Do backpacks work as containers right now

Recommended Posts

As in do they survive server restarts apart from wednesday maintanence of course. And if they do how long do they stay on the server? And what are the chances of server restards eating them up?

Are you talking about placing one on the ground for storage use or simply on your back?  Also are we talking persistent server or non persistent, results may vary.

A backpack placed on the ground obviously. Both persistent and nonpersistent servers.

Backpacks / ammoboxes / weapons / mags / protector cases / tents are persistent on persistence enabled servers.

Anything else is not, weapon attachments, clothing,, melee weapons, boots, consumables, tools. Also vehicles are persistent on persistence enabled servers.

^Anything written above can be put inside a backpack for it to carry over restarts, by but not being persistent I mean they won't stay on the ground. Inside a backpack, it's all good.

NOTE: If a server writes "PERSISTENCE ON" or "PERS ON" at its name, this doesn't mean that server is  100% persistent.  You must experiment this on your own aswell. Get a taloon backpack, put some stuff inside it. Drop it, come 3-4 hours later, if It's still there then that server is persistent. Keep in mind non-official persistence enabled servers can change their persistence status if the owner of that server decides to so do. It's a double end sword.

Although, most servers which write persistence on are persistent servers.

Here is a pretty good read/reference guide for you be it two months old should still be somewhat accurate.  Servers with persistence disable will despawn the loot upon a restart, persistence enabled should be good through a few restarts, I'm unsure of the decay period for a backpack as I do not play on persistence enabled servers.  Another thing to keep in mind is whilst on the persistent server if you set up camp etc, you will need to return to that server to retain the items you left on the ground.  If anyone has some recent testing input they might be able to offer more insight into the exact decay periods for a backpack etc.

There is currently no decay for any item I suppose. But if the decay changes (or gets reset) when you add a new item or something, then I might be wrong.

But I have seen backpacks standing on the floor up to 6 days (and then the wednesday wipe comes, eventually)

i needed some clarification on what persistance actually meant, past respawning loot. i'll give that a read i suppose.

that confirms what i thought, though i wasn't sure how long stuff stayed/decayed.

will the tents always be wiped on a Wednesday? seems to defeat the point of all that space.

It will get wiped for a few more weeks (7-8) and the central loot economy will be implemented, then all servers will be persistent, therefore no more wipes.

It better finally be because there is absolutely no point to look for a tent right now. Still thanks for the answers. Although I bet noone can be 100% sure with DayZ as far as persistence goes.

For the past three weeks I have been maintaining a supply depot of sorts on a persistent server, taking with me only the best that I can carry each tuesday night.  This last week we ended up with about a dozen bags and various guns, including a couple SKS and Blaze rifles left over from the first day of looting. Persistent servers can be almost completely looted out in a couple of days, with more loot spawning in by Sunday.  It was peculiar how much loot started spawning in the area of the stash location after a few days and a dozen full backpacks.  I should have taken a screenshot, but we ran across many building with 2-10 times as much loot as should spawn; including a hunter treestand with 6 backpacks and a couple dozen items total.  I'm testing a theory that packed military tents, or just piles of gear, might cause 'lootgasms' on persistent servers if left for a few days.

The only backpack persistence issues I encountered involved the reading of the bags' contents from left to right, top to bottom. Imagine a full mountain backpack that is 5 wide and 7 deep, with an MP5 in the bottom left corner of the bag; it sits three slots high and four slots wide.  If two 30 round magazines are placed in the space next to the gun, the first magazine sticks up one block above the MP5.  The game will see this magazine first and place it in the backpack first, obstructing the space needed for the gun to fit in the bag.  Even if there is a space left for the gun, it seems that larger items are discarded to make space.  I have also had first aid kits and hats/jackets lost in the same manner due to watter bottles sticking up above a row.  I haven't left many loose items on the ground, but a bag of lime lasted four days untouched.

I hope this is helpful for those that haven't had much experience on persistent servers.  It isn't completely ready, but it is still decently playable on a week-by-week basis.

Okay, so I just got done checking again, and the loot spwans have again become more plentiful in the area around the stockpile.vhNiZbR.jpgI guess all you need to farm loot is some seeds...
