A few suggeestions concerning the item drop rarity

Recommended Posts

Hi there, I have been playing Day Z for about a week now and have noticed the item placements could use a rework.

Firstly - Food & Drinks

It is so easy to get food & water because nearly every zombie can drop some. This almost completely nullifies the role of looking for food & water to survive, not to mention that it's not realistic.

My solution to this is an easy one - remove food & drinks from zombies. That way the whole thing would feel just right.

I remember the first time I played(survived for 8 hours. Was quite pleased considering it was my first playtrough :P) I however did not know how to use a hatchet, so most of the time I had no weapons, therefore didn't have much chance to loot zombies. I've found some water, but my food meter was so low that I have decided my main goal for the moment would be finding food. I loved it. It gave me a sense of survival and and objective, while now I am always loaded with food. Always.

I think it's pretty self explainatory. Just remove the food & drinks from zombies, oh, and bring back the edible pumpkins, at least to some extent. Would be much better than what we have now.

Secondly - Morphine and Broken Legs

On several occasions, I had few zombies(not at the same time, it was a single zombie at least twice) just charge at me(without the splintered bone icon afaik) and break my legs in the middle of nowhere. WHY? It is just frustrating and feels unnatural. How does a few arm swings break a bone anyway?

I could understand it if a group of zombies starts mauling at you, and you're on the floor, half eaten, barely surviving the beating.

Solution: Make it harder to happen. Chance needs to be less of a factor here. Keep it possible with a splintered bone, but IMO decrease the chance. Make it happen only if you're getting absolutely massacred by zombies, and of course if you fall from high enough places.

Thirdly - flares and misc. (might edit later on)

Too many flares and chemlights in households. I think the number should be greatly reduced, and mainly reduced only to more urban or industrial areas.

I know I've left some stuff out, I'll make sure to edit when I remember them. Please tell me what you think, I think the food problem needs to be fixed urgently. :)

Bump. Could I hear your thoughts?

I also think the random zombie charge crippling is game breaking and retarded, and has to be removed ASAP

I've just had a zombie charge at me when I had 11.500+ blood, and a single hit of his broke my legs. Luckily I had a car nearby, butt fuck my luck, I've got disconnected, and could not find the server with the car again.

as you see: no one cares about food/chemlights and the issue with the broken legs was fixed or should be fixed since the last update

Er, no, it obviously wasn't, because it happened to me right now.

No one cares about food issue? Really?

How can you speak on behalf of the whole community?

I see that this thread, as many others - is unanswered. That is all.

The food issue is in my opinion one of the biggest flaws in the mechanics of day z as of now, and it can be fixed easily.

thanks to Authentic92.

And if you find food too common: play on a veteran or expert server. There you will get thirsty and hungry much faster. Its your choice.

If you remove food & drinks from zombies than ammo becomes the main drop from them... then we need to remove ammo from the zombies, and then they just drop empty cans and bottles which are already plentyfull and killing a zombie is worthless...

Instead of removing things from zombies, the dev team needs to ADD things dropping from zombies. I suggested things like, items from their 'past' live (like picture of wife & kids, shopping lists, notes, birthday or holiday cards). Another 'interesting' drop could be, knibbled on feet, a half eaten hand, a fore-arm (all these can be used as 'bait' in traps). And rags used for makeshift bandages, or to tie things together. And ofcourse nothing to drop.

So with all these things added, the presure on the drops is greatly increased, this means that food & drinks may well become medium rare drops, which does exactly what you suggest, but instead the game is enriched with all sorts of new items, instead of thinned down by removing something from a spawnlist...

In regards to broken legs, it should be less commen now, but it'll still happen! What this needs is other ways to deal with it, and ways that may indeed take some time and gathering while crawling, but are still within the realm of possibility. For example: going into the woods and chop some wood (or find wood), find some rags. Use the wood and rags to make a splint (i think the word is) which restores the ability to 'stumble', and you can run for short periodes but this induces pain! Add the ability to use a hatched and cut off a branch, this branch can be used as a melee weapon, but also as a crutch use one crutch in your main slot and be able to walk, use 2 crutches also in your secondary slot, and be able to run. Broken bones should heal on themselves also, taking 72h or so (including offline time) or can be insta healed with morphine.

So now one is able to atleast work around having a broken bone, continue playing (be it limited), move towards a hospital at a somewhat bearable speed, in a team using two crutches you could even move fast. And pain can be used to tease the player about his condition, when walking running, etc... And lets face it, that is the 'authentic' situation' instead of the current binairy system of having or not having morphine....

The flashlights and flares are just fine from my point of view, what needs to happen though is remove the flashlight from the spawn inventory, now all of a sudden these chemlights and flares become 'the' way to see at night, atleast untill you find a flashlight. Adding a flashlight to the loottables also puts more presure on these tables, and causes other items to spawn a bit less !

Only infected soldiers drop ammo. That makes sense and should stay.

I never said zombies shouldn't drop stuff, it is just that food & drinks are not one of them. Think about it. Almost every fourth or fifth zombie I kill drops sardines or soda cans. How ridiculous is that? It is absolutely game breaking and is something I'd like to see fixed by far the most, out of all the suggestions I had so far.

As for your idea of zombies dropping family photos, wallets, clothes usable to make bandages - I really, REALLY like the idea, and I'm definitely hoping to see something like that in future versions, along with more immersion related stuff such as more corpses, writings/warnings on buildings, people hanged next to their houses, people dead in bed, cheap attempts at barricading a building etc. etc.

I definitely want to see that, but it's not the even remotely a priority right now.

Back to the food problem - The game would not be any less rich with content. The food would still be there, lol, naturally you'd have to enter households or supermarkets to get it - the way it is intended.

Killing a zombie should be worthless. Killing them is not the point of the game. You should avoid them as much as possible. Your weapons are your protection from them.

Regarding the broken bones - Yup, it was greatly reduced, the way it should be. However a single zombie can randomly charge at you and break your bone, even if you are at full hp. I think that has something to do with collision impact(same thing that happens if you turn around a lot in small spaces)

As for the flashlight - agreed. A player should not start with one.

@The L!ne

I sometimes play on veteran servers - same thing there, The drop rate difference when it comes to food & drinks really isn't notably different.

why did you bump a thread, that is dead? stop it please

NO BUMPING!

With 10,000 forum members and growing this is a practice that could quickly lead to useless bump fests and new ideas would be swept away without even being read.

If a thread is very important to you feel free to include a link to it in your signature.

TIPS for keeping constructive discussion on your threads:

1) Make sure (use the SEARCH function) an idea hasn't already been completely ground into dust before. New, innovative ideas will stay on the front page much longer than yet another thread on bandit skins, firewood or Takistan.

From the "READ BEFORE POSTING!" thread that you clearly didn't read! Make an effort.

If you need to bump your own thread, then it wasn't interesting the first time around. Chances are it won't be interesting the second or third time, either.

Less Rifles and Machine guns, and more Handguns... The player killing with the rifles is ridiculous. At lease with handguns you have a chance to see your killer.
