Progress with the KOS issue?

Recommended Posts

I know that bandit skins aren't ideal. But today, my first time playing since the towels were brought back, I had my first encounter that didn't end in me being shot on sight for a loooooong time.

I freshly spawned at Kamenka and decided it made sense to start out this new life with the short journey to Balota airfield. I was crawling towards the fence on the north side of the tower when a guy with a ghillie suit and AK came up to me. He went prone to my side, watching me. I announced that I was friendly and that I had nothing of value to loot (I keep my hatchet on my tool belt, since I'm friendly it's not worth holding and looking like a potential threat).

He said something over voice which I didn't quite hear "I'm going to give you *something*" then got up and left.

Shortly later I was headshotted through the tower window by someone else in the treeline (not the same guy, he went towards the hangars) so it wasn't all good. But that's fine.

Anyone else having more friendly encounters since the reintroduction of the towel?

With or without it, it seems to me that I have more friendly encounters than not. Perhaps it's the servers I play on *shrug* .

The only times I seem enter into a pvp war is if we are "surprised", neither knows the intention of the other and starts shooting (me included).

If there is time to see / communicate then most times it ends up friendly.

There is no "KOS issue" that game mechanics can fix without also destroying what makes the game what it is.

Only the community can change it.

I have a feeling it's people wanting the hero skin that's really dampening the FFA mindset. Which is fine by me, more suckers to kill.

You are absolutely right. That's why I said that bandit skins aren't ideal. My hope is that mechanics can help to nudge the community towards making those changes, and then eventually be removed. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Nothing new here, you didn't have a weapon so you weren't a threat. As soon as you're a threat again you're gonna get killed on sight. One life of mine I went on a high pop server running through cherno talking to myself, singing, and generally being nice. Even bloodbagged a random guy with a weapon. The point is that I wasn't shot because I was openly conversing with people and didn't have a weapon. I refused to pick up a weapon even when a decent one was found, because I knew someone would shoot me if they saw me with it.

Experiences vary from person to person I suppose. I've been killed while empty handed several times. I saw on the forums that I was far from alone in that respect.

I think it was my second day playing dayz (im not new to arma though) and had M16. I went to the fire station at NW-air and on a second level of that fire house was a guy with cz550 and M1911 aiming at my head and me aiming at his torso. We both froze for like 5 seconds ( I was about to pull it but after like two seconds I figured he may not be KoS type ). He than run up to the top level and I went down and went to loot the hangars while watching the window of said building.

He than came to the same hangar but didnt' expect me in there but we both seemingly chilled out and started to loot the place hangar after hangar. I than went further N and hear shots that sounds like SVD or CZ550 so I turn back and a another player chasing me dropped dead, along with few zed's. So I turn around, salute him, he does the same and we both head different direction.

That was pretty intense second day play, considering all these stories of KoS'es I have heard about ;)

oops, so back on topic - some ppl KoS you on sight no matter twats but it seems like if both of you have gear that the other guy dosn't really need or you pose no immediate thread you may come out of it

This reminds me of a game that came out on console "I am alive" Where most of the time you threaten NPCs with an empty gun and sometimes they do that to you. (bullets are given like... one by one in this game)

I wonder if this can ever be recreated in a non staged PvP scenario.

didn't notice much of a difference for now:

1x bandit KoS

2x bandit snipers at cherno, killing everyone

1x survivor replying "friendly", then shooting me

1x guy running away instead of shooting

If everybody in the game was friendly, the game would no longer be intense and nerve-wrecking; and that would completely destroy its purpose.

Assuming that the game had no PvP aspect, would you really go out of your way to walk through a treeline rather than an open field? Would you sit outside the place you want to loot for a good few minutes to make sure you're alone? No, I didn't think so.

The game essentially is a survival simulator, I know I wouldn't continue playing if it wasn't for the PvP aspect that makes you feel like every moment could be your last.

KOS is not a problem... its a choice, and a freedom, althought frustrating.... its an aspect of survival....

If i aint got no beans..... IDK weather your freindly or not.... i would eat your flesh and cook it on an open fire to ensure me walking away

IMO KoS has more to do with availability of good gear than it does about fear of dying. I was shot at today with hardly any decent gear by a guy maybe half a mile away. I had no way of knowing he was there, he didn't need to atack me. He just had a nice sniper rifle and wanted to use it.

