When to trust people

Recommended Posts

This is the second time something like this has happened to me. A guy with only starting gear comes up to me and salutes me and everything, so i think he is cool. I'm not bandit or anything so i don't think he will do anything to me.

We walk around a small city and pick apart all the loot and everything. He then shoots me when he tells me that i can have some of his ammo and i bend down to get it.

Is the best way just to never trust anyone and stay on your own? I keep trying to help people and get murdered but want to maintain my non bandit status.

if the server has teamspeak or vent you should try getting on there, also if you play on 1 server a lot you can get to know the regulars better

Avoid everyone if possible, there are too many assholes running around.

This is my golden rule! I've been kill enough by sad excuses for human beings. Now I avoid other survivors and I kill bandits on site. Although, I dislike shooting other human players (in this game), but the morons in game force peoples hands.

and that is why they are removing the bandit skin... because of people like you who shoot bandits on sight even if they are friendly :P

So now people will not know who the player killers are? That's a great move...*sigh*, now player killing will increase ten fold. Friendly bandit? LOL... that's good one.

Honestly? I only trust my friends I talk to on Skype. Otherwise I don't go near anyone who approaches me, however I do /help/ people in need.

Well, I'm more trusting than most but when I got gunned down in cold blood just now, everyone's fair game now. I didn't even see this guy, nothing. Was busy looting and I swear he got me through a damn wall or something.

Never trust anyone, get in a clan of some kind and move as a group, your survival odds jump 100 fold and people avoid you instead of the other way around.

For me the ruthlessness of human players is why I enjoy part of the game. I rarely kill a Zomb, only if its too close.

I do like the need to be cautious in towns, I survey the area, check hills and high buildings before sneaking in. I sneak past Zombs but most important I try to stay undetected from humans.

That doesn mean I wont help people. I'm just careful in how, for instance I popped a few Zombs for a guy trapped in a house, but split before he could turn his gun on me.

I can't really bring myself to avoid nonbandit players, usually because I see them first in the dark and let them know so, basically telling them I could blow their ass away if I wanted to. That seems to be an important part of teaming up randomly, letting the person know you had the power to kill them for their beans but didn't. I don't go "DROP YER FUCKING GUN, DUN MOVE" or any of tue crap that a lot of people here do. I just say "Hey, you by that *object*. I see you" and then eventually give them some vauge idea of where I am to extend some trust. It's worked a couple times so far, and it seems to be working. Haven't been betrayed yet, but one of these days that trust is going to come back to bite me in the ass. I just haven't run into any complete dicks yet.

Of course, I don't really care about dying in a game where it takes a few bullets to kill and the starting equipment is pretty damn effective and generous, so there's that. I also don't go to high end equipment areas, mostly sticking to rural houses for cheap equipment, so the loss is minimal when I die. Too many people take this game waaaay too seriously.

I'd say never trust anyone you don't know irl. I only trust my friend that i role with when we're in Teamspeak.(Yeah yeah yeah I know... "People still use teamspeak?" You all suck. =P)

It's OK to work with other people, I do it all the time. But I'll never take my eyes off of them. Even if we agro a town or take fire from bandits, either myself or my friend on TS are always watching whoever we pick up in our group and we'll split off on our own if we think we're not safe but don't experience anything outwardly hostile.

A couple of things to remember...

*All of these points are things to remember when dealing with players you don't know.

*Other players don't tolerate you aiming at them. That includes pistols so aim away if you don't want to get ventilated.

*Don't keep standing behind a player that doesn't trust you.

*Don't stand close to a player that doesn't trust you. You can look into other players' backpacks and steal from them so stay out if you don't want people to think you're a thief.

*Watch chat and respond whenever spoken to from someone in your group.

I had a positive encounter with strangers today.

I heard some gunfire nearby, so I went up on a hill to look down a factory where someone was shooting zombies. The factory entrances had been blocked by wire fence. Another person joined him and they were figuring out a way to get in (in chat). I was on a hill couple hundred meters away looking down through the scope of my CZ 550, and I noticed neither of them was using bandit skins, so I made them an offer:

If one of them gives me their revolver, I'll go down to give him a makarov and use my toolbox to remove the wire fence so they can loot the factory. After a while one of them agreed. This is where trust comes in. I walked down to them with gun lowered. We all saluted each other as sign of friendliness, and he placed the revolver+ammo on ground. I picked it up, gave him makarov+ammo. The most nervous moment was when I had to turn my back on them while removing the two wire fences blocking the entrance. They could had shot me with easy 1 bullet in head and taken the revolver + other stuff that I had. They didn't.

