CHOSENMARINE 43 Posted July 21, 2012 You sound like a smart player, especially for being a n00b. There's something you should now about Dayz though. The average Dayz person you encounter will be the weirdest, stupidest person you ever met (this is assuming you are on the coast though). A lot of player contact you'll have will end up with yourself being shot and you have no idea how, or even where he was.I once met a guy on the coast in the Electro fire hall. He wasn't talking at all and he seemed like a sketchy character. At the time I was definitely packin'. I had a gillie suit and a DMR, with other goodies. Any ways, He took his hatchet out so I assumed he was friendly. After trying to make contact A LOT, he just went off and started looting like I wasn't even their. Then out of nowhere I hear him say "hello". I was glad to hear him speak and walked face to face with him. I told him I could hear him, and I wanted to know if he would like to trade. After starring at me for along time, he began attacking me with his hatchet! I wasn't expecting this, and for some reason I though I needed to switch to my pistol to shoot him. By the time I got it out and fired on him a few times, we both died!Never trust people EVER. Especially if they aren't speaking!
CHOSENMARINE 43 Posted July 21, 2012 Another good thing to keep in mind, consider where you are on the map and the situation. I treat unarmed people on the coast way differently then someone I come face to face with in the barracks. At the barracks I , unfortunately, shoot on sight if I have a good shot and everything. But that's not the kind of player I usually am. Usually I try and help people out, or avoid them. I have been shot on sight for no reason at all enough times to know how much it sucks, so I try not to do it.
Alpo 38 Posted July 21, 2012 I avoid other players like the plague. I play solo for the most part, and luckily I have acquired an L85A2 AWS along with an AS50 recently. It really helps my game-plan which is to stay completely stealthy and hidden from others as long and as best as I can. So far I have gotten quiet good at it and I cannot wait until I finally luck-box into a ghillie-suit. But I don't even know if that thing is still in the game.Whenever I detect another player I hide as best as I can but always keep an eye on his positioning and if he has detected me or is about to. Unfortunately for him I will light him up the second I think he sees me. I usually blame it on myself for not being careful enough when I have to kill another player and generally feel bad about it unless I can previously confirm that he is a bandit or ambushing people. The only people that get a pass from me are guys without weapons, and the unlucky chaps with broken legs. So basically yes I shoot on sight. But only if he somehow manages to see me. I have to do this. It is the only way I can survive. Talking to strangers over mic is not an option anymore for me - unfortunately, I have to say.
Fishmitts 65 Posted July 21, 2012 Why are some of you so helpful to people who do nothing but complain? Fuck it. I'll start a thread about it.
Alpo 38 Posted July 21, 2012 (edited) Why are some of you so helpful to people who do nothing but complain? Fuck it. I'll start a thread about it.Hey you are absolutely free and encouraged to open a new thread if you feel the topic deserves it. But remember, sometimes people write helpful answers in reply to a random post and it may not always be directed at the opening post. subjectx 7 Posted July 24, 2012 Well, I tried to be nice and not be a trigger happy idiot, but once you see all others shooting you in a back, hopping servers, altf4ing, lying about being friendly and such, you have to adopt to that style, otherwise you just gonna be on coast all the time.. HanoverFist 64 Posted July 24, 2012 (edited) All players in this game are wolves, if your in the pack you're golden if your not you're food.Be skeptical of every player based situation.Trust no one. If someone even utters something that can be construed as a threat, tries to make you jump through hoops or intimidates you in any way shape or form in game , or even tries to stand to close , shoot them.Because I guarantee you that is what they plan to do to you, so might as well tag them since you're going to die anyway. You can find the rare friendly in game but you'll find the impostors more often than not.Why are some of you so helpful to people who do nothing but complain? Fuck it. I'll start a thread about it.This isn't just the OP asking/reading. He/She only has 6 posts ,this one is in the NEW PLAYER section and it's not like his eleventy billonth complaint. There is a constant influx of new people who don't understand the unwritten rules of this game, you can help them learn or publicly torment them for asking. I mean we are up to what now 800,000 people or so. Plenty of lurkers never post and learn a lot by reading these boards too. I find it's easier to be a dick but more rewarding to be helpful. Maximus the Great 34 Posted July 24, 2012 Been playing this game for about 2 weeks and besides my group I have met only ONE friendly Survivior. We traded loot, we raided a town together, and to my suprise when we parted ways...I diidnt receive a bullet to the ass cheek.Besides that, it's been KOS. mad_orbitz 5 Posted July 24, 2012 I have came to learn to not trust anyone no matter what. I shoot anyone I do no know, I play with my two buddies I know in real life and we do not take any chances. I can tell between a newb player and a well equipped player by how they react to other players. Most new players will not try to harm you because they are are usually not armed. My tip to new players would be shoot first ask questions later. I had a guy run past me in cherno and he had a M249 and he opened fire on me once he got in the sniper building. I saw him later on the roof trying to get to the highest point and I shot him. Thank god he was a bad shot.
