Backpack disappeared after entering a lake

Recommended Posts

Date/Time: 24/04/12 ~14:00 GMT+2

What happened: Had a backpack + M4A3 in hand, entered a lake to refill my bottle, started to swim and all my stuff besides sidearm and couple of armmo disappeared.

Where you were: I was somewhere NW of the NW airport, will update later with exact location

What you were doing: Like I said, started to swim and stuff disappeared.

Should always drop your stuff on the side of the lake or wherever you're going to be swimming, ArmA has always given you a strong chance of dropping stuff while swimming.

The issue with this is if you drop all your things on the ground you risk losing it if the server goes down, or if it just bugs out and disappears, which has been known to happen.

It would seem less potentially frustrating if this was changed so that swimming never has any chance of you dropping items.

Yes, sure, but let's put this into perspective:

Can of food: ~1kg

Can of soda: 0.5kg

M4: 2.9kg

One magazine of 5.56: 0.2kg

So, with an M4, 5 magazines, 2 cans of food, and a can of pepsi (or coke, whichever you prefer), you would already carry ~6.5kg around. In addition to your clothing, and not counting your backpack. I dare you to go to a pool and jump in in full clothing and with a backpack filled with stones. You WILL drop that backpack in order to not drown, trust me.

Ok, I've gone swimming multiple times with all my kit and never dropped anything. I've had friends who did and lost all their stuff.

My point is, that something that has no rhyme or reason but arbitrarily drops all your items at the bottom of the sea is going to lead to frustration. It should be one or the other, if at all possible.

I lost all my kit falling of a rock into knee deep water, I was not swimming and I do not have an issue with the lost goodies as I recovered from that. But it doesn't seem like something that is based on chance really, I believe there is another underlying issue that remains unknown as of yet. As mentioned sometimes you can easily swim fully geared and others you wade into the water and poof.

I script for my clans servers, and my admiration runs deep for you devs. Kudos.

If I may be so bold, in this scenario, I would simply note the few water sources that players can fill from, and just make it a distance variable check rather than a check that forces the player to tred water.

I can't imagine that would be such a difficult task, as stated this is an Arma issue - and as gathering gear and items is so very time consuming, and a core part of the game, I think this should be taken into consideration.

I'm not one to cry "fix it!" and sit on my duff while others work; I'd be happy to work this out myself and contribute so long as I wasn't pissing in your guys' pond, so to speak. ;)

Not sure if this would be the place to suggest a fix after fix for things, but this particular bug hits me and I think I can understand why the ponds can't be easily filled like the ocean. I (just taking a shot in the dark) would assume the script is set for when a player is less than a certain altitude (slightly below sea level) they get the option to fill. Ponds being above that need them to be in a swimming animation...

Given the fairly limited number of ponds in the map, could a 55-gallon drum or well be placed by each pond on the map, and players can just go to that to fill their canteens? This would prevent people from risking losing all their items every time they need a fill up.

Not like you would really need to go for a swim just to fill a canteen in a pond, irl...

Just a thought :)

It seems very random. I was spawned in the ocean on one strange server restart with several other people about 10 minutes away from land. I made a swim for it and did not lose my gear until a good 5 minutes of swimming.

Just recently I stumbled into swamp water that I thought was only knee deep and as SOON as I began swimming my gear instantly disappeared. I think it is just random.

It's worth noting that it isn't necessary to swim to refill your water. I've found wading into knee- or waist-deep water and looking at the water (kneeling helps) will allow you to refill your canteen.

I have never once had to swim to refill my canteen. Not once. I don't know how this happened, but I guess memetic propagation had people being constantly told they had to swim and assuming from that that it was the only way, and passing it along themselves.

It's senseless for people to risk their stuff with Arma2's swimming mechanic trying to refill their canteens when this isn't even necessary.

I've never been able to fill without swimming Mojo, I even checked the code and it appears that it checks specifically if you are swimming (the swimming animation). I might be wrong on this tho.

Another problem with the scripting command "surfaceIsWater" is that it appears to not work in ponds, but it will work in the docks ner cherno/elektro. So it can't be used the way it works now.
