Alternative food sources

Recommended Posts

I was thinking yesterday, as I was travelling through the woods in-game that being able to pick berries, apples etc. would be a nice addition to the game. Also, having harvest-able veggies in some gardens would be great.

I agree forests should harbor tons of berries and mushrooms, most being poisonous and killing you, this would require from a player to learn either by trial and error, or from another player what is safe to eat.

Good idea.

Thera are chicken houses in towns - find eggs?

Also bee-hive structures near sime houses - find honey?

I agree with this idea. I've even been thinking about it myself. (But obviously haven't made a thread about it.)

Berries should be a very weak but easily found source of food -AND- water, refilling a tiny bit of both when consumed.

And there are pumpkins in some backyards. At first I thought they were harvestable, but apparently not.

I'd imagine it would require a knife to carve/prepare it.

I think the number and variety of wildlife could be increased as well. Deer (that's what the deer stands are for!), bears (kinda ties in with bear traps) etc. But emphasizing the survival aspects of play definitely holds some huge potential in my opinion. Good idea OP.

I was thinking the exact same thing just now as I wandered the forest. Good thing I looked first before posting my own thread! But yeah, I think you should be able to harvest berries and roots and mushrooms, and yeah, the damn huge pumpkins that everyone seems to grow in their gardens. I like the idea of modeling the berries and other things after real world plants, so you would have to learn IRL which are poisonous and not in order to safely harvest them.

More wildlife would be great too, like zombies being the big threat in the towns, and wolves and bears in the forests. But the forests should not be FREE of zombies as they are now, they need to have wandering packs of zeds just ambling around the forests looking for fresh meat, not everywhere, but enough to not be able to full sprint without worry through a forested area. Also would like to see (maybe in the next game) enviormental hazards in forested areas, fallen tree trunks and rocks you can trip on and hurt yourself, maybe a random rabbit den you can step in, sink holes, etc. Something to keep you aware and still tense while running through the forests.

I also think it would be great to see a way to harvest water, like if I make a base camp by a tent, I can set up a water collector and use it to fill bottles if it's rained recently.

I've had the same idea and it would be awesome and add more realism. It would also be cool if some of the plant was poisenous so you need to know what plants you can eat or not eat. +1

I also think that we should be able to go a lot longer without food in general. At the moment, we start to starve to death in a very short period of time, like a couple of hours after eating something...

I totally get why we need to drink a lot, because we are doing a lot of travelling...But personally, I can spend all day up a mountain hiking, and not eat a thing till I get home in the evening. At most I would have some kind of chocolate bar to keep my energy up...

I don't think the benefits of eating last anywhere near long enough.

On my first play I saw pumkins in the distance and spent half an hour sneaking around zombies to get to them to find out they were only for looks...

Yea, but the world map with all spawns indicated is also up on Google; so it'll be a players choice to either immerse themselves or use the resources online to take the easy path.

The more realistic the survival element in the game, the better as far as I am concerned. It's at that kind of point that the game crosses a line and becomes an educational tool, with practical real world benefits in some respect.

At the moment, I wonder how many people have learnt to properly map read or even read a compass from playing DayZ.

I agree. Add foraging to the game, but also add the small possibility for hostile animals (aggressive boars, bears, wolves). This would make going from town to town through the woods both more interesting, and more dangerous.

I approve of this post.

Berries in certain bushes, as well as apples and some other natural found food is a good idea. A lot of people posting sound like it should be very common to find, but I think it should be the opposite. Natural food should be difficult to find and takes a while to spawn back after someone has taken it. It would also only regenerate some hunger, not all of it. It would be kind of like a nice thing to stumble upon, and sometimes a life saver, but not something to completely rely on.

I bet they could make it so there are random spawn points within the limit of forests. They already have areas chosen as "forest areas", so it probably isn't that hard...

Then people couldn't google spawn locations because they would be random in every server.

If people want to google spawn locations for stuff, that's their thing. For myself, I'd rather have the pleasure of exploring the game world and seeing what it has to offer.

I can pretty much guarantee that I will be playing and enjoying the game longer than those people, who will get bored and move on to the next band wagon they can jump on to.

It's a bit like watching a TV series that revolves around suspense and mystery, but going online and reading every single spoiler that you can...It doesn't give you an advantage, it just takes the majority of the fun out of the experience.

Could be cool. I imagine some poor new guy, red blinking food meter, o a berry bush! Then having to run to the bathroom.*

Bathroom*- I think survivors should have to poo and pee. Imagine walking around a building and seeing some dude just sitting there bent over. Whole new meaning to upper hand in a fight.

I like it!

And well we're on the subject, I should be able to drink a cow's blood to stave off thirst.

Or even better, I should be able to milk (after checking the sex of course) a cow/sheep/goat. Should be challenging, and you would need a bucket, but still, would be interesting.
