Some sometimes you need to tell them how to type (i.e. press / ). Frustrating, I know.

I believe I did during the 5 minutes of just yelling at him :P But yeah I have had to do that several times before, which is usually okay. But this guy just didn't even want to bother :/

He probably couldn't hear you or you couldn't hear him. Twice now I have had some kind of bug that prevents others from seeing typed text or hearing spoken word through the in-game communication systems.

That is possible, I actually did hear him for a -split- second but it was inaudible. 

Regardless I would of thought he would of tried at least doing some movements like hand gestures and what-not.
