It does come down to preference. The M4 is nice for getting up close and for when you want to go fullauto (not that often in my experience, but it happens). I was running with one for a while and loved it, but traded out for a Bizon I found in a tent city (sadly the server that I stored the M4 on went offline for two days and when it came back up everything including my own tent and jeep seem to have re-set). That character died when I tried to jump over barbed wire... On my current life a buddy gave me his M14 because he thought it was too loud and wanted to go with a AK-kobra. I have to say that I am loving the M14. Yes it is loud, no it doesnt have burst or full-auto but it still fires in simi decently well and seems very accurate. It fills the role I most like to play in my group perfectly, mid-range fire support. You don't want to be killing zeds with it because of how loud it is, but thats what sidearms are for anyway.

M4 is only stronger under 35 meters and if the target is moving. M14 is still good for close range, which is the only range where the

M4 is a competitor. As range increases, M14 gets even better.

That's a tough choice, my favorite gun (M1a/M14) vs the only M4 I like in Day Z. The M4 is great because of the red dot sight and flash light, but I'd go with the M14. One shot stopper from 600m out, a red dot zeroed at 350m (look, he looks like he has a pimple for a head/ *squeeze trigger*/dead sniper), and a fashionable walnut stock (still looking for the ability to butt stroke people, Rocket).

Just want to note that m14 is not really a sniper, it does not have magnified optics and can't reliably hit targets at true sniper ranges (700+ m). The best combo is m14 and DMR (proper sniper) as they share the same powerful mags. I do wish for a proper full auto assault rifle /smg when in cqq. I particularity like ak-74u, for some reason I'm much more accurate with it's iron sights then with any other AK

M14 and a DMR in the backpack. Both use same mags. Nice combo if you've got a decent sized backpack.

The DMR isn't a proper sniper either. It's a Designated Marksmen Rifle. It's supposed to fill the gap between infantrymen and sniper. If you're going to get technical then at least know your stuff. They are also the exact same gun, one just has a scope and isn't wooden.

Nah, the DMR ingame is a USMC M14 DMR, the M39 looks completely different.
