moofactory 62 Posted July 16, 2012 We all know at some point in the future with all rockets intentions, this mod will be a stand alone game. What we also know is he wants to look at 500km maps and use the arma 3 source. So what does this mean for the future setting? Why were we in Russia to begin with?I think we are in Russia now because that's the map rocket chose to use as most appropriate available. What if he was given a choice for the setting?Where would we be?I think either we get dropped into what ever large map rocket uses available out of arma 3 which means we could be anywhere in the world.Or he chooses a setting and builds it from the ground up.Me personally, id like to see it set in some place with a more varied landscape. Rainforest, snowcapped mountains, swamps, rivers, farmland, small towns, and a city with skyscrapers.Perhaps part of nz :PWhere would you like to see the standalone game set? copper2010 6 Posted July 16, 2012 I would like it to be in the U.S. But rocket can't create his own map for dayz (at least I don't think so).
BlazeN'Chronic 51 Posted July 16, 2012 I would like it to be in the U.S. But rocket can't create his own map for dayz (at least I don't think so).How do you know what rocket can or cant do?
Hetstaine 10852 Posted July 16, 2012 I like the current map style , it has a fair bit of variety but yes , huge mountain ranges and big cities that make Cherno look like a suburb would be awesome. Long as he doesnt pick a desert map ;)
sixbarns 217 Posted July 16, 2012 I'd like it to be set in a place similar to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado but that's just me.
copper2010 6 Posted July 16, 2012 How do you know what rocket can or cant do?Maps are very hard to make, ecspeicaly arma 2 maps since they are so big. Making a map the size of the one we use now would take FOREVER and prohibet progress of the mod itself. Also, my spelling is horrible...
jasonmcmackins@gmail.com 24 Posted July 16, 2012 Personally, I thought the Russian map was a game enhancement. I don't speak nor read even the tiniest bit of Russian so trying to figure out where in the hell I was added to the atmosphere. So where would I like to see the next one? South America maybe. Somewhere third world. Definitely no major populated area or no major modern built up area. You need to be able to explain the supplies or lack there of. I know a lot of the movies and stories are set in America, but a Zombie plague would die out too fast here. Specially in the southern regions. Just way toooooooooooo many guns for that kinda shenanigans to last long. In my house alone there's four pistols, three hunting rifles, and four shotguns with a minimum of two boxes of ammo for each. That's just the way it is here.
G0V3RNM3NT4L 132 Posted July 16, 2012 The Russian fits with the theme... American washed up on a distant shore after a boat crash...
thefreindlyoldman 47 Posted July 16, 2012 I would love to see a map that was set in a GIANT city like New York if this was to become stand-alone, it would be so much more intense if it was urban warfare and zombies everywhere.
Momiji 46 Posted July 16, 2012 I like the Russian setting, Day Z has actually given me some sembelance of map reading and orienteering skills just from being at a pond and looking around and saying "Oh i'm not to far from Stary".Chernarus is a great map, nice ranges, forests, fields and towns plus the cities and it all looks like it's been in the zombie apocalypse for a good while with all the rust and decay on buildings. Ywain 16 Posted July 16, 2012 Antarctica would be a pretty cool setting.
Azrail (DayZ) 211 Posted July 16, 2012 i want chernarusbut 1000x the size so i can run in the same direction for dayz and never reach the end of the world.
Whattteva 32 Posted July 16, 2012 (edited) Antarctica would be a pretty cool setting.Would be totally unrealistic. The Antarctica is a very harsh environment. The average man would probably perish within a few hours there. There's a reason why it's been uninhabited for most of history.I personally like the Russian setting. It's the few times where my 3 semesters of Russian language in college are actually paying off, lol. Edited July 16, 2012 by Whattteva
jovial 17 Posted July 16, 2012 (edited) I like Chernarus. But if its gonna be a much bigger map, a snowy area would be nice. Not Antarctica though. It would be enough to just have a area where you had to watch your temperature constantly, as well as zombies and bandits. Also would give a reason for a white camo suit, and not making the ghillie suit the ultimate stealth tool. Edited July 16, 2012 by jovial
evulclown@gmail.com 191 Posted July 16, 2012 (edited) Pretty happy with the current setting. These sort of forests scream "survivalist" to me, it's rugged. If it was loads larger and has some mountain ranges / snow / a big city too I really would not be upset. I really hope it won't be the greek island, that would be horrendous, the landscape is a shambles. Desert too...Canada could be cool Edited July 16, 2012 by itputsthelotion
Thingyy 5 Posted July 16, 2012 Where's Churno? :D
chilled 17 Posted July 16, 2012 Holland. Perfect to snipe zombies, also bicycles.
