Why is a high ping so BAD?

Recommended Posts

I am in the US trying to join a Russian server where my friends are at and it won't let me join due to a high ping...

So, WHY does the servers limit the ping number? What is so wrong and disgusting to the servers about having a large ping? <_<

Um, you lag the game up for you and everyone else. No one wants to play with people who are flickering all over the map.

Is this a serious question?

DayZ's heavy client side nature means ping isn't as much of an issue as it is with most other games, you can play with a high ping and probably won't notice much difference, although you may appear to 'warp' for other players which is pretty annoying when you are aiming at someone and they constantly teleport every few metres, that's probably the main reason servers implement a ping limit.

Never stopped ANYONE from killing me and I play with 250-280ms all the time... regardless of server or time of the day or anything.

I don't see a problem if you have a ping of less than 250.

And yeah, max ping kicks do get annoying.

I can never notice the lag on any servers I go on, I live in Australia and play on some US servers, and my connection, to me, is completely fine.

This is something you should know when playing on PC...

Ping is the time it takes to send data (like a shot) from the moment you click untill the moment it reaches the server. Since everyone should have the same reaction time the server looks for a balanced ping (high pings = server lag)

Easy explanation, not the best one but you'll get the point

You do know what ping is right? It's a rough calculation of how fast your connection to the server is. The higher the number, the longer it takes for data to transfer, the more lag and shit that happens. It affects everyone else too, so try to avoid doing that to a large group of people if you can.

with the general sync issues, player lag is probably the least problem.

i seen players kicked for a ping of 140, thats slightly over the top..

Some of the local servers for me have a 100ping cap and I get around 30 ping on them. But I play on US servers because, for some reason, they tend to be quicker on load time despite the 200+ ping.

One of the main reason is simple.

The zombies you spawn in towns have their pathfinding done by the client who made the zombies spawn, not by the servers.

Then the client sends the zombies coordinates to the server, which broadcast them to the players around.

Zombies can seem to lag to other players, even if the managing client have a good ping.

If the managing client has a terrible ping, zombies would simply seem to teleport and would not be killable at all.

Then to keep things "fluid" it's better to keep pings lowest as possible.

I remember back in the day, playing Day of Defeat over a 56k modem with a 750ping, and maxping was 3000!

Not good.

It lags the whole server thats why

This is the reason.

If you're looking to play DayZ during daylight hours just search around, there are plenty of US servers that are set to daylight hours even when it night time hours in North America.

Third party launchers have browsers with bookmarks which makes it easier.

Ping is quite irrelevant in DayZ as even high latency players are offered higher bandwidth by the servers resulting in minimal play issues. The client side design of arma means often the higher ping player can be at a disadvantage versus a low ping player. I never play on Australian servers due to the amount of hackers and general idiots. I host my server in the US and only play with US/EU friends anyway. None of them see any problems when we are on the same server. The idea that one person with a ping above 250 and below 500 could affect a large group of players is absurd. Unless the server is from the 1990s :)

My ping is usually around 1000 and my clan and I have no problems whatsoever. I can kill and be killed just as easily so it doesn't really matter.

I can only play with 200+ ping, so to all those servers kicking because of the ping: fuck you.

Not everyone gets to play with 30 ping

Do u mean the servers we PAY for? U can't seriously find a server with a lower ping than 200? Fuck you.
