Server admins stealing GUIDs for spoofing

We've had at least two of our regular players get their GUIDs stolen and attempted to be used on our servers by hackers. I'm happy to provide the offending IP's of the hackers for permabanning, but I'm concerned about the GUID spoofing issue. Its trivial to collect them from RCon and then edit your registry.

Hopefully this will be addressed sooner rather than later. If paying players leave the game because the hackers outnumber the non-hackers, the project will be stillborn and will go live on a wave of bad press (mostly word of mouth), versus a wave of popularity.

IMHO, hacking is the single most important development issue right now.

You bring up a valid point but the issue is players leaving the game, not whether they are paying for it or not. Addressing the issue of hackers ruining the game should be #1 priority.

Except "hackers" are the extreme fringe minority. The numbers show people are still flocking to the game, not running away from a supposed invasion of hackers.

For every 50 claims of hackers I would bet 40 would be user inexperience, 9 would be legitimate bugs, and 1 would be a malicious hacker. But with as many new players as we have joining, they find a bug or die to inexperience then go on the forums and cry hacker because they assume the game is mostly balanced and bug free.

Everyone has paid for Arma2 OA. This is an indication of likely buyers for Arma3 and DayZ retail.

The only reason to develop anything is to sell it eventually. A free game (i.e. base game + mod) will continue to attract new players, albeit at a slower pace, with hackers ruining the game. A free mod that requires someone to purchase the base game (i.e. DayZ + Arma) will eventually stop attracting new players, or will at a much reduced pace, with hackers ruining the game.

If you think its not about the money, you're fooling yourself.

Two words: adoption curve. The worst possible situation is for hours of development to be poored into getting this built and/or ported, only to find yourself on the downside of the curve.

You payed for a HUGE game that has its own single player game and multiplayer access. If you bought it to play a mod then that's your own problem when the mod doesn't meet your expectations. Rocket and BIS don't owe you anything

Your registry holds your cd key not your GUID, adding a GUID to your registry will do nothing other than throw an invalid cd key error.

How its done is immaterial. The only way they could show up on my server with GUIDs from my players is to pick them up through the console/server log on another server.

Keygen or else your suggesting they have a way to extract a cd key from a hashed GUID which would be a first and would be worth speaking to BI about not Dayz as it would be a whole greater issue.

true, but these hacking issues exist within the structure of ARMA do they not?

it is that structure which is failing. yes, the hackers have been brought here by the popularity of the mod to ruin it for everyone, they are just as threatening to the core game of ARMA as they are to dayZ, i don't think it is illegitimate to desire a fix for hacking

They are working on the problems what else you guys want? Instant Gratification if it's not done within your time period. Alpha mod, couple months old, give it some time.

Bullshit response tbh

Arma 2 is not an alpha, and is definately older than a couple of months, same applies to BE.

Arma 2 + BE = GUID, if hackers are spoofing them (and some hackers on certain websites are indeed claiming this to be true), then BIS and BE need to do something about it ASAP.

the mod is in alpha

battleye is not in alpha

rocket did not state that he will add a mod-side anti-cheat so no, they are not working on hacking issues. they're relying on battleye, which is doing a terrible job as you may have noticed. No statements from BE about addressing this either...

First of all. No they didnt. Alot of people got on the Arma 2 Train before DayZ came out and many are trying Arma2 out and enjoying it because they purchased it becase a mod simply happened to be on this engine.

Rocket may be employed at the moment by BIS, and there may be a lot of outpouring of support for it from BIS, but this is NOT a BIS Project. They have people working on this regularly and are working on fixes for the game, taking time away from Arma 3 Development, as well as the many iterations of their engines, including large government contracts around Viritual Battlefield Simulator 2.

Due to its origins as a Battlefield Simulator used by soldiers, and professionals who have no inclination to hack, nor the need to, the engine has started and still remains to be very trusting. Yes, this needs to be fixed, who's gonna pay for the new employees? whos gonna support new development cycles for something that very well could be fad? Software development is expensive and while you all imagine piles of money and alot of lazy employees sitting around with their hands up their collective asses, these guys are working on an entirely new iteration of the engine DayZ is built on, fine tuning it and making it as good as possible for commercial release.

You paid for a game to get a mod, there are crappy aspects to that game due to hackers, this will be fixed? When? Maybe not today, maybe not tommorrow, but sometime. Until then keep providing valuable feedback to the development team, and stop demanding something because you paid money.

You got what you paid for, a fully working battlefield simulator with a few bugs. It just so happens DayZ runs on it too.

There are several reasons I could debate with this.

Arma 2 & Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead both require money in order to be played. (Unless of course pirating, but whatever), and let's be honest, DayZ is the only reason Arma 2 Combined Operations was the top seller nearly throughout the entire Steam Summer Sale.

DayZ Servers costs money.

This is incorrect, the term everyone seems to be skirting around is "Point of Sale". It's a pretty common legal coin and it widely used in fair trading. If there was no DayZ, many people would never have bought Arma II OA. Don't hide behind the free status of the mod, that's a privilege reserved for the DayZ development team, seeing as they are the only people really doing the something for nothing approach currently.

Dayz servers are not provided by the Dayz team, so many people are paying for you to play DayZ. This point was brought up already, however.

Although you're incorrect, I agree.

Rocket doesn't owe admins/players anything, BIS does. GUID is also used in Arma II and Battle eye also is tasked with correcting problems like this. Perhaps this thread would be better suited if it was posted their way.

@Imperator: I'm inclined to agree.

It's a good idea to consider that DayZ related ARMA II OA sales would be a decent source of revenue, which is why battle eye is under the whip to crack down on these issues.

While the true purpose of ARMA II doesn't encompass this kind of issue, they sold it as a game, this is an ARMA II issue and it's common in gaming. I'm sure hacking in Arma II was present, it was just not as rampant and when your budy is walking around decked out like a mofo, you tend to not look a gift horse in the mouth.

He is talking abount DayZ that is in beta not friking Arma 2 . think the game was out a few yers ago so if it was still in alpha i think we would have a huge probleme.
