No, impossible to enforce and I don't really want to hear background noises of anyone I am with.

I choose no, if we all lived in a vacuum, maybe.

But if my wife, kid or doorbell gave me away that would not be the "realism" you're after.

As has already been explained, most headsets/mics have a "mute" button allowing easy defeat of such. If not, a quick keyboard macro would accomplish it. You can't "force" it on as a result.

Secondly, I would probably die much more often from laughter of hearing these survivors/bandits spew audio like dogs barking, moms saying "Jimmy, got off the computer and do your homework!" and other such hilarity.

So, no.
