In game GPS

While looking for a spot for a camp site, I was reading off some coordinates on the map to two other members of my party. Both had GPS units. For a few minutes there was some confusion with the coordinates I was giving, when one of my party members said I was reading the coordinates off wrong. I double checked my map and read off the Latitude then Longitude. Again, the coordinates where not matching up. So we realized that the GPS spits out the coordinates Long/Lat. I know of two commercial grade GPS unites in the real world that did this too... until the manufacturers caught flack from the IMO(international maritime organization) and subsequently switched to Lat/Long(one company did, the other merged with Garmin).

Anyone else have issues with this at first?

you go along the corridor and up the stairs. in game GPS works perfectly mate.

edit. also longitude and latitude are given in degree's and are relevant to the equator. the in game map is grid squares only and they work fine.

000 013 would be the bottom west corner of the map for example

I get the grid system. Its how they are read via GPS unit.

Hm, no. Never had an actual GPS in RL.

Doesn't make any sense to me reading it different than the way it's implemented, but I'm pretty sure that's because I'm too used to left upper corner being 0/0 (x/y).

I was aware of Cartesian coordinates, I didn't realize thats what the grid system was built around.

I served 5 years in the USN. 3 of those years I spent looking at nautical charts and coastal surveys while aboard the USS Chicago with bubbleheads and a few stints with the 7th Fleet on a Destroyer around Guam and the Philippines. And not once in that time did I come across the use of Cartesian Coordinates. Maybe I should play video games more?

Indeed. Like Blindingsun has shown in his links, the grid numbers are not Lat/Long based but Eastings/Northings.

dude half of everything anyone uses was invented by either a frenchman, an italian or a greek. not relevant to the gps argument.

anyway. of course you wouldn't have used Cartesian Co-ords if you're bloody navy and reading nautical maps... not the same as land based maps by any means. you've got no topography at sea for one thing.
