New sense: Smell?

So the zombies currently have sight and hearing. Their hearing a tad bit stronger than their sight, but we all know that.

What about a smell feature?

1. When you spawn in [or respawn, so essentially it's a fresh spawn], your character is not affected by smell [so they are "clean"].

2. After running for a while, your character starts to smell [so it would be good if you could have another "meter", like the recently added visual one to tell you the level of how bad you smell]

3. So the more you smell, the more zombies will be attracted to the smell [of course there would have to be a distance before they are oblivious to the smell]

4. You could clean yourself by using water/pepsi/coke.

It's not a tough thing to manage, because of how easy it is to find drinks. But it just adds that bit more realism.

Clean yourself with pepsi/coke? I do not understand that... reminds me of a movie about america in the future, they will water their plants with "gatorade" a similiar drink to coke, will they shower in it now also ;D?

Not a terrible idea but rather than using water bottle, pepsi and coke to clean yourself it would be more realistic to jump in a pond or in the shore or have an animation near a well to clean yourself.

Not a bad idea but would be another pain in my ass. I find that the number 1 reason for deaths right (for non-bandits and alike) is starvation and dehydration.

Smell only has a couple of meters of 'function' and the human nose isn't realy set up to track any smells, if we add zombie dogs though, the thing becomes a lot different. I think in comparison, where a human as about a postage stamp of smellcells a dog has about a footballfield.

And for dogs it doesn't realy matter if you smell like poo or like rozes, they can smell good enough to follow the trail of skincells you loose as you go ... perhaps if the odour printer was released it be a good feature, but more in a sense that it be rather 'social' to wash yourself every now and then :P

But I will say that I too would like to see this feature tested in the future.

It should take a considerable amount of days before your character's smell starts to attract zombies however (just from running around / not bathing).

Stuff that could add to your scent meter:

- Looting a player's corpse

- Looting a player's corpse you recently murdered (additional)

- Hiding a player's corpse

- carrying meat/cooked meat

- bleeding

Like the idea for scent

BUT

My vote goes for crawlers only for scent tracing, and that they never give up, unless you cross water or it starts raining. (yeah, I sort of miss the old Z´s that never gave up, I had my own personal jumper once, following me until I starved to death)

Uh, I don't think this would be a good implication to the game. Think about it the zombies sense of smell will be no better than ours. They would be walking around reeking of their own stench. They wouldn't be able to smell past themselves. If this gets put it they should just put it taking shits and taking pisses.

Smell has no need and will put a burden unnecessary as ear and eyes have a realistic range longer than our smell.

You'll need a new thing to trigger the smell sense of infected and this thing, you'll want it to appear on the GUI.

You'll need some way to influence this things.

The last but not the least, infected are rotting gradualy, so their smell will have no use because they will stink harder than you'll do.

I love this. Kind of gives a small penalty for pking. An understandable, realistic, slight penalty.

But its in every zombie movie, pretty much, lol. One could also argue their senses be dulled due to the rotting, but it seems that in some movies their senses are even heightened.

i like the corpse and meat idea, as their smell can travel far. but im not sure the same would go for blood...

But they would normally have gotten used to their own smell, thus when something that doesn't smell bloody horrible comes by they can tell that it isn't a zombie [of course they can't actually TELL, but you know what I mean]

This. Though make buckets random spawn at some barns for cleaning.

Or possibly just add in a new item? Deoderant maybe? And another thought... Zombie with a blown off nose smells you.... Fuck logic

I like the fact that Zombies can smell the flesh they hunting. the player have better eyes, hearing is simular, zombies can smell. effect you have on gameplay: the zeds react if a player is in a distance, they go slowley in the player direction until they can locate him with ears or eyes. than they go crazy. so the player must keep on movin and stay out of sight. it could be just a way to let the zombies moving arround more better.
