pandadragonthing 11 Posted July 24, 2012 So i've been checking the stats on some servers and so far everyone runs on Windows? Can you only host Arma 2 servers on Windows? I read up on it and thats not the case. Server admins might have better luck running on a linux box as even Windows will hog up a little ram and other resources from the computer! Also what's up with some of the server hosts? From what I have read it seems most of them to be shady and are using illegitimate copies of windows for their servers, hell, maybe even multiple servers on the same box. So someone should really look into making the conditions for just running a server more strict, possibly blacklisting shady server hosts! Thanks, would love to fix my FPS Hit from shittie servers! :D
shiromikan 217 Posted July 24, 2012 DayZ doesn't like Linux too much and isn't supported by the Dev Team (yet).
pandadragonthing 11 Posted July 24, 2012 Just read that up, kind of a bummer. It would be a poor choice not to enable the support of linux servers...
ryahn 112 Posted July 24, 2012 It would be great to get it on linux. I know I read a post somewhere that someone had it running in wine.
pandadragonthing 11 Posted July 24, 2012 I don't think Wine is the answer as it can be unstable from time to time but who knows!
Orcworm 18 Posted July 24, 2012 It runs fine on wine, though to be fair I don't know of any other way to get it going under Linux atm.
pandadragonthing 11 Posted July 26, 2012 How complicated is the server? Does it need to be completely rewritten for linux use?
shawnbayer75 83 Posted July 26, 2012 How complicated is the server? Does it need to be completely rewritten for linux use?A lot of the issues are with ARMA and not DayZ.
pandadragonthing 11 Posted July 26, 2012 Arma 2 can be put on linux, I don't know how its done exactly but the wiki for setting it up says you can but since they don't cover it really probably means its a bit of hassle. If Arma 2 can support linux servers than this sounds like a DayZ issue... please correct me if im wrong tho :)
Zoop 343 Posted July 26, 2012 The minor performance hit from using Windows shouldn't make a difference if you've got a decent server, which most of us have.
pandadragonthing 11 Posted July 26, 2012 (edited) http://www.networkwo...rver-linux.htmlhttp://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/204423/five_reasons_linux_beats_windows_for_servers.htmlI've always looked at it as the newbies use windows( for anything ) and the pros use linux( for anything ) but there are limits to both... why I use Windows for gaming ;D Edited July 26, 2012 by PandaDragonThing
ElRolle 97 Posted July 26, 2012 ArmA2 has an official Linux server freely available here so it's not a problem. The problem is the Arma2NET library that DayZ uses - it requires .NET Framework 4 to run, which obviously isn't available on Linux.
pandadragonthing 11 Posted July 27, 2012 Sho shad. Hope they get their shiz nizzles together and optimize server :D