You get to a point where you have so much good stuff all you can do for fun is PK. A useful solution would be to make military gear unbelievably rare, like a tiny fraction of what it is now. This would make most encounters for example winchester vs lee enfield. This would make the standoffs and battles longer, tenser, more fun and (as with real life) easier to run away from. Good shots who have mastered their weapons will do even better relatively speaking.

It's a former USSR map so the odd AK may not be out of the question, but a sniper or military assault rifle needs to be rare as rocking horse shit. You want to engage an another player? do it in close up: let's see how good you are now,

You have no idea why that sniper was there to begin with, he migh as well have very good reason for taking you out or did you alt f4? cause you said shot at not killed. A few days ago I shot at someone (hit him ones) at stray sobor with a sniper rifle, the guy alt f4's (such a pussy really) and prolly thinks I just kill him for fun. Well my friend was down in the city and I was he's over watch so my objective was to locate and take out any threat that would arise. So just because you get killed by a sniper doesn't necessarily mean you got killed because the sniper was bored or out to get people just for the sake of killing someone.

KOS is not a problem the problem is that the only viable way to play this game (efficient) is to kill people for their gear and that you really have no benefits in trusting random people.

I was running around with a hatchet in the middle of Cherno, near the fire station. Guy was the other side of town (or even outside it). He has no discernable reason to shoot at me, other than it would be fun. Not judging him, the game incentivises you to shoot other players with sniper rifles because it's not worth shooting zombies with it. You get a new toy, you want to use it. He obviously needed the practice because he fired three, maybe four shots and missed with all of them giving me time to get away.

Personally I'm a little disappointed every time time I upgrade my weapons. I'd love to be able to engage another player will an Enfield knowing he probably has similar, but chances are an opponent will have something good so I need to match that. I'm tempted to PK every time I get a new weapon just for the rush, but choose not to, but If the game made it harder even to be tempted I think that would be a step in the right direction.

This is such BS bro, I personaly, as fresh spawn always come out of cherno/electro with so many cans of beans and coke that at times I just don't collect even half of what I could have.

In the open far N_NW N-NE the food aint no scarce either, so I have no idea what you're implying here

I was playing yesterday on a non-official server with side-chat (ie. global text chat) on. It was one of the my coolest DayZ experiences ever.

Over side-chat, people were talking joking, making the experience a lot less lonely from the start. Mind you, players there seemed reasonably mature. When a guy spotted me, he spoke through sidechat, we joined together to look for loot, and then another guy, who had a chopper, offered to give as a ride. Overall, great friendly atmosphere in the server.

As the chopper tried to land north of elektro, he typed out: "Get to the choppa!!!". As me and my new friend rushed to get in in the middle of an open field, we began to hear shots. I managed to get into the MG seat of the chopper, and when I looked around, the guy who was with me was hit by a sniper round and died. "F**K! go up go up we're being shot at", I said to the pilot, and as he began the liftoff, he too, was shot and killed. The chopper fell back down, I tried to access the pilot seat, and for whatever reason, I was unable to. So I tried to run away zigzagging through the open field, but was 1-shotted by the same sniper.

So, yea, I think the one thing that will definitely help with KoS will be communication. Not necessarily open side chat on global servers, but radios and cellphones. We could only get this awesome scenario to happen because 1) we communicated to set up the heli pickup and 2) other guys saw us typing and planned an ambush.

Fortunately, my pilot friend respawned and managed to get the chopper back, I too respawned and after being killed by the same sniper again, finally managed to get a motorcycle and some basic gear, and spent the next four hours cruising through chernarus.

MOst of the time I tried to help out the newbies, transfuse the ones that are running out of blood, give them goods. But most of the time when I try too hard on getting friendly with a random encounter, either they shoot me, pass by or leave me with their tail of Zedz.

The last time I was shot kind of pissed me badly, the guy said he was friendly about 30 times. And took me and my teammate with no hesitation, my remington wasn't enough fast :( I will try to help out few ones, but definitly now : on doubt - shoot first then ask

Well, 90% of people who KoS have ghillie suits, so they don't give a fuck about the towel.

It's not a towel.
