rather than using it as currency you should be able to use it as kindling and/or a makeshift torch 

 

it'd be a logical thing to do with money that was lying around after it had no value, since it's easily stackable in large amounts. 

 

in addition, you should be able to do the same with paper.

You can already start a fire with paper, rip pages off books and use those as well. Not sure if i'd carry a bunch of papers around just for the sole purpose of starting a fire. Rags are pretty easy to find, can be deposited in first aid kits and have multiple uses.

Along with the practical uses, it'd add to immersion, plus if any players form any sort of community (One of my dreams) they would have a currency to base it off of.
