No, the items will stay. There is a catch though. All items have a despawn timer, some short, some long and some very long (tents, etc.). After this timer ends the item will despawn. This does not concern items in inventory, items in stashes (the actual item like the tent itself does have a timer), spawned items unless moved away from spawn point.

And to answer your next question: tents, backpacks, etc. are persistent for at least 10 days. At least that's what Brian Hicks said

That's an interesting scenario. I would say yes but do not take my word for it. Best thing you can do is ask a developer.

I'd like to think that the clock would keep ticking on items- though might be slower if in your care or in a protected case. (I know you want something more concrete than my opinion) but it would make sense that things are always gradually de-spawning. If left alone on the ground things break down / degrade quicker than if in your person and you can always set the "clock" back a bit with a repair kit for a certain item.

A weapon in particular would generally get dirty or rusty and- if you didn't clean it- would eventually become ruined. How long would this take would depend on how often you fired it or how long it was left on the ground. I'm not sure if they take rain into the equation or not?

Anyway- it's a good question and everything above is just stitched together from different conversations I've seen on here. I apologize that the sources include both people who know what they're talking about and those who don't.
