A Modest Proposal

Remove deer stands and substitute for randomly spawning dead paratroopers / pilots hanging from trees with their legs gnawed to the bone by zeds. These would be better gameplay-wise compared to the static deer stand spawns everyone remembers by heart. Also much more cooler and believable, considering there are no deer in Chernarus. They could have the same loot as the deer stands and a few regular infected walking around nearby.

Give this man a medal! One of the best suggestions regarding the boring deer stands I've seen yet. I hope rocket will take a closer look at it.

Bump deer stands down to hunting rifles and implement OP's idea.

With a group of zombies gnawing at his feet, you'll either have to distract them or kill them.

I do like this idea a lot, really.

Instead of people just going from one fixed location to another that's already known and it's always there. Replacing deer stands with this system would be quite awesome. I mean, it would obviously have to be a random spawning system where the Paratroopers would be doing their 'landings' all across the Chernarus map. Naturally, it could very well be where a former deer stand placement is or somewhere random in a forest area. So, this would make the old method of 'deer stand' farming a lot more time consuming as one would actively had to comb forest areas in search for these downed paratroopers and collect loot.

Furthermore, it'd make the searching/item reward system in this case much more dynamic and luck based.

Maybe these could be added in like heli crash sites,with rare loot instead of removing deer stands..They could be the pilot of the crash. At this point, I think they should leave everything they can in game, just to have more content.

This is brilliant! It also makes the forests alot less secure and boring, as you risk running in to previously mentioned feet-gnawing Z's! the forests will be scary at night...

One of my favorite images from Lord of the Flies as a kid. And the dead guy in a parachute is a very zombie/survival story image. The idea of someone's failsafe not being enough to actually save them or, inadvertently, kill them.

This could probably be done with a randomly spawning tree graphic that you can walk through but which has an interactive paratrooper in it. What if the moaning of the zombie is a sign of the paratrooper with maybe a small glowing chemlight strapped to his chest so you can see him in the dark (or a beeping beacon...).

The sense of stumbling across treasure during your frantic dash through the apocalypse is one of the most effective things in DayZ, I think. And anything that randomizes the location of loot to encourage searching for loot in lieu of letting people farm it is a step in the right direction.

How about leaving deerstands, ths providing a static place for possible loot (And a place of potential conflict amongs scavenging players, much like towns), and add the random paratroops in addition to that?

I enjoy the idea, but I think it would be better as an addition. We should add deer as well, as it's kind of silly that we're hunting wild cows now.

As a side note, this doesn't have ANYTHING to do with eating poor children! A modest proposal indeed! Hmph.

I also thought of a some kind of light beacon but then it occurred to me it isn't the smartest thing to do with all the zeds and bean-hungry bandits roaming hither and thither. Perhaps a military flashlight pinned to his shoulder, painting the ground underneath in red at night. It wouldn't be as easy to spot and it would give a nice gloomy ambiance.

Too bad the Dev team isn't too keen on scripted events. I would've suggested one of those massive Lockheed cargo planes make a random supply drop once a week with high-end military grade equipment. Just imagine a server full of players all running towards the same field.
