drgullen 596 Posted September 10, 2020 I'm seeing a lot of complaints about the 1.09 loot economy and I have to concur. I played yesterday (and I've been playing this game since 2015 so I know what I'm doing) and my first 3 lives of the day ended with me starving to death, each time I might add having cans of food on me without finding a single knife or melee weapon, so I had no means to open them. On my 4th life, I finally found a steak knife and I was golden from then on. If retaining items in the world for 2 days is the new normal (which I think is a mistake personally), I'd like to suggest that you add a mechanic whereby you can smash open a can of food against a rock. You could use the already implemented mechanic of smashing a pick axe or sledgehammer against said rock to chip off some stones. You could also have it that opening the can this way guarantees that you will lose a random amount of the contents, maybe between 25% and 75%, as would happen if you did this IRL. I do enjoy the challenge of PvE survival, but it seems a bit ridiculous to me to be dying of starvation with cans of food in my inventory. 1
Parazight 1599 Posted September 10, 2020 I've been using a hammer to open cans because I couldn't find any knives in elektro. So yea. Would agree with this. Perhaps infected should drop stone knives more often.
Robzom11 109 Posted September 11, 2020 (edited) I didn't have an issue finding knives neither did the random i played with (found one on dead player than another in a building spawn), and we found like 3 chicken spawns and a goat within a 300m radius(abit ridiculous but im hoping it was just lucky). Maybe you got really unlucky, lol maybe i got really lucky. I think you need to take a fresh look at the 2 day timer, it really makes the world feel lived in and makes you feel like you're actually scavenging through dropped items, idk i love it. I agree with the cans though, that definitely would be awkward dying like that. I think you should be able to open them by hitting anything though, making them abit less viable/common of a melee weapon aswell, unless you like opening cans with a skull. Well this is the beauty of DayZ, right? We all have different play styles and we all have things we like and don't like. I personally don't like it. Retaining items for this long is having too negative an impact on the loot economy, IMO. In my experience so far, if you don't immediately head inland from your spawn point on the coast, your chances of survival are very low because no knives or melee weapons are spawning in coastal towns or if they are, they've been looted and are probably being stored somewhere by players which prevents more from spawning on the coast for 2 days. I think the change was a bit too drastic. Two loot cleanups a day (i.e. retain it for 12 hours, not 48 hours) seems better to me.

I've heard dropped loot despawns after 1 hour from players. that being said I was founding loads of dropped clothing that stayed around for hours. whats happening? My understanding is loot that was on your corpse will despawn after 1 hour, but dropped loot, for example a backpack stashed in a bush somewhere, will last for 48 hours now. I have proven this myself as a test -- I stashed a Mosin in a bush near Devil's Castle and sure enough, about 42 hours later, it was still there. This is another issue I have with retaining the loot for this long -- it takes away from valuing your life if you can just stash all your shit and pick it back up next life.
Robzom11 109 Posted September 12, 2020 (edited) @drgullen Hmm your points against the 2 day timer do stack up, not sure what to think now, though i will say i have not had trouble finding knives but regardless the solution to this is you should be able to break a can open. I do still like how the loot economy feels when it comes to finding guns. The other day me and a random went to staroye with no weapon other than an amphibia that we got by trading food, usually by then you have a shotgun and a mosin so that was a breath of fresh air. Though the same thing could be achieved in other ways instead of a 2 day timer. I always hated how easy it was to find a decent gun quickly, especially when that gun is likely all you need for pvp and is the gun you will have for awhile and likely just died with in your last life. This is probably my favorite side effect of the 2 day timer and hope that atleast gun scarcity stays one way or another as it is if the timer is reduced. Aruze 18 Posted September 15, 2020 how about allowing you to open cans by scraping them on the road or concrete , if u scrape a can long enough the metal will wear out and the can will open. But if u dont have Gloves u can cut yourself. Video:
