Is it really each unique person tho. I'm pretty sure there are a few people who have multiple characters by owning multiple cd-keys. I'd assume that unique players is somehow tied to cd-key since that's how you're characters are identified as yours in the hive. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm assuming when they display a "unique player" count, it is probably the number of Arma 2 CD-Keys that have logged in to play the Day Z mod.

They display the total figure of this on the front page now in big numbers.

You can see the daily unique players on the right in a smaller area with more statistics.

A unique player constitutes a "CD" Key...

1CDKey=1 player...no matter how many "players" are made on 1 cd key, there will only ever be 1 "unique" player tied to that.

So what it means is X=Unique players really means X=CD keys playing DayZ.
