Windage, adjusting for windage

Recommended Posts

This really slots nicely into the stated philosophy of 'if you're good at this in real life, you're good at it in DayZ'. Presently, in order to shoot at long range, you only need to adjust for elevation. It isn't exactly hard, despite the amount of misinformation I see everywhere regarding ranging with mil dots and such..

Currently, long-range shooting in DayZ is arcade-simple. In real life, long-range shooting is something you need to know how to do before you can actually hit someone at 1200-1600 meters like the most powerful sniper rifles in the game are capable of.

Not only is this a bit disappointing given the detail found in the rest of the game, it is also frustrating for people when they get shot by the people with those sniper rifles. Now, I'm not against banditry at all, or sniping. I am a bandit and a sniper myself.

I do, however, think that it should require more knowledge, more skill, and perhaps even more patience.

Adding windage, and adding the element of having to not only judge the wind speed just like you would in real life, but compensating for it, would bring sniping in DayZ up to the level of real long-range shooting. It would make long-range shooting a hell of a lot more interesting and rewarding, as getting that shot out at 1.6 k's really took you some work.

ArmA II does not support windage at all, however, ACE2 does.

ACE2 is a mod which I know DayZ already loans the occasional feature from. Windage should, in my opinion, also be kindly loaned from ACE2, along with the various items used for windage added to the loot tables and tools section similar to the compass and GPS.

Was just going to post this very suggestion. I think raising the difficulty of using more complex weaponry would stifle the bored bandit syndrome where they take pot shots at fresh spawn - not that this should be the primary reason, Rocket has already said he wants things to represent reality where practical already.

I too would think this would be a good challenge, but the main problem is how you would measure the wind. You are a video game character and as such do not have nerves, I guess a wind speed meter in the hud might suffice but idk if that would fly.

I'd like the challange it would provide as it's way to easy for me to sit 800m away from Elektro and easily hit every shot...

Having to adjust for windage would separate the good "pretend" marksmen from the people who simply have scoped weapons. Which would absolutely cripple sniping for sure (meaning that 90% of the people I encounter in-game are absolutely terrible shooters), which I highly support.

I think the actual implementation of this would be incredibly complex because: if there's wind, and wind will effect your shots, does that mean wind is going to hijack your close range shooting?
