Some Info on the Inventory System for us Noobs!!!

Recommended Posts

So after a whole day of playing I found some things out that aren't really easy to pick up on. The Inventory System in this game, well, honestly...it kinda sucks. As such there are some bugs out there people should know about, especially Day 1 noobs like yours truly.

Giving Stuff to Friends:

First, things tend to disappear. Last night I met a new friend and was trying to help him out by putting some stuff in his backpack. I managed to target and open his backpack but everything I tried to put in it disappeared from my pack but never made it into his pack. We tried looking on the ground (there was a pile of dead zeds there) but we couldn't find any of the stuff I tried to give him (bandages and food).

New Backpacks:

When you find a new backpack you can pick it up and use it. I clicked and clicked and no matter what I tried to hit I couldn't pick the damn thing up. Then by accident I hit the select key (I re-mapped it to wheel up on my mouse) and a hand appeared giving me the option to either open the pack or pick it up. By doing this I was finally able to pick it up and use it. You have to open the pack to put things in it which should be common sense, but, it's not quite that easy because you have to transfer stuff to it. (explanation next)

Transfering Stuff To Your Pack:

I've found the best way to do this is to put the stuff you want to put in your pack on the ground first. Then target the pile of stuff, open inventory, open backpack, then pick up the stuff you dropped on the ground and put it from the ground into your backpack. The only other way is to have enough space on you to put it in your inventory and from there into your pack, but, you have to be carrying almost nothing to do this. Also be weary because sometimes dropping stuff on the ground makes what-ever you dropped disappear.

Closing Statement:

Overall I would say the inventory system seems to be buggy as hell. The interface could use some work to be a little more user-friendly. With a little time studying the controls you should be able to get the hang of it like I am (though I'm still learning).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Slightly Off Topic Statement on making New Friends:

Out of the few people I met last night most of them were cool. They didn't shoot me on sight and I didn't shoot them. I had a run-in with some hackers who teleported me around and then waited a bit before they killed me. For the most part though the few fellow noobs like my-self I ran into were just trying to get a handle on things and stay alive. Keep that in mind as you play. Not everyone is out to gank noobs on sight for a few laughs.

I hope the info on Inventory helps a few people out.

It's easy, the only thing I dont like is the dissapearing items, but thats not hard to avoid.

How do you avoid it when messing with your inventory?

Don't put items into your backpack (Or your friends), when its full.

that was the first thing i learned about inventory space.

besides that, its fairly easy not to lose items.

You can also transfer items using the list of items without dropping them. Because they do tend to disappear sometimes.

-Open your inventory, scroll, or click on backpack and click 'open bag'.

-You will see an inventory count to the left and/or right of each item and at the upper part of the little window it should say 'Alice Pack 10/20'(or whatever) telling you how much space you have left. Click on item picture (once!) to highlight it or click on item in list.

-The numbers to the left of the items are in your backpack, the numbers to the right are in your front slots. You can use the arrows that show up to the left and and right of the inventory item to either move stuff into your front slots or move them into the backback.

You have to watch the label on the window, by the way. If you are looking at, say a fire, and bring up inventory the label at the top of the window will say fireplace. If you use the item arrows to the left you will be dumping items into the fireplace. Make sure if you have to transfer stuff around around to make space for something you want to pick up from the floor you shift yourself away (to where you no longer see the little green gun symbol) from that area until you work out the space you need.

The arrows will also work to transfer items from one backpack to another. But only between 2 backpacks.

If you're having problems with some of the commands, Alt+Tab is your best friend. Google what you need and apply. You'll memorize it sooner if you deal with the problem yourself, rather than reading about it and not acting upon it.

Good advice. Much appreciated.

Indeed. It's easier for me to just find a safe place and hit "esc" and look at the command list. For some reason every time I minimize DayZ it knocks out my sound and I have to log off and back on.
