Bambo (DayZ) 42 Posted August 24, 2012 (edited) Please read the whole thread before commenting/passing judgement.I was thinking of ways to possibly better the game for the general community the other day, and I came up with this:New Item: LaptopFunctions: Connects to a satellite which generates a relatively close up snapshot of a provided area (user chooses a 10 square kilometer zone for the photo (number not set in stone)) every 5-10 minutes (this number is also not set in stone). In the photo, the user would be able to zoom in quite a bit in order see the position players and zombies were in when the photo was taken. Players or zombies that were inside or underneath cover when the photo was taken would not be seen.Stats: Only spawns in military areas (this is not set in stone). Has a very, very low spawn rate/chance.Restrictions: The photo produced by the satellite would not be heat sensitive. The photo produced would not designate certain objects as "players" or "zombies". Only close and thorough analysis of the photo would be able to reveal the identity of individual objects.Note: I have not yet thought of a way to deal with player-owned vehicles and tents. Should the photo reveal these as well? Or should these be hidden from the gaze of satellite in order to protect player item ownership and sort of "nerf" the power of the "Laptop"? I'm not really sure. This is up for debate. As you can see, the primary function of this device would be to locate targets that have remained stationary for extensive periods of time (campers/snipers). So just tell me what you think, fellas. Thanks,Scoopolard Edited August 24, 2012 by scoopolard
Giela 4 Posted August 24, 2012 hmmm I like it maybe if you can fit vehicles with a part that they are not vissible for satelites?!?
LawsOfFire 21 Posted August 24, 2012 well you cant see a Ural if it is hidden in the forests. not even in a helicopter flying just above (i always have trouble being the pilot in my team and never can find the camp)
Capercaillie 16 Posted August 24, 2012 To me this seems to be too much out of the concept. This would be too "high-tec" imo, I'd say the gps (and the possible radio systems still to be implemented) are enough for items that have buttons.
Bambo (DayZ) 42 Posted August 24, 2012 hmmm I like it maybe if you can fit vehicles with a part that they are not vissible for satelites?!?Yeah that was what I was thinking. Same for tents. It would just give the owners of a computer too much of an advantage.well you cant see a Ural if it is hidden in the forests. not even in a helicopter flying just above (i always have trouble being the pilot in my team and never can find the camp)Hmm...I've ever actually had the chance to acquire a helicopter...I'll have to look more into that.To me this seems to be too much out of the concept. This would be too "high-tec" imo, I'd say the gps (and the possible radio systems still to be implemented) are enough for items that have buttons.I can understand that opinion, but this isn't any more high-tec than an operational GPS. A GPS device locks onto a satellite and uses its programming to locate its own coordinates. It then distributes the coordinates to the user. The laptop would essentially be doing the same thing, but instead of locking onto the user's coordinates, it would take a customized snapshot of a provided location in a limited time interval. It's essentially a more "live" version of Google Earth. My goal with this is to essentially counter all of the assholes who like to just chill on the hills and rooftops outside of the big cities like Elektro and snipe anyone they see. Capercaillie 16 Posted August 24, 2012 (edited) Yes, I understood how it would work but you have to understand: Using a handheld GPS device is completely different than using some military laptop to connect to a satellite and using the satellite camera to take photos (ie. controlling the satellite).I can understand that opinion, but this isn't any more high-tec than an operational GPS. A GPS device locks onto a satellite and uses its programming to locate its own coordinates. It then distributes the coordinates to the user. The laptop would essentially be doing the same thing, but instead of locking onto the user's coordinates, it would take a customized snapshot of a provided location in a limited time interval. It is high-tec compared to an operational GPS.Think about it this wayWhen using a GPS, what does the GPS do and what does the satellite do?GPS-connects to satellite-receives coordinates-draws the current location on a pre-installed map based on received coordinatesSatellite-sends coordinates. When using this military laptop thing you suggested:Laptop-same stuff as gps and showing a picture-receive data from satelliteSatellite-send coordinates-move around, turn the camera around to correct location, zoom in, take photo-send photoIf you see where I'm going at, every man can buy his own gps device and use it as if it was a mobile phone, TV or what ever modern day electronic device. But not every man can afford/can get his hands on a device that physically controls the satellites floating in the sky. Even if they'd somehow get their hands on a device like this, they most likely wouldn't know how to operate it.Using GPS =/= using satelliteIt's like comparing driving a car to flying a helicopter. My goal with this is to essentially counter all of the assholes who like to just chill on the hills and rooftops outside of the big cities like Elektro and snipe anyone they see.Well if this is your point, then wouldn't you just do these guys a favor as if the laptop would be so rare, only people with endgame gear would get their hands on it?Let them play the game how they like, bringing in this satellite system would probably only be trouble. It's not really too hard to avoid a try-hard bandit and his brand new DMR.. Abi (DayZ) 68 Posted August 24, 2012 Would be unrealistic if the Laptops was rare items. Nearly every house today have at least 1..
