're all big fans of good old big brother.

@james

Houses could easily be inaccessible. If the people are designing the world, they could choose whether or not to advertise the layout of the house to the world. Nor does a house have to have anything in it valuable or advertising a persons name.

You could design the world without letting people in your house, or letting people see what real furniture you have in there, it could be entirely your choice how you model a house. And if the house isn't yours, I'm sure someone could program a randomizer

Okay, so then imagine what it would take for the entire inhabited planet...

Nah they all look the same. Anyway, how would you tell if he was friendly?

Possibly one of the dumbest ideas ever. DayZ Standalone will not be a map of Earth, it is Chernarus. Also, do you know how long it would take to meet up with friends, I'm not going to walk 10 days to get to my friend who lives half way across the country. Also, how would making a detailed amp with building and shit of earth be possible?

I was rather hoping it would be set in the world. I leave aside the fact that Toronto isn't in America. Good Day, Eh?

I was thinking more along the lines of city/town locations, topographical features. Accurate street layouts would be nifty, but not necessary. As for getting to your friend more quickly, there are better ways to travel than walking, right?

I really dig the layers of realism in DayZ. I thought this idea, while not bloody likely to happen, would be an amplifier for that realism, and be pretty sweet, to boot. I'm sorry if you disagree with that.

Many, many years off.

Cool but If were not playin in our home towns on Day Z ...4, then we'll be reminiscing on how it inspired whatever does take on that challenge. I think this thread is preparing us all for a nice bit of nostalgia XD

I don't anticipate seeing this is DayZ anytime soon but I think people are overestimating how difficult it actually is. Just look at how many 3D buildings are already in Google Earth. I live in a midsize American city (~500 km2) and Google Earth contains hundreds of times more buildings for it than there are in Chernarus. Almost all of those buildings are automatically generated and textured. They certainly aren't perfect and there are no interiors but if you wanted a plausible, not 100% accurate, game a lot of the details could be fudged and filled in programmaticlly.

I work in related fields and the technology to do this sort of thing is getting better and cheaper at an amazing rate. An individual or company with a few thousand dollars to spend can do things that were only dreamed of by countries just a few decades ago. The entire earth is huge (510,072,000 km2), and mostly covered by water, but building "real" maps on a much larger scale than a couple hundred square kilometers is certainly doable. In many ways, cities are the most challenging but with the right tools very large rural maps could be created with relatively little effort.