moofactory 62 Posted July 16, 2012 I do see the current map as a little nostalgic and possibly will be rebuilt..At the least, a russian location as a reminder of where it all began. Its just as likely.Northern Russia is one of the biggest landmasses in the world and most of it looks unpopulated from google earth.
sixbarns 217 Posted July 16, 2012 I'm all for the Russian setting. The terrain is what I'm interested in.
xwhitemousex 67 Posted July 17, 2012 The Chernarus map has pretty much what is (at least my) expectation of an apocalyptic setting. You have large forests, open forests, dense forests. You have hills, mountains, valleys. You have isolated houses, barns, dams, lakes. You have small villages, midsize towns and large cities. The variety is excellent and it's what makes the map so good to play on.I don't want deserts... or jungle... those things sound like something you'd like to have as an option in a map rotation for a wargame like Battlefield.DayZ isn't a wargame (despite the fact it's pretty much a sniper simulator more than a survival game right now). I don't want wargame options for DayZ. I don't want jungles for snipers to hide in any more than I want people to start rolling into Cherno in a T90.What I would like to see is more buildings you can enter, as well as larger main cities and perhaps as many as 3 or 4 of them in order to spread people out some. Right now it's like... I'm bored, let's go to cherno or elektro and snipe people. With more big cities people would be slightly more spread out and new players would have more of a chance to actually come out of it alive rather than being free frags for bored snipers.A survival game though needs the variation between wilderness and civilization. Giving you an option to stay alive in the wild, but the necessity to sometimes go back to civilization to find important things like medical supplies and such. Or try to stay alive within the cities by finding a place to hold up.However, trying to stay alive in the cities isn't much of an option because; 1) There aren't enough buildings to enter, 2) The cities, despite their first impression, aren't big enough, and 3) There are too few "big" cities making too many people pile up in same area constantly.
noobfun 87 Posted July 17, 2012 I like the Russian setting, Day Z has actually given me some sembelance of map reading and orienteering skills just from being at a pond and looking around and saying "Oh i'm not to far from Stary". ..someones hanging out at prud :P water, 2 deer stands, and a cow and starry just a short jog away .. its the perfect apocalypse real estate
giiwedin@live.com 32 Posted July 17, 2012 I would like to see more urban area's more city's different buildings etc maybe an underground train transit system tunnels leading to different train stops. But keep all the wilderness and rural area's aswell!
Miki (DayZ) 15 Posted July 17, 2012 (edited) Honestly, the map in Dead Island combined with Metro. Edited July 17, 2012 by Miki
moofactory 62 Posted July 17, 2012 (edited) I Think it wouldn't hurt to stray away from a realistic setting like replicating part of a real country and instead create a fictional country loosely based on an existing one... taking some creative freedoms for the benefit of the game.I guess the idea is to build on whats already there and resolve problems. When you look at built up areas like towns and the 2 cities. They really are small, regarding scale.Even churno is tiny when you really look at it compared to a real place.Id not call it a city... its a small town with an industrial area, the rest are tiny villages.Id like to see a REAL city. Like a couple of the maps in bF3/COD/CRYSIS3/GTA.And if were talking about good examples of Russian maps... just look at Stalker / COD and METRO.Skyscrapers, unique buildings to that city, a mall , street shops, restaurants, public transport, parks.. everything a city has.And small towns or suburbs like REAL replicas of what an average small town density is like.Google earth maps overlayed onto the editor would be a great way to design a new map regarding layout.
