Tips for finding a friend when we've both spawned far away?

Recommended Posts

Okay... So my friend and I recently bought this game. I've gotten to know the terrain a bit and know a good deal about the mod. But it seems IMPOSSIBLE for us to find each other so we can group up. I can't really help her much even if I have a compass and a map to look at. So does anyone have any helpful tips to make it easier for us to meet up? Thanks in advance!

We have tried the road signs thing but it seems that she always gets spawned so deep into the wilderness that she never ends up on a main road.

Hi Subo,

Go here http://dayzmod.info/ and look at the maps, this is so you and your friend both have one you can use.

Use the sun, you can find your way to the coast based of the time in the game and where it is in the sky. Your friend should spawn on the coast, I am surprised she is spawning in the wilderness.

Once you both hit the coast, it will be very easy to find each other.

Always when I try to group up with my friends we move by the powerlines. Both the one from Elektro and Cherno Meets up in a large triangle north of Cherno. They are Easy to spot and the path is usually empty from bandits and other players

Hey buddy.

My tip would be to for either you or your friend (or both) to try to locate a town, landmark or a road that would help you trying to figure out your current location. Check out the chernarus map should you not currently have one in your inventory.

If you got the sea by your right side, you're either in the south or the east (since there is nothing apart from empty land in the north and far west.

Hope that helps a little :)

Forgot to mention, when you first log in, in the bottom right of the screen, it will tell you what region you are in.

With this and a compass, you can get your bearings and make a bee-line for your friend

EASIEST WAY:

When you both log in, it will let you know what area you have zoned in at. It will be in the bottom right hand corner of your screen and look something like:

Day 0

Chernarus

Cap Golova

Find a map you like on the internet. I prefer something easy like:

http://ttp2.dslyecxi.com/images/chernarus_big_hq.jpg

Day Z will start you on the coast. Based on your starting zones, stay on the waterfront and each of you head in the appropriate direction to find each other. If your friend started to the East or North, keep the ocean on your right; West or South, keep it on your left.

DIFFICULT METHOD (BUT FASTER):

Based on your spawn point (zone), analyze the out-of-game map and choose an inland spot that is somewhat equadistant. Judge the path by using the shore or a road to angle yourself. Move along that angle and use major landmarks (cities, roads or powerlines) to update you on your progress.

All of the above is useful, add a little TS or Skype to communicate and you are good to go.

Travelling along the coast is good for getting your bearings but most of the time you'll see plenty of dead survivours near the coast as bandits know people use the coast to get their bearings.

I guess my advice is be careful when using coast/roads to navigate.

THanks to everyone for the helpful tips. We still haven't found eachother, but we're working on it. I've gotten to know Chernarus pretty well from trying to find her, lol. The problem is that she doesn't know it very well. Also, I think the reason she is spawning in the wilderness is because that's where she logged off. She hasn't died recently and apparently she must have wandered off into the woods trying to find me, so she spawns there now. I will keep trying. Thanks again everyone. Btw, the map really helped and the tip about looking at the right side of the screen when you spawn.

One more thing: Yes, the coast and roads seem very dangerous. 6 times now I've been killed by bandits who seem to know where I am at all times, even if I'm sneaky. Damn bandits.

Bandits are tricky bastards, best case scenario: Infinite respawn until same city :V If you feel like wasting time...

Another good indicator to determine which side of the map you are on is by looking at how the railroads/highway are aligned to the ocean.

If you are at the waterfront and move inland and reach the railroads first, you are on the southwest coast.

If you encounter a road first, that means you are A) on the west coast, or B) in between Cherno and Elektro.

meeting up with your friend should be relatively easy and painless, the spawning system at the moment is way too random and painful.... You should be able to select in which general area you spawn AT LEAST when you are respawning! Make it a large area i dont care, but running for 2 hours to find my friend is NOT fun in any way.

Thats the spirit of the game at this moment, If you or your friend know your bearings studied the map a little bit and looked at the sun rising and setting directions, with nothing but skype (TS, Ventrilo, etc) and some land marks you could easily make your way over to each other using the coast.

I've never played Arma 2 before this it took me 10 minutes to find each of my friends (two of them) just by their description. Did this three times, since immediately after finding one he got so excited he slipped off the building he was on and died.

Subo,

If either of you have the "map" item in your game inventory you can use this very handy tip to help with your "link-up."

Open the map by pressing the "M" button and then move your cursor to the place that you plan to travel to or meet up at, press and hold the "left shift" button and "left click" on that place. Close the map and look in the direction that you intend to travel and in game you will now see a personal waypoint with a small arrow and your distance from that position on the horizon. This will assist you in getting to where you want to be and also allow you to sort out an alternative route but still continue to move in the correct direction if natural, zombie, or bandit type obstacles appear in your path. To delete the personal waypoint you simply have to hold your cursor over that waypoint marker on the map and press your "delete" key. You will only be able to have one of these personal waypoints on the map at one time but you can create, delete, and recreate them as often as you please.

This is not a feature native to the Day Z mod but the default ArmA 2 engine itself. Hopefully that will help you get linked up and working together very soon.

The thing is...if you spawn north and he spawns at the airstrip, it takes a good 1h to get to him running (and hoping to not die)...
