[Suggestion] Sleep

Recommended Posts

I think it would be really cool if you had to sleep for 5 minutes every couple of hours or every 4 hours.

You could be able to wake up any time and check your surroundings and stuff but you wouldn't get the rest required if you don't sleep for the 5 or whatever minutes straight. This would force the players find a safe spot to sleep and also add to the trust dynamics between others survivors as they could kill you steal things from you while you sleep.

Lets just say I'm running with another survivor and we need to sleep so we get to a safe spot and sleep.

Being able to wake up anytime, my partner wakes up two minutes in and steals all my items or puts a bullet through my head and walks off, he wouldn't get the required sleep cause he didn't sleep the complete 5 minutes required, but he got a bunch of items, or I could wake up while he is looting (because i distrust him and I know he will try it or because he is making loud noises enough for me to hear while i sleep), catch him in the act and all hell would break loose.

Also with the new temperature feature sleeping and keeping warm will increase the risk so other players could see your fire if you decide to sleep in the wild.

It could be even better coupled with my other suggestion about the night and day cycle I think it would make the game much more realistic.

Don't know what other ppl think or if this could be done but I think it would be awesome.

I would like to know what others players think!!

Edit: Sorry. I just saw another suggestion about rest/sleep, sorry for dupe. I did use the search function before posting and missed that one post about sleep doesn't seem to be any other.

anyways my idea differs a bit form the other one so its not a total waste.

Again, sorry

My immediate thoughts are, that this might be realistic yes, but it wouldn't really be fun gameplay-wise. And even if this game aims to be "brutally realistic", it shouldn't be an excuse for something to be stupid.

You really have 2 options: Make a game that is either enjoyable or ultra realistic. You just simply cannot have both. You cannot have an ultra realistic game without some, if not all game mechanics being bothersome and irritating. Making a realistic game is kind of a double-edged sword in that sense.

I think when trying to come up with suggestion for games like this, you need to consider if it's practical or not. Your idea might be awesome and realistic in theory, but when you think about how to implement it in a game, you run into an infinite amount of problems.

Sorry, most of my post became a bit off-topic. I just want people to realize, that there is only so much realism you can implement in a game and still enjoy playing it.

I understand your point of view, but for this mod I personally don't think that having to sleep for 5 or 10 minutes every four hours would be too unpractical or ruin the fun of the game.

and if it does i believe that the possibilities it brings outweigh the irritations it could cause on some players.

And most of all i don't think its stupid, but maybe that's just me

Anyways thx for your comment

No, If I wanted to spend time looking at a black screen, I'd get off the computer and go to sleep.

It's bad enough being forced unconcious by a Zombie bitchslap, and thats only for a minute. Taking my control of a character away for 10 minutes for the sole reason of 'Oh you're a bit tired' is lunacy.

It's bad enough that we all seem to have incredible thirst and fast metabolisms, don't need to add Narcolepsy to the mix.

Im going to steal from this and say what if you could lie down in your tent to get warm? you can already crawl inside the tent so adding the ability to lie down wouldn't be too much to ask, and decrease the amount of time it takes to warm up from 10 mins to like 1 minute.

it could also be used a logout procedure so you lie down and it automatically saves your tent and you in that location.

Nobody realistically sleeps every 4 hours' date=' and I'm not really sure how this would benefit the game - sorry

[/quote']

Nobody realistically eats 15 meals or drinks 70 bottles of water in a 24 hour period nor have the need to light a fire every 1 hour to warm up

And if I was in the situation my dayZ character is I would rather take short naps every couple of hours than sleep 8 hours straight, that would make it less likely for me to get killed

My thinking was that the unease of watching a black screen for 3 or 5 minutes (maybe 10 was a bit too much) hearing your heavy breathing not knowing what is happening around you, you could get killed, get your crap stolen.. IMO its pretty cool

And I thought this mechanic added a lot to the trust and coop features of the game, taking turns to sleep while one companion takes watch, do I trust the guy guarding me while I sleep will he kill me or steal my shit, etc...

But I guess it's just me couse nobody liked it. It's cool it was just a suggestion after all

would a better idea not just be to be able to 'camp' and put your char to sleep when you log out. and in this state his hunger/thirst do not increase. thus allowing you to come back 'rested' and full on food/water not close to death every login!

This is a much better idea than staring at a black screen for ten minutes. The black screen idea is right up there with "30 minute respawn time" in terms of terrible ideas for me.

I actually do like this idea. I would keep the sleeping to 2-3 minutes probably (enough time for me to grab a drink or use the bathroom IRL lol), but I think it would add an interesting dynamic regarding trust and paranoia. It would take some work to really implement it in a fun way, but it's a good idea.

If I wanted to stare at a black screen for five minutes I could just try to log onto a new server.............unless your suggesting we have dreaming added to the game? If so could I suggest ponies, lots and lots of ponies. Better yet, pretend the "Waiting for Server" screen is your character dreaming of a day when they stablise the servers, when your logged in, well thats you waking up isnt it? Phew it was just a nightmare, now back to the zombies and gankers! :D

I would suggest you add a feature to your person where if you post you add something useful to the thread and if you are unable to do that you don't post at all.

No. You know all those hours every day you AREN'T playing DayZ? Use them to pretend your survivor is sleeping. Same thing.

A sleeping mechanic would be boring. Again, the game tries to be 'realistic' but it isn't really. It simulates realism. Morphine doesn't cure broken bones. Sleeping is an unnecessary element of realism to add because it is the opposite of gameplay.

Sure, it might make you find shelter, but there are already mechanics in the game that often force you to find shelter. I get that it could also add an element of risk while you are sleeping (as other players could sneak up and pop you), but this risk largely already exists every time you open your gear menu.

You know what else would be cool, if your character had to poop every few hours, so you had to go dig a hole in the forest and squat for 10 minutes while your character drops a deuce!

I will say that i dislike the idea of sleeping, because it's already "part" of the game. You log out to go to sleep in real life = you're not playing = "sleeping". So in a sense sleeping is already a part of the game.

I like the tent idea, to get warm. But I do see some changes with the temp code coming soon, because it's obviously not a real world wonder that after an hour in the sunlight I will freeze to death.

+1 to tent entering to heat up

-1 to sleeping because we already do that in real life.

I thought it was pretty much implied that logging out was equal to sleeping, and logging in was equal to waking up.

i think instead all players should be forced to find a safe palce to sleep at roughly 12 midnight and then sleep until 7 am, failure to find somewhere to sleep will cause you to fall asleep through exhaution were you are and then the clock is pseeded up until 7 am. If you didnt find somewhere safe then theres a good chance you will be dead.

warning messages appear as midnight aporaches starting with you are getting drowsy and continue in severity until midnight.

i think 2-3 hours of night time is fine but the current amount is just to much to make the game fun and its unrealistic to never have to sleep.

Do you play the game 24/7? No? As others have already said, logging out is pretty much tantamount to your character sleeping.

Having set sleep curfews is just dumb. Sorry but everyone has different sleep schedules and there's no reason why there wouldn't be some survivors that would choose to sleep during the day so that they could sneak around more easily at night.
