Realistic Chat Groups

Recommended Posts

Rocket has already stated that he intends to remove global chat, which is good. So, I assume this means the only group you can type into or talk into is local, and both voip and text chat will be limited to the local area of the player.

What if instead, there were three groups: whisper, talk and shout. You would be able to cycle through these groups just as you can cycle through groups now (global, local, vehicle, etc.). Each would have an increasing radius for players to be able to hear voip or see text, with text only appearing above players.

Distance from player would reduce "volume"; meaning voip would get quieter with distance, text would be more transparent at distance. The radius would also be the radius for alerting zombies, with volume being equal to probability of alerting zombies.

Example:

You chatting in text, in talk mode. A player 30 m away gets a volume of say 0.6, so the text has a transparency of 0.6 on that players screen. If a zombie is also 30 m away, there is a 0.6 chance of alerting it.

Like it too!

Dont really like informations being shared in side chat, that you couldnt know about, because you are miles away.

Sort of already exists for voice through the sheer fact of you yourself can speak at different volumes but doesn't exist for text and trying to whisper to just one person is pretty much impossible and shouting tends to annoy neighbours, decent suggestion tbh

Thanks for the positive feedback. Like I said, I think Rocket already had a similar idea but with out the whisper, talk and shout groups, so it's not totally original.

What would be even better is if voice only had one group - and the radius in which players could hear you/zombies would be alerted to you was based on how loud you actually were over mic. Would be really hard to program though :P

Which means you would sit by your computer and scream? Doesn't sound that nice although it's realistic in a sense.

This has all been suggested before though, speak, shout and different radios etc. I hope it's implemented eventually but it seems like it's actually a limitation in the Arma 2 engine.

Yes with bind, not with voice.

Scream à 3 o'clock doesn't sound good for neigbourhood+ it s not hard to code I think it s NOT possible.

If you scream into your mic it will saturate... that s all you will have.

You can hit 10 db wispering against your mic and same time be unaudible if shouting like crazy far from your mic.

So the only solution is key binding. (only CHKillroy can scream in his microphone, and we all thanks him to do so^^)
