Is it possible to change town names from Russian?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious if I can change town/city names from Russian to the names on the in game map. If not, would it be possible to replace said sign textures or would this be frowned apon. I find it difficult to find my loctaion based on the in game map. I don't really want to have my netbook open while I play. So I can have the DayZ wiki map showing me the tranlations of towns/citys I've just passed through.

You should thank the GOD, that the names aren't in Chineese or Arabic. Cyrillic alphabet is very similar to English so after some practice you won't have any problem reading the names.

Arabic would actually be fairly easy to read if they didn't have invisible vowel markings. 3 years of it and it still gives me hell. I understand even native speakers get confused by it. On that topic, I have a buddy who did a tour in Iraq, and he told me he learned what the word for "stop" looked like by remembering that it looked like 2 guys in a canoe. So in a case like this, it's really more about just remembering what the words look like for each town, if you can't read or learn Cyrillic (but you should be able to figure out some of it after a while). Now with Chinese we'd really be screwed.

Changing this would require a mod, which signature would need to be allowed by the servers.

Considering how much Rocket likes how personal knowlegde gives you an edge in games, I don't think this is likely.

To be fair, at first me and my mate would struggle with this, we'd try and pronounce where the hell we were and just confuse each other when it came to finding each other.

In the end we just printed off an A4 sized map that is one of many out there, it has the Cyrillic and English name for each town written on it. Although we're getting familiar with the towns now, to find exactly where we are we look at the signposts at the entrance / exit of each town, read the Cyrillic name and just find it on the map.

The map we use is not much use as its zoomed out, so its like using a road atlas to navigate by, but it shows enough for us to get around fairly easily. Try doing that instead of having your netbook open perhaps?

Back in secondary school I randomly chose to learn Russian instead of more common options like Spanish and German. It seemed like a waste but I now realise it was all to prepare me for navigating my way through Chernarus :D

Lol. The only sentence I ever learned in Arabic was "Stop, Stop or I shoot".
