Shutup and take my money

Recommended Posts

A few guys from across the planet Earth came together with a brilliant idea. They modded a war simulator into a zombie survival simulator and it took off. Nearly 1 million unique players across the globe, bolstering sales of the base game and bringing in mad money for the developers. Despite its bugs and hackers, hundreds of thousands of people came back to loot, shoot and scoot around on bicycles day after day. Its been a few months, and if anything has come out of this test is that Rocket and (maybe) Bohemia are sitting on a gold mine.

So what now?

People have already paid for Arma II and OA, proof that people are willing to spend money on this form of entertainment. Bohemia is hard at work on its next iteration of war simulator whose sales were never THAT great. It was never a blip on many player's radars. Rocket and his team are hard at work tackling the issues of creating a game of this scope, from dealing with hackers to programming and maintaining Hive servers.

What we know.

- Arma II will probably not sufficiently provide the ground work for Rocket's vision. We are pretty much nearing the peak of its feature set.

- It is unlikely that Arma III will either.

- Going standalone is very expensive.

- The game is fun, unique, immersive... the game is awesome (in theory).

Whats next?

There are a few ways to go about it, and I'm sure Rocket and his team are dedicating a huge chunk of their time to figuring out how best to monotize while providing a sweet gaming experience for us all (as those kind of go hand in hand).

I'm sure offers have been sent out to Rocket and his team. Maybe even from Bohemia, maybe not, who knows? I think we can all agree that the Arma III engine can provide a good starting point for a real standalone game as we now have a feel for it. Though it can be clunky and glitchy, this is nothing good coding can't fix. But purchasing the rights to the engine is expensive as ballz. Even if you worked for the guys who made it. And even if they have already profited from YOUR ALPHA.

I think its about time Bohemia and Rocket worked more closely together to get this ship out of port. It would be nice to see some kind of dialogue between them (I want to know about it if it's already happened) I mean, we can't sit around and wait for updates to a mod every 2-3 weeks thinking the final product will ever be, well, final. Plus, who is going to feed and clothe Rocket and his team?

I say take my $15-$25 dollars now, raise some cash, hire some more people, fix things and lets get to a final product before 2015. Natural Selection II did it. I preordered their game because I love NS1. That hails in comparison to DayZ. Even if only half us pay, that enough to do a TON of work on this game and get it that much closer to done. Thats something like 6 or 7 million dollars at 20 bucks a pop. Thats enough for the dev team to live and work on this game for a long time.

I work in the music industry and fan funding is becoming HUGE. Recently an artist raised more than a million dollars for 1 record. Same thing applies here. There is no risk. You've already tested your product. We love it. If it were better, we as a community and maybe 10 times more of us would love it even more.

Anyways, I appreciate your vision, tenacity and desire to keep your vision your own. I appreciate the countless hours of enjoyment your game brings me and my posse (though my girlfriend doesn't). I think you guys are doing a stellar job, but perhaps, at the rate you are growing, and the rate at which the community is demanding fixes and features, you need some capital and more people.

Best of luck,

A true DayZ fan,

Dima

I'm with this dude on this.

Agree!

More money = bigger team = faster and better final product

Yes, but Bohemia did not say "Hey Rocket, stop working on Arma and make a Zombie survival mod." In fact, I have heard the complete opposite. Not to spread rumors, and please correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding was that he approached Bohemia with this idea and they didn't like it and told him it could never be profitable (wrong... sorry). I'm sure they appreciate the 700% sales increase this mod has provided now.

I have been expecting for weeks an OFFICIAL announcement from Bohemia and Rocket about partnering to work on a standalone DayZ game based on Arma III engine. Who knows what goes on behind closed doors. I'm hoping this thread might clarify.

I totally agree on the points you made. The thing is chances are they are going to hold out for a while before releasing a standalone. Why? Because they are already making heaps of cash from Arma 2 sales. Chances are BoH have approached Dean and said, keep the mod going for a while so we can get some more sales of Arma 2 and we will back you when you decide to release a standalone. It would make good business sense to do this.

That makes sense. I hope Rocket gets a big fat bonus check.

