Daddy, what did you do before the zombies came? Professions

Recommended Posts

I was thinking how cool it would be to add a number of professions to dayz. Each with their own pros and cons.

I've been trying to thing of different professions and what their good and bad points would be, perhaps a mechanic could fix cars up more easily but not be as good a shot.

An athlete could run faster and further without needing to rest but they need more food.

Sniper, better shot with rifles, bad with pistols.

Ranger, starts with a map and compass

Maybe someone else has thought of this but it would be interesting to hear your ideas.

This has been suggested before. It's been about... Five days, I would guess.

lol i remember joining this forum and posting practically the same thread, with the same response XD

there is literally no original idea, just mountains of lost ones XD

tbh yea i thought it would be a good idea, I thought it would give more reason for peeps to co-operate, as well if there was a function so that other players could learn skills from other players whilst their using those skills in proximity then it would certainly be an insentive to stay together.

Of course there are lone wolves out there who expect to be spawned from a love making session between Bear Grills and Ray Mears.

also, i was thinking along the lines of,

doctor - can perform more complicated med procedures

engineer - can perform more complicated repair procedures

etc

and learning those other skills by in being close proximity to another person using them

Not a bad idea but open to exploitation.

*Figure out what fall "breaks a leg"*

*Morphine near guy learning*

*Again*

OR

*Collect a shit tonne of bandages*

*Shoot/Hit friend*

*Bandage wound near guy learning*

*Again*

This is obviously just an exploit for medical, but I assume you can see how those fixing cars could exploit it, or those "orienteering" for rangers or snipers getting "crack shots", etc.

I'm not even going to look, but I assume 1 or 2 days, 3 at the most.

But to the OP, this isn't going to happen.

Yea I guess, it may be discouraged however, if it was on specific advanced procedures, so for example a doctor could still fill up a car, maybe even repair windscreen, but the engine parts (much rarer items) would require an engineer.

However i cant think of any analogy similiar to med, i mean a engineer could apply a bandage but he may not be able to know how to administer a blood transfusion, however this is still open to the exploit ye mentioned due to their frequency and how quickly you can use them after losing blood. Maybe if there were more advanced options opened up in administering meds then a similiar analogy could be drawn. Ive seen threads on it but a defibrillator might be an interesting example.

If this was applied with very specific procedures, requiring unique possibly rare items, with possibly requiring multiple viewing before skill is learnt. I think it that exploit might be discouraged. But yea, i would assume peeps with their own servers and stock piles of resources probably would use that exploit :(

Im not sure I like the idea of learning new skills as it is just too easy to exploit and when you know them then there is no point to team up.

You could however advance your skills by making things quicker and more effective. For example, anyone can change a tyre on a car but putting an engine in is harder. When you play as an enginner or Mechanic then you can fix the engine, each time you do so it becomes more sterdya nd lasts longer.

With a doctor you can bandage quicker, there is less chance of infection.

..and to the guy who says it will never happen, this game is pretty much nothing right now, its an alpha with a very basic idea. They are doing a fantastic job with the basic idea but we all know that it needs to build and progress into a full game.

With the popularity that its already obtained it will not be long before either the guys at ARMA start designing Dayz from scratch or another company starts to impliment a lot of these suggestions into a new engine.

It would be foolish not to as it could be an amazing game.

The more I hear of these ideas, the more they grow on me. I think.

The only thing I'd say is that there should not be any skil-sets that enhance shooting abilities - that'd either encourage certain types of people to shoot people more, and would make other skill-sets feel a bit useless in that regard - in a non-fun kinda way.

Doctor skill sets sounds good

Mechanic Skill sets sound good

Perhaps make an available skill set that is average at everything, too, so that the lone wolves can still access a large part of the available skills in the game.

Chef: Could use canned food or meat combined with fire (speaking in just its basic form as of now) to create more long lasting and filling meals that could restore small amounts of health or if they added an "energy" system could restore or increase the total for a short duration.

