The Winchester 1866 should, realistically, have a MUCH longer reload time

Recommended Posts

I noticed for a while that the Winchester reloads in a good 3-4 second range or whatever. Now realistically, this would be pretty much impossible.

If you know how lever-actions work, they take a considerable time to reload (gotta put one round in at a time)

There is no way you could ever get that all done in 3-4 seconds. No way.

I propose that the winchester's reload time gets tripled. I know that sounds inconvienant, but its just the way the gun works.

Opinions?

Should reload 1 round per second (far more realistic IMO - I also have a lever action, though mine has more of your typical shotgun style loader) which you can interrupt at any time. (not sure if this is doable in the engine though)

ie it takes 15 seconds to reload fully from empty, but if you need to shoot after 5 seconds than you have 5 rounds available to you

I think the Winny loaded from the side of the breech, somewhat like a pump action shotgun, just from the side instead of the bottom . There wasn't any mucking about with unscrewing caps and so on. The reload time is something of a double edged sword, because while it would take a significant amount of time to reload every shell, you could still pop in 3 or 4 at short notice and be good to rock and roll on short notice.

Reloading in general ought to take longer than it does currently. We reload like hardened operators. We should be reloading like bumbling civilians.

I'm pretty sure thats just the hole to put the rounds in

Either way, its still be one round at a time, and you'd need to remove the tube to get that hole open, then put it back in to ensure the rounds aren't bouncing around and/or going into the chamber. No way you could cram 15 rounds in that quickly

Winchester Model 1866

The original Winchester rifle - the Winchester Model 1866 - was famous for its rugged construction and lever-action mechanism that allowed the rifleman to fire a number of shots before having to reload: hence the term "repeating rifle." Nelson King's new improved patent remedied flaws in the Henry rifle by incorporating a loading gate on the side of the frame and integrating a round sealed magazine which was covered by a fore stock. Originally chambered in the rimfire .44 Henry, the Model 1866 was nicknamed the "Yellow Boy" because of its receiver of a bronze alloy called gunmetal.

You do not have to unscrew anything in order to reload it. This is one of the reasons why the gun was so popular.

Zipper is correct. Henrys were basically prototype repeating rifles. Winchester improved on the design so much that Winchester Repeating Rifles are still very accurate and very efficient guns. They just have been overshadowed by modern weapons. The reload time of a Winchester by an experienced wielder is about 7 seconds.

There is a reason why the Winchester is called "The Gun that Won the West".

you also could just load one round and fire but doesn't seem like arma II handles that. there are not really any steps to loading an 1866. you just push cartridges into the gate and cycle the lever. tripling the time sounds about right for a realistic full reload but in reality you could also fire it much faster with practice. If you want to talk realism make the automatic weapons jam with an increasing chance with rounds fired and time passed without cleaning. People would be choosing the 1866 and revolver for reliability!

there are much more pressing issues though

Is that so? Well I'll clean up the OP then

This game is supposed to be realistic although it is still a game. Maybe if you did increase the reload time 3x longer, people would think the gun is worthless hence rendering it unused and just another 'crappy gun'. I think it should stay the way it is. Also this isn't an urgent issue so maybe these things can be looked at in beta?