This time trusting the strangers payed off for everyone, as it turned out to be good deal for all of us. They found their own toolboxes and other good loot inside, and I got the revolver I had been looking for. One reason I could put my trust on them was the fact that they did not have bandit skins on. When dayZ version 1.5.8 comes out and bandit skins are removed, I'll have to treat everyone as potential bandit so this kind of scenario is very unlikely to happen anymore. :(

Unlike everyone else I havent been killed by a player a single time, I have only been shot at one time.

I am trying to team up with other players and I have had a few smaller cooperations with unknown players(however there was one guy I didnt really trust, he aimed at me pretty often and didnt seem to want to work together.)

If you want to play this game "seriously" .. you need a clan (and so time.. and so probably you're a person with (much?) time.. mostly young). If you're a casual player you're "forced" to shoot anyone (before they shot at you..). You can't avoid it, it is a fact.. you can be lucky to find a friendly person one time.. two times maybe.. but then you'll find the noob, just logged in, that will shot you no matter, coz he just played BF3 or CoD 5 minutes before, and he read about how cool DayZ is on a gaming forum.

With the bandit skin removal it will be even worse.. there'll be serious players and clans, and there'll play death-players. Sadly the death-match ones will be the majority (coz the hardcores are here on this forum, bue there's thousands others out there..).

As the lonewolf i am, when i'm not in teamspeak i will have to decide wether it's worth killing someone or if the risk is too great when i spot someone. Do i have good gear? What do they have? Does he have friends with him? Am i in a good spot? Do i have an escape route planned? All these factors.

When someone else spots me and asks if i'm friendly i'll usually team up. However, i will keep my eyes on them and let them take the lead.

You can say i have my mood changes. I'm usually out in the countryside, avoiding the big cities altogether. As a general rule, i don't trust anyone when heading inland. But so far i've never had a moment where i shot someone in the back.

People killing others on sight are missing out on a huge part of the game. I always team up with strangers and it has made for some interesting experiences so far. The assumption that every stranger is a back-stabbing, trigger-happy rat is absolutely untrue. I'm still as paranoid as ever but people see the benefits of traveling in packs. The fear that somehow Cod kiddies got their hands on an arma2 mod is slim to none and even then, they'd get bored quickly because it isn't your typical shooter.

If by, "Huge part of the game" you mean the "YOU DIED" screen, then I suppose you are right. I am totally missing out.

I will never understand how people think putting their lives in OTHER PEOPLE'S hands equates to survival. I will team up with friends and that is it.

I always trust players unless they are shooting at me or in a Bandit skin.

That's my play-style and I enjoy it. I'd rather have a temporary friend in-game for a few minutes or a few hours than I would an extra can of beans.

I've never gotten killed by back stabbers, always bandits in the distance that let me knew they weren't friendly by trying to shoot me. I can't think of one memorable moment that didn't involve random strangers. Now I don't have anything against playing with friends but a huge part of my enjoyment is not knowing what I'm getting myself into.

I know exactly what I am getting into, because out of the 6 times I tried teaming up, 100% of the time I was shot in the back. There is no mystery involved like you are implying... It is just a guaranteed death as far as I am concerned.

I have lived significantly longer by just killing anyone I see.

Never trust anyone or anything;

1st character - spawn, find zombie, die => never trust zees

2nd character - spawn, find ladder, die => never trust ladders

3rd character - spawn, find good weapon, bandit behind me, die => never trust bandits

4th character - spawn, find good weapon in power plant, go back down to bottom, can't leave cause zees outside, see another player spawning (friendly skin) decide not to shoot and can't avoid contact so say "hi, friendly?", he turns around and shoots me in the face, die => never trust players

Well I've been lucky that I havent been killed by another survivor or bandit, just died by z's and ladders :). I generally avoid other people at all costs. Don't want to take the risk of getting backstabbed lol. I've only seen 3 other survivors and no bandits mind you. I tend to stay away from the center of towns and cities and scavange the outskirts of them. Been working ok so far:)
