ScorePoint 60 Posted March 11, 2015 (edited) I was just watching a video of the new zombie animation and thought of a question. The zombie attack animations didn't look like they want to grab you and eat you. They were pushing/hitting and punching instead. So, what do the zombies really want? Obviously, the first default answer would be they are hungry and want to eat. But, if that's the case why then they punch and push, instead of grabbing and pulling to bite? Or do they want to knock you down first and then bite? And do they act like animals, and that means they are not smart? What do you think? https://youtu.be/ZMc0UiF7Vss?t=10s Edited March 11, 2015 by ScorePoint

Guess thats why they punch, hit and so forth, rather than try to grapple on and bite. Doesn't explain why the player starts to bleed more or less instantly from being punched, though. randomspawn 215 Posted March 11, 2015 Well, since they know to run around a house to find an open door, they must be smart, right?
Insane Ruffles 74 Posted March 11, 2015 I remember in the mod, zombies would start to eat you after you got knocked unconscious or you died. The screams your character made after waking up and being eaten were terrible.

Even if they are infected humans I prefer calling them Zombies because the word infected sounds cheesy. Well, since they know to run around a house to find an open door, they must be smart, right? Any living animal or even insects can find a way in lol

Just calling them infected as that is what the devs call them, and is supposed to mitigate the fact that they can run, survive in cold etc, while zombies like in the TWD sense would simply rot and die after a while. What do you think? https://youtu.be/ZMc0UiF7Vss?t=10s They aren't "zombies" in the classical, "undead risen from their graves hungering for human flesh" sense. They aren't chasing you in order to eat you, at least, that isn't what they intend. Instead, they are just people infected (in some parts of the Internet, somewhere official, I remember reading the Day Z 'infection" as being a prion disease, which is to say, not a "disease" at all, merely misfolded proteins) with some disease that destroys higher brain functions, essentially. They lose all parts of "them that make them, them", essentially (memory, personality, skills, ability to communicate, etc), and leaves them with just animalistic instincts. They see something, they want to chase it down and kill it (note: living, perfectly-fine humans also have this instinct. It is something common to all predators) The eating (if there is any in the Standalone. I certainly have never seen any.) is just incidental to them chasing you down and beating you to death. "Bleeding" due to getting punched and slapped is just the engine's REALLY shitty way of saying "you are getting damaged". If I had my way, the medical system would be complex, and "bludgeoning/bruising" (read: punching, hammers, clubs, etc) damage is different from "slashing" damage (read: getting bitten, knives, spears, arrows, etc)

And the word Infected sounds cheesy to me. When they want to eat rabbits or chickens they do the same attack mechanics, instead of trying to catch it and grab it. My point is maybe we want grabbing and catching animations too, not just punching and hitting. Edited March 11, 2015 by ScorePoint
shadowranger333 24 Posted March 11, 2015 I think grabbing may be hard to code. But I don't see why not have them biting. Maybe have them do both blunt and bite attacks. The biting being slower and easier to dodge, but dealing more damage.
IkaikaKekai 1957 Posted March 11, 2015 They're both. They're crazy and attack anything that moves, and once they kill their target they start to eat, or at least thats the intent. They've done some mocap where the actor was playing a zombie 'eating' from a body. Granted zombies right now are placeholder at best and will be replaced (Soon from the sounds of it), they even talked about zombie 'life cycles', to my understanding it'd be that all zombies start out healthy and strong, and as time goes on they degrade or get injured and their injuries show, IE if you shoot a zombie in the leg to get away he'll turn into a crawler, as they age they'll turn into hoppers, ect and eventually die. I would hope that they become smart enough to seek out food and water rather than just amble around and attack like they do now.
ToySmokes 116 Posted March 11, 2015 Basically what this guy said. They are infected with some sort of rage virus that causes them to attack all living things around them. And since they're not dead, they need to eat. But it's not there priority. We all know though that "DayZ is your story" ect. But I think that this is what's somwhat official
