Stand alone game on new engine so...

Recommended Posts

What exactly are we testing now? If Dayz is gonna be released as a stand alone on a new engine, what can be gained with continued testing on this engine? Any bug, glitch or new idea may be completely different on the new engine, so forgive my ignorance but further testing on the current engine seems pointless.

It's going to be a combination of this engine and the next iteration, we are still testing the general premise of the mod/game, and how new features work in gameplay rather then code.

A combination of both engines? Can you please elaborate? How does that work? If the developers of Dayz think I am gonna give them money for a game that uses an old engine ( that seems full of bugs!!) they are sorely mistaken.

This will likely by used to test new mechanics and features. Dogs, variations on the item spawns (ie devoid of anything everywhere) etc.

Bugtesting will have to be done on the standalone version

From what Rocket has said they are going to be using a combination of the current arma 2 engine and the new one for arma 3 for the standalone, taking what works from the old and using new features from the new. If you get a chance check out the reddit AMA thread, has some pretty informative information on the direction they are headed.

The last I have checked, the only thing that has been said about the stand alone, is that there will be a stand alone. We don't know what engine, or when they plan to release anything. We don't know they are going to use the new Arma 3 engine. I would not be surprised if they use a pimped out version of the arma 2 engine, so they have plenty of time to work with the arma 3 engine if they get an ok to make a second dayz.

I have? So the Arma 2 engine was old when it first came out in 2009?

Real Virtuality 4 isn't going to be rewritten from scratch, just like RV 3 wasn't either. So, no, the new engine doesn't render everything that has been done so far useless. The standalone game will use it's own branch of the RV engine, that's what people mean by a combination of both engines.

It will use a branched version of the Real Virtuality engine, let's call it the DayZ engine since it will have significant differences to ArmA 2 and ArmA 3's engine even though they both use the same engine as a base.

The DayZ engine will take what works best for DayZ, some of those features will be from ArmA 2, some from ArmA 3 and some built entirely from scratch, some examples Rocket has given are taking the much improved lighting from ArmA 3 while using the simple ragdoll physics from ArmA 2 as it fits DayZ's multiplayer PvP style much better than ArmA 3's complex ragdoll

it's not an entirely new engine and as such will share a lot of similarities with it's predecessor, I believe it was actually fairly trivial to port the existing mod across to the new engine, hence the short time frame until a standalone version is released, while some things are being entirely rewritten, a lot of the existing stuff can be used too.

Even if some things can't be ported directly, the mod is still going to be a great tool to try out and experiment with new ideas, if feedback is positive they can implement them in standalone, if it's terrible or breaks a core mechanic etc and lots of people stop playing the mod, it's not such a huge deal, you just can't do that with standalone when people are paying for the game, there is a different level of expectation.

This is a social experiment. This is about testing ourselves. In other words, does the game work with bandit skins, humanity, dogs, meta-gaming. etc or do those elements result in a game that nobody wants to play anymore?

It's different. It allows for possibilities not found in other games, such as huge maps and realistic skies (even phase of the moon). But if you make a features checklist, it will be missing features that other engines take for granted.

Of course it won't be a new engine, but it will be a different from the ArmA II engine, at least to my knowledge.

Considering Call of Duty players are still buying a game running on an ancient engine I am pretty sure they know people will buy the game. Rocket has described then engine as VR 2.5, so it sounds like the Arma 2 engine with some adjustments (I forget the name of the game the engine is being taken from, too lazy to look it up). It is the concept and gameplay that make this game interesting, anything else is just icing on the cake for me.

From the RPS interview:

Hall: It’s more like Arma 2.5, and there’s a very important reason for that. Arma 2 has reached a certain level of maturity, and that’s important for Day Z. We want to do things like support a simple ragdoll, rather than the complex ragdoll that Arma 3 has, because we’re multiplayer and PvP focused. So yeah it’s more like Arma 2.5, but because we’ve got the guys who created the engine working directly on this game, we could soon see Day Z codebase looking very different. It’s actually based more on the Take On Helicopters architecture than what we’ve done with Arma 3

Hackers are also part of the experiment, just wish it was a part that added more value.
