Server default/option: disable grass?

Recommended Posts

There should be a server option to disable the grass for all clients (setTerrainGrid 50), since in MP grass has only a "local" fluff effect and a low radius.

When you hide in high grass, the only thing you do is reducing your own view while other players can see you, because that grass around you is not displayed on their clients.

i am +1ing this... or at least make it an option to turn off clientside if possible. that way people that want to play dayz for immersion can have it.

Can we not set it higher so people can see grass in a larger radius?

My thoughts exactly. It kinda ... defeats the point of camo and all that upon a certain distance.

So it should be higher.

ive set min at the lowest possible, the only way to see if a server is running optimum terrain detail... otherwise you are taking cover, when not really taking cover...

I really don't care...I mean, it is annoying when you can't see properly when prone, but I'll still take the immersive effect of sneaking in tall grass. I can just imagine how dull it would be to run across a flat field. If it gives me a disadvantage, then fine. I'll get the advantage some other time when I am the one who spots someone from far away.

well ideally id have it forced serverside if its possible, but only forced if it goes the full 500m or 700m

The point is that the grass consumes quite an amount of ressources. So forcing every client in MP to display grass isn't that good. It's not that dramatical in Takistan, but Chernarus is quite demanding. Forcing grass in a greater radius is even worse. Personally I prefer very high detail setting for textures, antialiasing and such instead of grass.

In my MP maps I always include the server-side option of four grass detail levels (max to disabled). And since it's actually useless, one can spend C/GPU power for other details without having to waste power to grass.

Shadows are also client-side optional and having them disabled can give you an (PvP) advantage over players who have shadows displayed (but that's more the "fault" of those people who activate shadows).

So since the grass is more or less useless in the non-limited and fully-used ranges of Chernarus and since the grass only serves as eye-candy for those who don't want to run across polygon-plains, grass really might be client-side optional. But I suppose this to be a future-patch-matter of the Arma core game. Don't know whether Dayz -although being a total conversion- is potentially able to add that options to the main/graphics menu. CERTAINLY (since I'm scripting and editing) I know for sure, that it can be added by an ingame menu.

Further, the fifty metres of grass radius on lowest detail (yet visible) consume 12+ FPS in comparison to totally disabled grass. So imagine 500+ metres radius, lol.

Personally I do not dislike totally disabled grass. Don't know how to express... has something of a clean and tidy environment.
