Alex (DayZ) 8 Posted May 16, 2012 "finding things which depends on the skill of the dog (which increases over time through training)"I'm against any kind of AI benefitting the player in DayZ, tracking, searching, navigation (and I guess eventually combat) should all be player dependant and controlled. I don't want to see AI doing this stuff for us, dogs could be introduced as additional NON-friendly NPC's but apart from that I don't want to see any AI/player co-operation.You co-operate with other players, not computer controlled entities. Don't bother working on their mechanics if a single guy raised the idea; he probably doesn't speak for the majority. Dogs get better over time and with training? Whats next then do I have to train my gutting skill to get better meat amounts from animals? DayZCraft :/
Legacy (DayZ) 1091 Posted May 16, 2012 It's probably just a thing that "Helps you as you go" Probably alerts you if zeds are around or something, I wouldn't start a petition without knowing fully of whats going to come with said dogs. As rocket stated "This is subject to change" so expect anything, but don't start a petition without seeing it in action for yourself.
Alex (DayZ) 8 Posted May 16, 2012 Thats the thing, I don't want to see it in action; at all. The very idea of it sounds awful.
Intigo 4 Posted May 16, 2012 You don't like dags? :'(
Legacy (DayZ) 1091 Posted May 16, 2012 I'm not going to judge the feature before it comes out, however you're free to do so either or. I just don't like that you want them gone before we even know what they do entirely as a 'final say'
oilman 72 Posted May 16, 2012 I have renamed this thread. There hasn't even been a discussion on the forums about dogs, starting a petition to stop them is absurd. So, discuss!

oilman 72 Posted May 16, 2012 That was a suggestion. This is on the actual feature, now that Rocket has confirmed he is working on it.The title will stay as is, Alex.
Alex (DayZ) 8 Posted May 16, 2012 Ah, this kind of forum moderation. I see.
Legacy (DayZ) 1091 Posted May 16, 2012 I'd leave it as is, I see this as a potential future argument and issues. Either way the dogs are as they are, we have no real idea what the dogs may end up in the future since they may change. For all I know they may only bandits if fired upon or something. oilman 72 Posted May 16, 2012 Hey, I could've given you a warning, or, hell, banned you, but do I look like a Bioware employee?I just feel that it's extremely antagonistic to have the first thread on a new feature being a petition to remove it. What if someone wants to talk about how they will use their dog, without having to defend its inclusion into the game?A discussion thread is more valuable than a petition to remove a feature not yet even in the game.

I'm glad you're probably in the minority.Dogs sound awesome, I'm just worried about god damned bandits shooting my poor pooch ;.;
Alex (DayZ) 8 Posted May 16, 2012 I think Dogs will take out the whole nature of ArmA combat; a heightened sense of smell, hearing. What will it mean for ambushes? Fights in ArmA are usually dictated by the first shot thats fired, if the shots proper it kills one man and its one less man you have to deal with in combat. Are Dogs just designed for survivors because they keep whining about bandits and being disadvantaged? To be honest, sounds like a casuals suggested the idea and really casuals dominate games these days so this idea will probably go through. Yay casuals.

SRTie4k 1 Posted May 16, 2012 It's an interesting idea, but it kind of decreases the tension and atmosphere of isolation and self-reliance. I thought that was one of the driving ideals behind this mod?Granted I'm sure there will be the option NOT to have a dog for the loners out there. I'm just concerned that survivability without a dog might become compromised.

Just an enhancement to people who want to play in a certain way.

Alex (DayZ) 8 Posted May 16, 2012 I don't discuss, I have an opinion. My opinion is extreme and I stress that I dont' like the idea of ANY AI to assist the player. It's a harsh world and it only remains that way if you don't get anything to help you besides tools such as compasses and maps to interpret your way forward. The unique thing about these items is they are down to player interpretation, you have to know where you are on the map, you need to determine which direction your heading and how far you have to head, and you should be totally aware of your surroundings, an AI shouldn't help you do that. Macenzie 79 Posted May 16, 2012 You've made your point Alex. Now if you arn't willing to discuss the issue I suggest you leave the discussion. Constantly stating the same opinion over and over is less than productive.

boneboys 7988 Posted May 16, 2012 Dogs can add a very interesting element.I once made a mission using *Blitzy* a bit of scripting magic made by Big Daddy, a long, long time ago.So, I had a dog protecting me, that was cool. There were enemy patrols roaming with dogs, that was scary.I'll check the thread just to see what all the noise is about.Thanks. rocket 16567 Posted May 16, 2012 Remember guys, this is supposed to be an experiment. Lets try some shit out! Will dogs be awesome? I don't know! Maybe they will be terrible. But I think there is some interesting elements in their that are worth exploring. They will be far from required, and I think many people will find them difficult to use (think: the crossbow). They will suit particular play styles. And I get to drink their delicious tears when their dog gets shot.