JESUSARIUS REX (DayZ) 163 Posted July 24, 2012 Honestly, that sounds like pretty understandable behavior in a survival situation. Bandits group up, find a lone guy in the hills. Wants their stuff but can't be for sure he has buddies or that he'll hit at that range. Lure said victim in tent and shoot point blank, not revealing the other 3 guys in his group. If they did just take all your stuff and let you go, you could go find your friend and tell them where they are and how many there are, and what weapons they have. Not everyone is going to want to be happy friends that hold hands and skip through fields of zombie corpses. It's a fight for survival, against zeds, and against other people as well.first of all most people use skype or teamspeak so dieing has nothing to do with getting your friends. if I got killed my two marksmen and 3 riflemen would rain down hell from the mountains. mcBain_101 25 Posted July 24, 2012 im pritty much forced to KOS because my chat/VOIP doesnt work...so if some1 is screaming friendly at me im not gunna kno -.- thts not necessarily a bad thing though :P stary is an extremely hazadous place to be around and should be treated like NW airfield....shoot first and ask questions later, always. i was hanging round stary earlier when i massive firefight broke out between 2 groups of about 6 people...went on for a good 10 mins. i just sat and watched with my m24 :P
hazrauken 0 Posted July 24, 2012 My advise for starting out may be very controversial and earn me a bad name but idgaf:1.) find a REGULAR or RECRUIT server with approx 12 people or less, 4 is too few genrally.2.) try to find the low populated server at around 2-4am server time so it is not 100% pitch black but very dark(enough that you cant make out zeds)3.) turn gamma and brightness all the way up, since this has been patched hard all it means is you will be able to if you lucky is see the zeds from 15m away but humans and such are still too dark(no bleached white exposed skin)This means that Zeds will not se you crouch running normally from 10m away or full running at 20m-ish as long as you are not on a road4.) head to chernos and get to the tents, if you are careful you can make sure no one is there. no one should be there due to low population so you should be ok.5.) go to the military tents first and find a wep and ammo6.) head to medical tents and get bandages, morphine, painkillers, antibiotics(somtimes) etc.if you are really lucky there will be a compass/map/hunting knife/binosgood luck. Charlotte (DayZ) 6 Posted July 24, 2012 When you're approaching a town, keep a look out for zombies. You don't spawn them until you get somewhat close. If you see zombies from far away, you know that another player is there or was very recently there. And always assume they are not friendly.Look for snipers- if there are no zombies, you probably don't have to worry about the big, red building (Stary). Check the hills (zoom in or run around them carefully). Pay close attention to dead animals, rocks, bushes, trees, etc. Eventually, you'll actually learn the popular sniping spots. If you find a sniper in the hills, it's pretty easy to come up behind him.If you choose to go into town anyway, turn your music down and turn effects up, then listen for gunfire. You'll have a pretty good idea of where the other player is once you get to know the town and hear his gunfire. Then you know... avoid the player or hunt him down or whatever. Move quickly, stay in cover, etc etc.
Deftallica 0 Posted July 24, 2012 The unfortunate part to this mod is that you just can't trust anyone. I would prefer to team up and travel with strangers I meet as well, trade gear, etc, but the fact of the matter is 90% of the people you're going to meet just want your stuff. Most of them shoot first, but some prefer to lure players in to a situation where they have the upper hand like this guy did to you. This behavior pretty much forces you to shift to their mentality as well, unfortunately, if you want to stay alive longer. The sad part to this is you may meet someone who would've happily helped you, or one of the traveling medic players and you shoot them on sight. Monster's signature is spot on. "In a world full of monsters, one must become a monster to survive."There's plenty of clans recruiting, you can try one of those. I thought about it, but some of them treat it as though you're interviewing for a job when all you want to do is play a game with like-minded people.

herrjon 478 Posted July 25, 2012 first of all most people use skype or teamspeak so dieing has nothing to do with getting your friends. if I got killed my two marksmen and 3 riflemen would rain down hell from the mountains.I was more saying this is logical behavior IRL, since OP's intial reaction was "Bandits kill for no reason". In game however, sure your mates can be with you or nearby, but if you get killed, you still need to treck all the way back up to Stary, with no supplies. That's plenty of time for them to move or set up a trap.