Packer: (master organizer) Make more room in peoples backpack by "reorganizing" it

Thief: can move more quietly (standing would be the equivalent of normal crouching) at the expense of a smaller build and weaker frame.

Thats more like it :) the packer and theif profession would be great, or maybe just have all females be great packers ;)

If they were to choose skill sets that enhance weapons then the drawbacks would have to be significant. I would imagine to leave them out would be a much easier option.

Perhaps in the story of Dayz its set in a country where everyone has done National Service which means they all know how to fire a weapon.

I feel like weapons are something that you should "improve per use" shouldn't be skill trees, or unlocking anything really special that doesn't really make sense, nothing to make it unrealistic. They should do "weapon leveling" like its done in "Red Orchestra 2" nothing fancy, nothing "special" just over time you get a little bit better. Thats the best way to keep it fair while still putting it in the game. The players who get it high enough kind of "deserve" (use that lightly) to have such improved skills.

Perhaps even take a D&D style to it. With just physical attributes (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution) that are randomly generated depending on the profession you choose and it give you a small handful like 5 points to add to anywhere you want. And as your progress through the game you get a little bit better at each attribute as you "use" them.

Doctor: Can heal nearby players with the proper items and as you progress with it, you can do more with less. And possibly not exactly the right kind of equipment.

Soldier: "Jack of all trades" is just OK at everything but "levels up" at a slower rate. But also starts out with slightly bit better weapons skills.

Engineer: Can repair weapons, and vehicles and eventually become "Master Jerry-Riggers" that can fix a busted motor with nothing more then bubble gum and ducktape.

Chef: Can fix food that is more filling, last more then 1 meal, and that can provide some benefits possibly.

Natural Leader: This would be a some what selfless role, your skills all start lower then the other classes, so the start of the game would be more difficult then it already would be. But you "inspire" the people around you. They find that they do a better job at the things they are doing and learn more from their own work while around you. (I see a few flaws with it as I am sure many of you do as well. "Inspire" the person trying to kill you? 2 Natural leaders boosting each other to almost cancel out the negative?)

I was thinking of an office blue collar worker, extreme low settings for hardcore players who jus wanna show off how long theyve lasted XD

Im not sure I like the idea of learning new skills as it is just too easy to exploit and when you know them then there is no point to team up.

Err i disagree tbh, i think its open to exploitation if items associated with advanced (can be taught/learnt) procedures are frequent, and if the player only has to be in the proximity once to learn a skill.

If items are rarer (as i would expect) for more advanced complicated procedures, then its hard to repetativelty do a task in order to have someone learn.

Engine Parts are rare for example, so you wouldnt want to risk repeatedly damaging it, in order to witness the much more complicated repair mulitple times.

ON TOP OF THAT, in order to learn a skill, the person you wanna learn it off has to be close, ie youll be aware of each other, so the teacher has to be participating, willingly or not.

Me and my clan mates talked about something similar.

Except we thought of it more based off humanity and chance on your next respond.

Have a few different classes or so.

Medic Class - Just spawns with a few extra bandages, morphine, painkillers, blood bag,and flashlight

Cop Class - Pistol with 2 clips, bandage, flashlight

Store Clerk - has a couple Drinks, couple cans of food, flashlight, and bandage.

Default/citizen - has the flashlight, painkiller, bandage.

If you have a higher humanity rating you are eligibale for the first three classes.

If you try to re-spawn or have re-spawned in the last hour or two than you are set to the default class so people don't just re-spawn until they get the class they want.

Make it so you only have 10% chance for each of the top three classes besides default.

Will give murdering at will a punishment for their choices as well as a benefit for those who choose to help others.

Both choices will not cause an unbalance and won't destroy or prevent any one playstyle.

Hmmmm, dunno if im completely set in the class types, but that system of randomising them sounds perfect if it was introduced XD
