My theory on what happened to the Military

So, I've been playing for a while and one day I went to Green Mountain which got me thinking about why so many soldiers were there, and what the military did during the outbreak. So here is my theory.

Now, throughout Chernarus there are many things that make it clear the military was involved in everything and there a few locations with an obvious Military presence. Those are:

Chernogorsk

Stary

Balota

NW Airfield

Green Mountain

Berezino

Now, a few of these locations have tents, and the only ones that aren't for medical purposes ( or at least labeled as medical tents) are Berezino and Stary. Due to the fact that the only places with medical tents are on the coast leads me to believe that the coast, having the only hospitals around, and being home to the biggest cities in the area, was where the Military decided to set up aid locations. Now, I'll jump to Green Mountain for a moment, for anyone who has ever been there, you know its small, and filled with dead soldiers, and a pile of bodies. Now, that is to be expected, but the thing is, Green Mountain is just a small radio station. Why would they have so many soldiers stationed there, and why would they be piling up the bodies? Well, I think that they had a few soldiers there to guard the station while it broadcasted some type of message ( most likely to alert citizens to go to the coast), but as various locations on along the coast began to get overrun, they used it as a fall back position of sorts, probably due to its tower being useful for lookouts, being on a hill, and having the 2 stage fence with a chain link fence as the outer fence, and a concrete wall as the inner part, it seems to be quite a easily defensible location. If they were holding out there, that would explain the piles of rotting corpses and large amount of dead soldiers and Infected soldiers in the area, and it would provide a line of communication to the higher ups. Of course, its quite obvious they didn't last very long, and they were overrun.

Now, onto the inland locations.

There are 2 military locations inland. The NW airfield, and Stary.

I think that they were eliminating infected citizens, or doing clean up operations here, because none of the tents are prepped for any kind of medical attention, and there is a large field of body bags. Now, onto the airfield. I think its pretty obvious with this location. The NW airfield most likely served as a military base before hand, and it would obviously be an important asset to the military for flying in troops, and flying out VIP's.

Now onto the last part of my theory: Crashed helicopters

Occasionally you can find downed choppers which spawn loot that is usually British, or US weaponry. I think that after the situation started getting out of hand, nations from other parts of the world came to help and this was the fate they suffered. This would also indicate that the infection has not reached the Western world at this time.

TLDR MILITARY TRIES TO HELP OUT ON THE COAST, GETS OVERRUN, FALLS BACK INLAND, FAILS. EVERYONE DIES. THE END.

Yea you can clearly see that they were overrun by zombies. Sometimes its sad to see the military corpses. It takes the hope to find a zone, where people could act social to each other. That is the reason why the community got to do this, rocket cant and he should not. But we, the players in this world should stop this random killing and bring law to the lawless land.

The map is in the base Arma game, but the little things like destroyed cars, debris, dead bodies, etc., was hand placed by Rocket.

I like the theory, its plausible. Until (if ever) an official *storyline* comes forth, I think its cool that the players can construct the downfall of Chenarus through their own minds. We have no idea what started the infection, no idea why we spawn on the southern coast, we just do. There's been a few posts on radios being found and creepy music/messages being played across them, whether they're legit or not I don't know, but until notes/books/non-zombie NPCs show up (again, probably won't and arguably shouldn't) this theory works for me.

No immunity to virus/disease (like the civilians) or killed by zombies/people seems the most logical thing. In the stand-alone I hope they replace these bodies with ones in further stages of decompostion to reflect this.

Other indicators could include more civilian bodies, crashed cars, old blood splater etc.

The DayZ lore isn't very well established yet, when this goes stand-alone when the new/updated map is designed I'm sure Rocket will fill in the blanks a bit on these things. I think he's already worked out some of this stuff, he hints at it alot in interviews.

The military was killed by Bandits. No matter how many Bandits the military was able to kill, they just kept spawning over and over. Military positions were overrun simply by force of numbers.

My take,

The Soviets have a long history of biological weapons research and experimental technology. While they signed the Geneva Convention which banned both bio and chemical weapons the Soviets continued to research in secret using their own citizens as test subjects. Russia had two problems, one were rebels in Chernarus and two the need to advance their bio weapon programs secretly. They codenamed the project DayZ. The soviets would deal with both problems. First they setup health centers in Chernarus in key locations under the "we are here to help" guise, daily propaganda was spread by flyers "we are not your enemies the Chernarus rebels are the cause of all your misery. We offer health, food and water". they handed out cans of beans and coca cola/pepsi cans, a rare treat in that area.

