night_chrono 11 Posted May 17, 2012 Title pretty much sums it up. Make so that if it start raining, any empty water bottles in your inventory get filled. If I had an empty bottle and it started raining, I would just pop the lid and catch as I ran.Or make it a context menu item so you have to sit still for a minute or something. As long as rain is a viable source of water.

ytman18@gmail.com 9 Posted May 17, 2012 No please. Perhaps we can have a 'rain catcher' item that will fill up when it rains... but there should be no magical rain filling your canteen.
tiri 21 Posted May 17, 2012 With a normal rain, it is near impossible to fill a water bottle in a short time without something like a funnel. The surface offered by the bottleneck is too small to catch enough rain.

dizzymagoo 19 Posted May 17, 2012 I think a rain catcher would be cool. You can set them up in the forest and shit and if it rains it fills with water, you can then fill your water bottle from it like a well. Great for us bandits who work alone.
terrvik 2409 Posted May 17, 2012 Implemented in the right way I like the idea. If you risk getting sick i n the rain there should be some reasons you would wanna take that risk, like collecting water. If Soda cans would become more rare so you really had to search for water it could work. Rinner23 5 Posted May 17, 2012 I do think it is a neat idea, but have you ever tried to fill a water bottle in the rain yourself? =)The rain catcher setup makes sense, but that does seem like another overly complicated game mechanic to add at this time, given the other ideas that might take precedence.Good idea though. fapoo 2 Posted May 17, 2012 Agreed rain catcher is more ideal for this mod. I do like the realism that goes with all of this.
Kophka 109 Posted May 17, 2012 +1 to a neat idea. Also, I can see using your hands to funnel water into a bottle, they really are neat little tools ;).
dreadstorm 3 Posted May 17, 2012 With a rain catching apparatus this could work- but the OP is a retarded suggestion. You can't walk around catching rain even with the bottle out, why should it fill up automatically when it's in your backpack, whilst your shooting stuff. Way to wreck a good game
Lady Kyrah 1110 Posted May 17, 2012 Not sure about needing a raincatcher, but maybe some .. cooldown so you can only fill one canteen at a time with maybe a 10 minutes delay to symbolise filling the canteen up?Not that i don't like the raincatcher but under a heavy rain, filling a plastic cup doesn't take ages and i get the feeling that a raincatcher device would be ok for a BIG water foxed water storage, but it feels like it's too much complexity for something i can do with a canteen and my hand. Land Squid 22 Posted May 17, 2012 Make a gear item called a Poncho (like the other gear items, knife, gps, etc.). Multiple uses: Use it to help keep yourself from getting cold/sick in the rain and also can be used as a collection device to refill canteens. Also gives an idea for a future player-placeable item for encampments: Large tarp setup as a water catcher funneling into a barrel. Gives you a point similar to the water wells where you can fill a canteen.
night_chrono 11 Posted May 17, 2012 funnel.A funnel to go in the equipment slots like knife/matches etc. would be perfect.rain catcherAnother fantastic idea. It would have to be able to be broken down and taken with you though. I wouldn't want to go through the trouble of setting one up only for some server issues making me lose it.Or put the occasional rain barrel as static objects. With a rain catching apparatus this could work- but the OP is a retarded suggestion. You can't walk around catching rain even with the bottle out' date=' why should it fill up automatically when it's in your backpack, whilst your shooting stuff. Way to wreck a good game[/quote']Because you can't take it out and hold it. I was talking about ways of doing it WITHIN the confines of ArmA II.
That Lamer 0 Posted May 17, 2012 When it rains you should be able to fill a bottle from any building, as the water will either stream in ribbons off the roof or collect into rain gutters and emerge from a single source. After a while of rain washing away the dust/dirt/whatever on the roof and in the gutters, it should be safe to drink from.
dsi24 227 Posted May 17, 2012 A bit of an overarching idea that would allow for more free-form construction of wilderness survival stuff:Instead of finding pre-made objects (or only pre-made objects) like tents, wire, etc, find plastic sheets (I imagine a construction site would be great for this) that you can then construct into whatever. For example, if you have a plastic sheet and an empty bottle, you can make a raincatcher. (that you then set down, in the rain or to wait for rain, and come back to later for a filled bottle)
boneboys 7988 Posted May 17, 2012 I was on a server the other night and it was raining CatZ & DogZ.What we need is buckets, big buckets...
rottingcore 1 Posted May 17, 2012 Are people really worried about their water consumption? I always have a soda on me. Even when i don't there is always a pond or something like a pump around for me to fill the water bottle with.

Land Squid 22 Posted May 17, 2012 Are people really worried about their water consumption? I always have a soda on me. Even when i don't there is always a pond or something like a pump around for me to fill the water bottle with. Some of us range pretty far off the beaten trail to avoid other players until we are ready or wish to make a foray into a populated area. An 8 kilometer hike through the extreme north or west portions of the map is a regular occurance and when you're that far out food supplies can become an issue.Presently I can hunt for food if I'm looking to stay out of towns or off the coast for a length of time (such as meeting up at an encampment with friends), but there is no method to acquire water that doesn't involve heading into populated/dangerous areas fairly regularly (especially since you need water more often than you need food in the game). Being able to fabricate a rain catcher out of a poncho+canteen (for individual use) or barrel+tarp (for group use at a camp) would go a good ways to allowing players to establish a self-sustaining presence somewhere out in the wilderness from which to operate. bobda 11 Posted May 18, 2012 Looking FAR into the future I think it'd be cool to have say, 55 gallon drums that could be filled with water and kept at camps as refill stations. This is of course low priority, and the ability to construct camps should be 100% done before something like this would get added.
Trooper (DayZ) 3 Posted May 18, 2012 +1 for the poncho system. If rocket is looking into rain making players catch a cold or something along those lines - there probably should be an item to reduce the risk, but obviously would be as good as being inside a building/tent. The ability to use if to fill up canteens using the could be a side bonus. Should still be an action though, not automatic.
