honelith 0 Posted May 15, 2012 Some servers have no moon, hence why it's darker. How often do you see a game in almost complete darkness? Not many, but DayZ wants to provide an experience, not a walk in the park. ;)

I have no idea how it would work though.EDIT: Also forgot to add that if you didn't know you can also use the stars for navigation since they too are simulated.http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=8253
Evilsausage 87 Posted May 16, 2012 I agree its too dark. I mean no matter how dark its outside you normally can atleast see where a little bit since your eyes adapt. Here its so black i can't even where i put my feet.Making it slightly less dark would be nice, that way we aren't forced to raise gama and brightness to max. Time Glitch 453 Posted May 16, 2012 If you're out on your own (Not in a town or popular survivor area!), throwing a flare as far as you can, then dashing quickly away from the point you threw it from is a fairly safe way to get some light. The reason you move is so if anyone's watching, they won't find you easy by estimating the trajectory. I don't know what the community verdict is on Chemlights, as they DO light you up like a christmas tree, but I've used them for navigating in the wilderness and tiny villages. I walk upright, and make a decent pace while staying cautious.

Flares are too bright and reveal you if you try to use one in a building whereas someone might not notice the chemlight unless they get very close. Try to avoid using lights for general navigation purposes as nothing is easier to spot than a bright light in the pitch black. Use silhouettes of landmarks with reference to the contour map to help you navigate at night.

Use silhouettes of landmarks with reference to the contour map to help you navigate at night.Let's go ahead and assume you only have very basic supplies, such as flares and chemlights, no maps or binoculars or fancy stuff. Navigating in the total dark without turning up brightness and gamma is almost impossible. You have to have some kind of light!Chemlights don't have a huge radius, so you might not get spotted depending on the situation. Much better than carrying a flare around though. statistx 5 Posted May 16, 2012 I love playing in the night....as long as i have flares.I never found anything other than flares and a chemlight once and even with FULL gamma and brightness it is impossible for me to navigate when my flares run out, either cause of my graphic settings/card or my monitor, no idea, so i just have fun with them til I'm down to zero, then it's logout time til i can play in the daylight again... :/

bondono 1 Posted May 16, 2012 There's a reason not many games have total darkness. It's kind of neat at first, then the novelty wears thin once you realize you're just stumbling around blindly, unable to really enjoy the game. Moonlight is needed. Just enough to let you get by, but not enough that you wouldn't pop a flare or use a flashlight. When I log on to a dark server it doesn't mean I'm going to have some nighttime experience. It means I'm going to go do something else until there's light.
Legacy (DayZ) 1091 Posted May 16, 2012 I just turn my gamma up enough to see roads and grass, but not enough to where it's as if the sun is out.
statistx 5 Posted May 16, 2012 I just turn my gamma up enough to see roads and grass' date=' but not enough to where it's as if the sun is out.[/quote']and thats the problem i have..as written before somewhere, i don't know if it's my settings, my graphic card or my screen, but the ONLY thing i see is water and sky when i yank up my settings during the night.road and grass is only visible if i have sky or water in front of it, otherwise i just have blackness
Garful 21 Posted May 16, 2012 You can't hold a flare because its a beacon for bandits and zombies alike, yet you can't travel at 1.0 gamma and brightness without holding a flare. Then again, if they make it so you can barely see at Gamma and Brightness 1.0, then people will just start pumping Gamma and Brightness up to the max to have the biggest advantage.I kinda like how Rocket has it now. Set it so low that people have to turn things to max to even move. You're then somewhat assured that the playing field has been leveled.
