Is anyone friendly

Recommended Posts

Let me share my latest DayZ experience.

Started at the beach, was nighttime, went to electro, got some supplies, and headed north. I'm still pretty new, so mostly i just wander avoiding zombies scavenging supplies. I make my way near Zelenogorsk, am gutting an animal for food when bam i get shot and i have a broken leg and am bleeding. I quickly bandage myself and head to the woods. I notice bullets missing all around me, the shooter must have fired several times and missed.

After several minutes of just waiting, I notice in chat that he is now asking for food. If you wanted food, why not just ask me, you can see i'm equipped with a hatchet, you could have kept your distance and just asked me. I tell him to piss off and then I abort.

Next day i log into a different server, and since i still have the broken leg i start crawling back to cherno, to hit the hospital for some morphine. After quite a while of crawling, and wedging a penny to hold down the w key, i arrive at the hospital, go in, get my morphine, fix myself, grab extra supplies and leave. There was a lee enfield in the hospital, so i grab that too, and attempt to hit up the other buildings around the corner. I walk out and bam, someone kills me.

I've been playing for a couple weeks, and have yet to meet anyone who is friendly. How am I supposed to meet anyone when the first thing someone does when they see you is shoot you? At any rate, probably going to quit this for a while, maybe try again some time in the future.

At the moment humanity is just being reintroducted after it was reduced to nothing in DayZ, for the last couple of weeks new and old players have been lead to believe that the goal of DayZ is not survival, but murder. So most friendlies are usually living isolated in the wilderness and avoid human contact, while other players deathmatch in the populated areas.

This will take long time to change and right now you're better off treating players as less-intelligent, well-armed zombies.

Friendly... What is this?

But seriously, I'm friendly until a point.

A. I have gear I don't want to lose to the first person I see (IE: Rare items, or guns I like).

B. You have something I want. For all you know, I could be missing a compass, and a subtle pass would give away your gear. "Do you know which way is north-east?"

"Yes"

*BANG*

I don't kill unarmed players, unless they stare at me for too long. This is only a problem if they haven't been following me around for awhile. I also don't kill people with, "MEDIC" in their name. No tag servers makes this difficult, so that is why I don't actively hunt unarmed players (that, and they tend to not have anything worth the bullets I put into them).

I'm friendly, but most of the time I'm just watching you from distance. Unless of course I've seen you kill. Then the hunt is on.

I am friendly, unless it's a high risk area I am in.

No 'friendly' people because this game lacks an end-game or dynamic game choices. Even I, after playing for a couple weeks, am trying to figure out the 'point' of this game. I just hunt other players now.

Also, you can only communicate with other players that are within 100m from you. If you see someone 400m away you can't talk to them to find out what their intentions are, so you almost default to violence.

A few days ago, I found a new character hiding in a factory. He told me that he was still figuring out the controls. I gave him my axe, some painkillers, and some bandages. Helped him through the gear menu - how to pick it up and use it. Then, I was on my way.

Yesterday, I started a new character (spawned in Electro).

I turned a corner deep into the city, and right in front of me was this decked out character. We stared at each other for a bit (I was unarmed) and then he asked me if I wanted his axe. I said sure, he dropped it, and then, by the time I looked up from the ground taking it, he was gone. It wasn't much, but because of that axe, I cleared out some zombies around a corpse that had everything you could imagine (ghille suit, nvgs, rangefinder, all other equipment, sniper rifle with ammo, Coyote Backpack, etc.)

Friendlies are out there, they are just harder to find. When you do find them though, it is a really great feeling.

Don't stop looking for them!

Did you just admit to aborting in a fire-fight situation?

M rated games should not be sold to minors.

Nothing you can give as an excuse makes what you did, OK.

He was playing the game, and you took that away from him.

If you don't want other players to engage you, then go play single player.

This game is obviously not for you, if you are a bitch and will DC when engaged.

Disgusting.

My three stages of friendliness:

Stage 1

Me: I'm hungry, could you give me some beans?

You: No.

Stage 2

Me: Give me your beans or I'll shoot.

You: No.

Stage 3

Blam!

Om nom nom.

As long as I'm not in any danger, I'm friendly.

And never shoot on sight, except for wookies, especially ones operating sniper rifles.

Your gonna get Killed, that is a fact.

Buy an Mic, they are useful for all encounters. Join a group / clan.

I share the frustration, I have had many encounters where i was killed for no reason, I have lost more great loot to Murderers who were so scared of me they opened fire out of fear.

It's a game, You need to join a clan if you want friends.

I'm typically freindly provided you don't suprise me. I've helped several new spawns get off the coast and get geared up. Made a freind that way, and now I don't have to play alone.

Some people are still friendly even though everything in-game encourages small groups that kill other players.

no need to insult him for aborting, the exploit is being fixed, there are more tactful ways to tell players not to D/C during combat.

Now I'm friendly and won't shoot you on sight, I will most likely try to get with in VOIP range, so I can strike up a conversation with you.

Servers with side chat enabled (if there still are any) is a much better way of finding friendly players. It's very easy for 2 people to spot each other at 50m+ and if they do... without anyway to talk to each other most just shoot. Its either me or you right ?

Ya despite being shot at regularly (even when unarmed), I still refuse to shoot first, and generally try to help new spawns on the coast.

I get killed almost every time but hey, that's how she goes. We spawn and try again.

By the way, To the guy on US 177 that script-killed me last night (after missing every shot) while I was riding my motorbike on the coast (ghillie suit, sniper rifle, all tools, NVG, lots of food) you're a really shity shot, and I still found my body and gear before you did.

From comments he's made in the past, Rocket seems to want DayZ to encourage a lot more cooperation between players. That was his reason for removing weapons from new characters.. so they would cooperate with one another from the start. But all it did was make them easy pickings. Unfortunately, these minor changes and cosmetic tweaks are just not going to get the job done. The internet is filled with too many gamers who find amusement in griefing their peers, and the only way he's ever going to be able to counter that is with some drastic, immersion breaking rules.

All MMO-esque developers face this same challenge. Lots of them have cool ideas that are inevitably ruined because you just can't give players nice things and expect them to play nicely. Unless your sandbox is filled with safeguards enforcing nice play, all it's going to attract are bullies.