These psyop propaganda posters were delivered by soldiers and by air/helicopters to several cities in Chernarus. However, soon the military would face an even greater threat then the rebels. The prisoners of war who they experimented on were coming back to life, returning from the dead, their muscles working with incredible agility and strength which overwhelmed military's limited resources in Chernarus. A distress beacon was sent from the green mountain but the infection spread rapidly, and even though the military tried to contain the situation they were simply outnumbered and overwhelmed by the rapid spread of the virus. The lab that was responsible for developing the virus was burned down and destroyed, it's location is unknown. the scientists who developed the DayZ weapon are missing and presumed dead. The lead general of the army deplyed to Chernarus is also missing and their whereabouts are a complete mystery...

They're a soviet satellite state's military, of course they're incompetent. M1 Abrams Tank vs zombies? 10 g's on the tank. Even something like a Bradley, what are they gonna do, smack it to death? Just gotta carry enough BMG ammo. Could load main gun with canister shot, THAT would be something to see ;)

This is not really a dayz-story, so I had to open a new topic for it.

Time just went really slowly. There were sweatdrops running down jung Major Vasilevichs forehead. He did not like were he was, and he did not envy what was to come in the next minutes, he didn't even know why he was commanded here, but it was his duty to obey. The lamps in the bunker flickered, it was hard to get elektricity working since the infestation began and the emergency generator was on it's limits, but there was only this bunker left of the government. It took only a few days to cause mayhem in the capital city, and all but the military communication broke down weeks ago. The lack of seatings in the concrete hallway forced the Major to stand next to the door.

"Major! Come in!" he heard from inside, so he carefully opened the door. The room was full of objects. There was a map of the whole country, and everwhere there were little red flags pinned to it. Medical supplies were stacked in one conor, ABC-suits and medicaments and much more. The Major doubted that this could help anyone. All around the room were the last newspapers pinned to the wall. But there really were only 3 pices of furniture. A really old-looking desk, with parts of a handguns spreaded over it. The General was busy cleanning and oiling it.

"Sit down already, I got orders for you." he grunted at the Major.

"You are responsible for the Chernarus district, right?"

"Yes, Sir."

"You lost the control there," he raised his voice, "That should not have happened. Chernarus is of major importance!"

"Pardon me, I can't quite follow." the Suprised Mayor replied.

"You know that there is a important wood mill in Berezino, you know how serious that is for the whole human race? No Woodmill means no toilet paper, and what are we going to wipe our asses with if we survive the apocalypse? EVER THOUGHT OF THAT?"

"...er..."

"And the tincan factorys. What are people to do without canned beans? Cenarus also has the highest concentration of sports huntsmen tourism in the whole world. We can't loose that! And the 3 little airbases! Not to mention the historical worth of the courtyside with it's 4 castle ruins!"

"...so, what's your point?" the Mayor carefully asked.

"MY POINT?" The General seemed to explode, "I want it taken back! Immidiatly! Bring all the men you can there!"

"But Sir, we don't have enough soldiers!"

"Then send the Police! Arm them with the best guns you can find! I want a sniper on every hill in this whole country!"

"But Sir, we only have very few trained snipers. Those guns are also very expensive and manufactured in low numbers."

"I DON'T CARE! Arm the regular soldiers with the best guns if that's needed to take back the district! And call for the british."

"The what?"

"THE FUCKING BRITISH! Tell them that they are to send helicopters with elite troops! Make sure they are equipped with the best gear!"

"But Sir, a untrained man can shoot a infected with the simplest guns."

"I WANT ELITE TROOPS! WITH NIGHTVISION, SILENCED GUNS, AND GUNS THAT CAN TAKE DOWN AN ELEPHANT!"

And that's the most accurate backround possible for dayz. My point: 0.5cal sniper guns in a remote area? I think not. Remove the top weapons, make the best sniper gun the Cz and the best assault rifle the AK-SU. Everything above restricts my gameplay experience for the game atmosphere.

All these enviromental cues can convey alot of narrative about the world of DayZ without actually saying it or leaving it to the imagination of the players. The Left 4 Dead did a good job at this with the survivor graffiti and other setups.
