Range finding with mil dots

Recommended Posts

I just got an AS50 and I looked up some tutorials on how to determine range without a rangefinder using the mil dots. It seemed easy enough 1800/h = r where h is the height in mil dots and r is the range in meters.

The problem is that when I did this in a server with nameplates, the range that the game is telling me, is completely different from the range I'm calculating using my scope. The nameplate seems to be right and the range calculations I'm doing are wrong based on the formula. Whats going on?

For example a standing zombie is 2 mil dots high and so that means its 900 meters away right? But no because the game is telling me its only 200 meters away! WTF! Thats not even close!

WHATS GOING ON!

The AS50 scope is bugged. You can't properly estimate the range with its mildots.

Its Height of target in meters x 1000 then divide that by the height of the target in mildots.

So, since you used 1.8m, I'll do the same.

1.8m x 1000 is 1800

Divided by the height of the target in mildots, lets say its 4mildots.

1800/4 = 450 meters. Is the range. Since you can't zero in 50s, zero to 400 and aim slight high.

That's the general way with most snipers. However, as I posted above, it doesn't work on the AS50, as its scope is bugged. He'll have to switch a sniper rifle in order to use mildots or find a rangerfinder.

I believe that you have to be fully zoomed in to use the mildots. As in x12 magnification not the x3 magnification.

quote:

"To estimate the range to a standing player/target (height = 1.8m) while using the AS50 with 12x magnification, use the following formula: r = 1375/h (r is the target's range in meters and h is the target's height in mils). A standing player that is 5 mils tall will be 275 m from the AS50 operator."

Look it up on DayZ wiki.

Well, assuming the game doesn't have a front focal plane.

Then your zoom will effect your range. So you need to find the range with a second focal plane. So when you're fully zoomed in with a rifle, the equation should work, but if you're not. Then you'll have to do a bit more math for the difference in zoom. So if the range when not fully zoomed in is x5, then you need to multiply your results by 2 to get the x10 reading. Or just zoom in and do it from there :P

This explains why I find that gun impossible to use. I might not need this DMR after-all....

oh me likey, thanks bl1p.

Nps m8..

I made screenies of the range tables for most of the guns so i can just place the table on my other monitor when playing

but to be honest I normally panic and forget to check .. then just shoot like a maniac and die :)

So which DMR table is correct then? Because Wiki says that it's zeroed at 400m and the old arma 2 tables say 300m?

The center is zeroed at 300.

Or you could always get the ol' trust worth SVD out and use that delicious built in Range Finder.

The AS50 is NOT bugged, u simply need to zoom to the max. however, what most people don't know is that to zoom with the AS50, AND i think the L85 aswell u need to zoom with numpad + for some reason. This will put you to max zoom and make those calculations accurate
