vulfy 55 Posted July 18, 2012 If a player has to maintain himself by eating, drinking, bandaging, and fighting cold, why our weapons are behaving like they have been serviced and cleaned by professional gunsmith?I can understand military hardware should be in decent shape, but the stuff we find in the barns, and deer stands should be in worse condition, if working at all.My proposal is to add a gun cleaning / maintenance kit, that you have to find, just like a toolbox. It would allow you to clean and fix your gun. The found guns should have a service interval. Some guns would be in worst shape than others. Jams, misfires and maybe even an occasional injury inducing blow-back would be a great incentive to find the cleaning kit. As you fire your gun, drag it through mud and rain, it accumulates grime and is less and less reliable to fire. So next time you are gulping down beans and washing it down with the coke in a quiet spot, take a look at your gun, it might need some love too.
Dancing.Russian.Man 1631 Posted July 18, 2012 Sounds like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. to me. The condition part, not the maintenance.+1.

con7act 29 Posted July 18, 2012 (edited) One of the first questions that someone asked when i introduced her to DayZ was, if the guns have to be maintained. After telling her, "no you dont have to, once you find them, they work forever", i realised how disapointed i was about my own answer, and how interessting and much more personell it would be, if had to take care over the object, that takes care of me, without ever wanting something back.If i would sit in the forest in the rain, cleaning my gun before i enter the next village, it would make me attached to my rifle even more.I love this idea, because its actually very importent, and it fills some time when you would do nothing. killashrub324815@gmail.com 18 Posted July 18, 2012 +1 from me. Cleaning a rifle is half the job of shooting one.

Mostly because i'd rather not have my gun jam or break in mid condition while i'm trying to save my life against a zombie or another player in pvp.
Rogan (DayZ) 24 Posted July 18, 2012 A jam on a reasonably well maintained weapon should take seconds to clear.
Rexonator99 0 Posted July 18, 2012 It would be fun to assign a person in charge of weapon maintenance in a group, For example: (Sort of a bad one) Lets say you clear an area of a town and there is a rusty, weather beaten weapon that you want to repair, you could take it to your maintenance man for repairs while you clear some more of the town and loot. I'm guessing this will be sort of Fallout style, except for the fact that you repair it yourself. (?) Good suggestion.
gant12000 4 Posted July 18, 2012 i think this would add an interesting mechanic to the game. a gun that is high maintenance should need to be cleaned i think after use alot, especially certain high damage sniper rifles. other guns i dont think should do this, simply because it would overwhelm the player with too much resource management. it turns into searching for food, water, shelter, ammunition, various other supplies to keep all my guns working as well. OrLoK 16182 Posted July 18, 2012 Hello thereAlthough an interesting idea, unfortunately in games that support mechanics like, this the time period to have a weapon in working condition always seems to be incredibly short. One min I have a fully cleaned weapon, the next I have a rusty unuseable paperweight. Also, we have to remember that weapons can perform beyond their recommended cleaning times.Lastly it would make an interesting dynamic as those weapons which have less parts and/or are rugged enough to last a decent amount of time without maintenance would suddenly be in demand over delicate high performance weapons.Id like this if it's properly implemented and doesnt become a chore.RdgsLoK
brandon3443 7 Posted July 18, 2012 1+personally owning a rifle.. i know how much time goes into making sure it works fine.. if its not properly maintained, the sights will be off, missfires, the gun jams... things that would really piss you off when you need it most... it would add an extra level of caring for the gear you have, and would add to the already immense gameplay what really made me start playing this game was how realistic it was... and adding to that would just make it better :3
Jenga22 22 Posted July 18, 2012 i love this idea, the only problem i could think of is, we already have many things we need to do and we struggle to survive as it is, maybe condition of the guns and repairing but jamming would be really annoying, you need to screw over a load of zombies and your gun jams your screwed, but id like to see what rocket does to this idea... +1 from me
Zeromentor 169 Posted July 18, 2012 Sure, in real life many shooters clean their weapons, but the amount of rounds between each cleaning is very different. Some fire off only a hundred rounds, others fire 400.Even for guns like the M16, people generally either clean it every single time they get done firing at a range (so 200 or so rounds) or after a certain amount. And even that is usually preventive maintenance, not full cleaning. How many times have you fired 200 rounds in a gun before you died? Personally, I have never gone through even 5 magazines in a gun before I either switch it out or die. And that is at most 150 rounds. I doubt they'd be rusted piles of crap by then. Sure the idea to maintain your weapons ingame makes sense, but outside of clans keeping their weapons for weeks, running on raids and recollecting them if someone dies, most players won't fire 500 rounds before they die, much less 500 rounds through one gun.So it would be rather pointless to code all that in to this game, if it isn't in the engine already. I wouldn't mind all that much unless it is something unrealistic, like being forced to clean my M1911 after every few zombies or else I get stove-piped every other bullet, then such an addition would make me furious. Ribano 46 Posted July 18, 2012 sounds awesome to me +1 however i'd make all handguns and shotguns and lee enfield exempt.gun cleaning should be a mid-end game thing for people with the ability and resources to worry about these things.making the cleaning equipment spawn in industrial locations would also stop all new players from running to the nearest deer stand as the gun will probably seize up before they find the cleaning equipment :)

Denkkraft 4 Posted July 18, 2012 or like in jagged alliance 2 where weapons degreade with every use and if u find a second weapon u can combine them to one good working one, gives a reason to keep looking for more military weapons even though u have one already
ollox 38 Posted July 18, 2012 Some people are saying this would only affect those who stay alive long enough. Well... yeah and that's a good thing! It adds another level of challenge for long-term survivors. I don't know enough about guns to comment on what would damage it or how long it would take to degrade enough to require repair, but general cleaning and maintenance certainly seems logical. Lady Kyrah 1110 Posted July 18, 2012 I think weapon condition would be a good thing. As it is right now, weapons go from player to player, never break or degrade. Which means the rarer equipments keep recycling and rarely leave the item pool.Without weapon degradation it doesn't matter if a gun has only a tiny percentage of drop chance. Once it drops, it's very unlikely that it will ever leave the item pool. There is no incentive to look for a replacement weapon ever.