If the rumor is true, you have heard the complete opposite of the fact.

Wrong, Rocket never approached Bohemia with this but some different people and they told him it could never be profitable.Rocket started working for BI sometime in january on multiplayer for Arma 3 and made Dayz in his spare time just to test some things for Arma. But after success of Dayz they told him to work on Dayz full time...

Dean did approach a lot of different studios and publishers (but not bohemia) with his idea, and they all said that it wouldnt work. in fact, i would've said the exact same thing 4 months ago. nobody could've seen this coming. but since the huge success of dayz, BIS is supporting him a lot, and afaik he is working only on dayz atm. i'm fairly curtain that dayz will become a standalone game based on arma3 by the first quarter of '13.

No, BI support Rocket full time. Rocket himself said that he first want to test game mechanics that are going to be in standalone and he also said that this year he will announce (or release?) something (standalone?). You must understand that BI cant just give Rocket people, as they are small studio and currently finishing Arma 3 and CC..

The amount of money they have made from sales in the past 3 months, they can hire as many people as they need to work on this project. Again, chances are they are sticking with a smaller team and holding out because they want to maximize profits. It makes perfect business sense and in the long run benefit the studio. Don't always rely on soundbites from interviews either. With large money making projects like this there's always more often than not someone higher up the chain pulling the strings regardless of if it's someones personal project.

This /\ They have made a killing on Arma II and OA sales. Everything has been rather hush hush though, wouldn't you say? We rarely, if ever, hear anything about Bohemia's involvement, leading most of us to believe that they are not being proactive.

Regarding the pulling of the strings:

Agreed, I just want to know who is pulling the strings and where. Rocket seems pretty adamant about the community being involved in the making of this game and it seems strange so little is said about Bohemia.

PS. My apologies for getting my story wrong. I knew he approached someone, didn't know who and can't quiete remember where I read the Bohemia thing, but I'm sure it was in this forum.

None of you have ANY clue about what is going on with Dean an d BI.

The facts are;

  • BI want to create a MMO version of 'hungry hungry hippos'
  • Rocket will keep this mod going and plans to add elements from the Twilight series.
  • ????
  • Profit.

You're right but it's actually it's pretty easy to come to some sort of conclusion in regards to what's going on. When large amounts of money are involved things are usually on a set path. You've only got to look at the questions Dean asked to the community last week in his thread about development direction. Sift through those questions and you can get a pretty good picture of what is going on.

As Dima said though, it would be nice to get some sort of official announcement of who is actually running the show. We are part of the community and are curious to know.

You make it sound easy to find people who would make this. BI is studio in Czech Republic, they cant just hire random people. People who have experienc in makeing games in CZ are in some other studios and peope from outside? Yes, but to work effectively you need them move to their HQ in CZ as Rocket moved there just recently and that's not that easy. They need time for this.

Rocket communicate with Dayz community as he's the one who will be making (or lead the development) of Dayz. As for BI they are open and communicative studio. They have close to the community, they even hire people from community that are making mods. And i'm not talking mods that are making them money. Just go to BI forums

You dont hear about Bohemia's involvement??And what about all the beta patches? They pull of some people from development of Arma 3 to help Rocket with Dayz...

What about the Beta patches? Have you seen the patch notes? The log? Correct me if I'm wrong but, It almost seems like they fix multiplayer issues for everything BUT DayZ.

Indeed it has to be obvious to BI that this game can be massive, hopefully they'll decide to give Rocket the license he needs and uses the Arma 3 engine and we see a finished product from that, don't get me wrong I quite happily carry on playing the game on the current engine if that's where they finnaly decide to take their end product but I think it would be better all around if they gave him the adequate resources and the new engine to create a bigger shinier more indepth DayZ

Maybe you should look on the logs again because the fixes for multiplayer are there just for Dayz and there are no fixies for singleplayer. Before Dayz beta patches didn't came as frequently as they are now and that's because of Dayz. As i said most issues that bata patches fixing are there just for dayz or for overall multiplayer and that also help Dayz.

As far as I can tell, the logs discuss things about weapons and features that don't exist in DayZ, hence many of them can't pertain to DayZ. New beta up btw!
