Snoa 0 Posted June 10, 2012 Hiya guys, I got this game recently and am having trouble getting off to a good start. I've read guides and watched videos but nothing seems to help. Whenever I spawn, I go inland and try to follow some roads. But these always lead me to a chain of small cities where all I can get is ammo for my makarov, watches, and food and drinks occasionally. But I always end up running out of ammo and dying. I've heard you can find your starting location when you spawn, but I've never seen that. If I did see it then I would totally look up a map and find a good, near by city. But yeah, it seems I can't find any city except for the smaller ones that usually only have one accessible building IF that, and I can't find any guns either. Help and tips would be appreciated (And yes I've read the guides, I'm just a little slow I guess ;-; )

Snoa 0 Posted June 10, 2012 Thanks! But how do I know where I spawn? When/where do those numbers pop up with my coordinates?
Praetorian (DayZ) 2 Posted June 10, 2012 Whenever you load into the game on the bottom right corner will tell you a name of a city or area you are close to as well as how many days you have been able to survive.
blyndside 0 Posted June 10, 2012 Why peeps giving out crappy maps.www.Dayzmap.infoSimplezGives you the location of each lootable house, churches, factorys etc and what can be gained from it.Also when you log in/spawn on the lower right hand side of the screen it will tell you where you have spawned, or at least where you have spawned close too. Bomfy 0 Posted June 10, 2012 Firstly, don't try and shoot things. When in doubt of your ability to get through a location with zombies, crawl. You have to headbutt them in the shin to get their attention when crawling. You location will pop up in the lower right corner when you log in. The middle is what matters, it's what town/thing you are near. Wilderness means you are far away from locations. No coords, just place name. Remember you could spawn south or north of say Kamenka (for example) so you have to take that into account when looking at a map.Small villages without a building you enter can still be great. Look in entrances fo buildings with an overhang, some small storage out buildings can have loot by them. And my favorite, outhouses can be opened for sometimes amazing hauls. If you shut the door on yourself you could break your leg and they can be a total bitch to actually get the loot from, but HIGHLY worth it in my opinion. Snoa 0 Posted June 10, 2012 Alright. So based off of this info, what I should do the second I spawn is jot down what city I'm near, find some good cover, and go prone while I look at an online map to see how to get to said city? Also, you always spawn on the south beach right? So away from the beach is always north?
moleculor 0 Posted June 10, 2012 You sometimes spawn on the east coast, I believe, but mostly south. And yes, basically, remember the name of the town, and then use an online map to figure out where you are.Eventually you'll know the area as well as any native (vaguely) and won't need to look at the map until you find one. Snoa 0 Posted June 10, 2012 Alright that sounds good. My main problem is not knowing what city I am, what cities are nearby, and having a destination. I have a feeling that once I head to a reasonably-sized city and get a map and actually know where I am, I'll have it from there.

The larger places need to be an in and out affair. It might take 2-3 or 10 times to get a good lay of the land, but it's better then realizing you got popped in the head whilst looking at your map. PieceOfDust 11 Posted June 10, 2012 Learn to use the Cyrillic Alphabet. It makes a lot more sense (phonetically) than how we use the Roman Alphabet. Each letter in a word makes a sound, and you simply string them together.Even if you don't want to spend time doing that, you can look for some of the letters in certain words that are similar to their English counterparts. Some examples:Черногорск = ChernogorskЗлектрозаводск = ElektrozavodskСтарый Собор = Stary SoborБалота = Balota(even though I can read it, I take forever to type it)Edit: this is so you can read road signs and the signs at train stations, by the way.
