Thoughts on Cannabis

Recommended Posts

I was thinking, the effects of cannabis should reflect as it is. As such, I feel the most important feature this could add would be a way to removed the stuffed status. Further use could lead to a sort "winded state", which might persist for a few minutes (to attempt to replicate couch lock). Another fun feature could be very subtle phantom music or talking. I don't feel as though it should make you hungry, as the use of cannabis, to my knowledge, doesn't rapidly lower your body's energy reserves. (I'm trying to say being hungry in real life and being hungry in game mean two very different things. In real life, hunger is a feeling. In game, hunger is almost like a fat reserve measurement)

Perhaps it could also reduce sway? (This is the reason it's banned in the olympics, along with alcohol and unnecessary beta blockers).

Also, perhaps further use could lead to seeing "shadow creatures" in the corners of your vision?

Not to mention, it could be a source to craft (undyed?) rope?

Alcohol and weed REDUCE sway? wha? Lol and shadow creatures?!?! I need to hook up with your guy apparently.  I guess all I hope is that the game someday gets to a finished enough state they can start to do small things like drug effects.

Reduce sway? Definitely not. Slight "shadow creatures" could be good but would have to be very small, more like you keep thinking you see something moving in the bushes out of the corner of your eye. Also make vision slightly blurry or grainy and change brightness/contrast slightly depending on how much you have used. In terms of hunger status it could just give you messages/status indicators indicating that your stomach is not as full as it actually is (i.e. you are at Stage 2 stuffed, bit recieve no messages). It should also reduce pain (i.e. reduce blurring and color-loss effects from taking damage) slightly.

Also every 15-30 seconds it could give you a message "Dude, I'm so high" :)

Alcohol and weed do reduce sway. Consider the effects of depressants on your nervous system. As I said, you'd get a similar effect from beta blockers, but also benzos, and just other tranquilizers in general. But they should all induce a sort of "winded" status. Another interesting effect could be written text letting the player know that someone was smoking in the area. It could be a dead give away and lead to it not be over used by snipers.

Another fun thought: it could be used to drive away the strigoi in case the dead, "hidden ones", or cthulhu try to reclaim the earth.

Cannabis actually dilates the blood vessels and causes your heart rate to rise as your blood pressure falls ..  high heart rate wouldn't be beneficial to sniping I would think.  The only kind of shooting that I could see it having an effect on is snap shooting not stationary, and how do you simulate that without adding some lame element such as aim assist?

**and about the winded status, as odd as it sounds cannabis is a bronchial dilator and opens your chest up quite a bit.  There is however a bounce back after the initial dilation effect wears off due to inflammation of the throat from smoking. (this is assuming it's smoked of course, vaporized or ingested is different)

Heart rate alone is no indication of a substance's ability to steady the nerves.

The idea was not to make the character actually winded, but to simulate the effects of couch lock, not allowing them to run... (but maybe allowing them to sprint?) to simulate the perceived heaviness of things.

Yes, but I do long range competitive shooting and a high heart rate will fuck you up even more than the slight unsteadiness you'd have if you didn't smoke it.

I can see some funny shit going down in elektro with the potheads lol

Not a game suggestion in any sense of the term.
