"Soft" nametags

Recommended Posts

Give players a key binding that will identify a player they're already looking at. This is a compromise between not being able to know players' names at all, in Veteran, and having a magical player-spotting device, in Regular.

I think it's important to be able to identify players for the sake of knowing friends vs. enemies, getting revenge, etc.

Issues brainstormed so far:

1. Abuse by just holding they key down and scanning to spot players? Fix with 5-second delay between command sends.

Customizable clothing would really help solve this.

Not really. What you're talking about is hundreds of thousands of varieties of the exact same forest camouflage. Every sensible player's priority is not to look unique, it's to look invisible. Custom face skins almost work, except for the same camo problem and that faces aren't very easy to pick out from a distance.

In theory, yes. In reality, no.

Reason: people can just hold down the key while looking around, thus making it so they can see anyones name-tag that they come across; meaning that it would be the same as just playing regular.

Not that I like the idea of nametags in general since this is not realistic and HUD elements are retarded for a sim game, but something recognizable like a group system where group members have arm bands that only the group members can see or something of that nature to make it easier to distinguish between friend and foe.

If it's realism you want, then faces and body shapes should be 100% customizeable so that people's identities are as readily perceptible as in real life. That's not the case and won't be, so we need a substitute for our perception, and that's nametags.

I'm mostly concerned about being able to identify a unique enemy, e.g. that asshole who put a bullet in the back of your head after you gave him a blood transfustion. Hunting somebody down and getting revenge is a very sweet part of this game, but it's not possible when you can't tell who's who.

P.S. Your reply to Gex made me choke on a carrot. Thank you.

I was thinking the same thing, Joker. That or a simple "tag player" option in the scroll menu when you are close enough to a player. When the player is tagged the identification system should kick in as usual but only for that player and within a very strict distance. If used properly it can be a way of showing your allegiance to someone; letting someone tag you means they trust you. Breaking that trust by shooting a tagged player could have it's own effects on your humanity.

Maybe have a button in which you sort of "store their face to memory."

From now on if you are close enough to see their face (this would be a hard number " at X distance") or if you can zoom into a players face with binocs or a scope at X distance, you would recognize them as you would in real life and a soft tag or small prompt will arrive with the players name. However this nametag would not stay on your screen, only a prompt letting you know it's a player you've encountered.

However I disagree you should be able to hunt an enemy down that killed you, sorry. This would technically be a new life and you shouldn't be able to carry over previous face recognitions.

This guy is absoloutley right. we need this. for your squad members.. maybe in a fashion where u send a nametag kind of request and they have to accept it to allow yourself to aqcuire that players tag but only for a 10 meter distance or something ?
